    • Nova Beam Damage


      My question is simple: How does it work? I found, somewhere in the EVN Bible, or maybe on this board, that beam damage is applied every frame, regardless of reload. So a nice, old school particle beam (reload=2, count = 2), does damage twice, not once. Fine, says I. So I go and make a pulse-type beam weapon, with a reload of 30 or so and a count of 1. I want it to just flash-non continuous like. This beam is set to do 20 damage per shot. This is not working correctly. A ship armed with two of them is killing ships with 250 life in 1 hit, at least when the AI is using it. In ships with 50 life, you should be able to withstand 1 double blast before eating it. Not a chance. What gives? Do I need to just get over it and turn down the damage? Damn beams. I love 'em, but all to often, errrrrrrr.... No planetary beams my butt...

    • Take a look at the beam fadeout rate. Each tick the beam is around does damage - even if that tick is one where the beam is around due to fadeout. So a count 1 beam may well be doing several counts worth of damage.

    • 200 Damge is WAY too much. Scale that down by 100*. Beams like the Ion Cannon have 1Mass Dmg, 2 Enrgy Damage,Cont's of 1 and Reload of zilch.

    • I belive beam damage is every tenth of a second. So a beam that does say, 2 damage, does 20 damage per second. Dont quote me on this, though, I didnt research it (was drawing from the back of my mind)

      Before I asked, I did investigate some of the Nova defaults. I turned the damage down by a factor of 10, and now the weapons are better to scale, but now underpowered from where they should be. My concern in the matter is that every other weapon (projectiles and guided weapons) in the plug is set up in a very specific way, so that I know exactly how much damage is being done and how many hits different ships can absorb. It's important because in my plug, there are no shields, and no armor recharge, and really, the only way to survive for more than a few seconds is to be a very, very good pilot. It's so difficult, in fact, that I have set up "Difficulty level" outfits that give a bunch of extra armor to the player.

      Oh well, I guess that a bunch of testing is probably the best way anyway.
