    • Vell-os split off. Where's the split?

My idea is to make a tangent for the Vellos string, much like the Polaris string. The only trouble is, is that I cannot seem to find where that split occurs I know it happens just before ID#412. (I'm trying to dig around with resedit, without much success)
There is a point as you know where Krane is discusted with the Polaran spy network. She says, "...meet me in the bar." I thought this would be an invisible mission with a description to go to the new Auroran allies. (that being mission id#412)

This I had hoped would be my split. Instead of a seek and destroy mission, you would be sent on a fact finding mission.

I'm missing something, I know it. But I have no idea where. 🙂

I'm still learning here, so any help would be much appreciated.

    • Are you trying to have the "meet me..." set either one bit or another?
      If so:
Use the random thing: R(<op1> <op2> ). Have <op1> be the bit that would normally be set, and have the <op2> be the bit you want to use, leading the player onto the split.

      Sorry about being confusing.

I think I am trying to find the mission itself.

The way I thought it worked, was a (silent?)mission pointed to mission id#412 "Liase with Aurorans.

Mission ID 411 has the desc which basically says "...meet me in the bar in one hour"

ID412 then skips over to the meeting with the Aurorans and the flight into polaran space.

I thought I missed something in between.

The mission bits are always cryptic, and the Bit Bible does not give me any ideas.

I might be making this overly complicated; I tend to do that. 🙂

    • Look for the Sxxx expression. It should tell you the ID number of any missions that are started without you being completely aware of it.

Hmmm, there isn't one. I was hoping this would be easier. It seems a lot of missions refer to going to the bar, but they don't then refer to a message in the bar.

Gaaa!! It's late (for me), I'm tired, and I'll go through the game bible tomorrow and read up on the mission section. I must be missing something. Thanks for your help.

If I am still lost, I will post here again (unless of coarse, someone knows what I am going through and can point out where to go. 🙂

    • Ok, I finally figured out... that I know next to nothing. 😄

It seems that there is a desc that runs a misn file. I have no clue how this works, and no clue where that desc is.

I played the Vellos mission up to a point, so I could document this and hopefully find out what happens.

Misn ID # 411 has comptext desc# 9372 Which basically says "We've come up with a plan to deal with these Mu'hari, and we'll be needing your skills. Meet me in the bar in one hour"

You click ok, and a desc which I can't find comes up that basically says "The Mu'hari threat is too large to deal with...." (don't need to go into the details of the message)

Here you click <Okay> and misn #412 is launched.

How does a description file (module?) run a mission?

That does not seem to be how things work. Missions launch missions. But Mission #411 does not launch any missions of its own.

I have tried digging through misn data file, and have not found anything.

      I am rather confused here.

I imagine I could just replace mission id 411 with my own file that offers a choice and leave it at that. But I am still curious.

Appologies if I have typed to much or made things confusing.

Apparently other people have not run into this issue, otherwise I would have seen something about it on this board 🙂

I don't have the data files in front of me here at work...but it sounds as though mission #411 may be an auto-aborting mission, and that it sets whatever bit is needed to trip mission #412. Could this be it?

You are right that 411 sets off 412, sort of. 411 has a description that says meet me in the bar. Somewhere the bar description exists. You hit okay a couple of times, and I can just barely see it as it runs the 412 mission (I've been read through the 412 mission enough that I knew it when I saw it in the game.

There is an intermediate step. I am getting the impression that It is "hardwired" into the game, or at least this specific mission.

I have the updated bit bible, but even there, some of the bits set in mission 411 are not described.

I've been told that the Vell-os mission was a mission to get everyone used to the rest of the game.

I am beginning to think I may have to manually replace missions 411 and 412. A lot more work that I had thought I was up against :frown:

    • if you are trying to figure out how 411 connects to 412 then 411's OnSucess sets b372. 412 needs b372 and !b373 so completing 411 lets you get 412. If you want a split to occur when you complete 411 just set a random operator in the OnSucess field to set the bit you want to continue your string.

Well, I'll give it a shot and see what happens. I still think I am going to run into a glitch with that Barroom text (which seems to be attached to the bits instead of the mission.

ButI am better off comming back with complete info. Thanks

    • ive spent about 10 minutes digging through the resedit files and found out whats going on.

lets pretend you just landed at the planet that misn 411 is available at. When you land the dësc goes something like this: You sense a Mu'hari on the planet, you go and take pictures of him in the local bar, and decide to go tell Krane".

You fly to Wolf and Krane says: blah blah blah.. meet me in the bar in one hour. Then when you go to the bar it starts Misn 412. the dësc says: you wait in the corner of the bar until one hour later Krane shows up. When she gets their she tells you that the Mu'hari are too big to take care off now, so you need to distract the Polaris somehow, visit a moash commander and and procure a fleet to attack the Polaris Homeworld.

The Mission bits go like this. You land at the planet where 411 is at. you get the mission and fly to wolf 359, Krane talks to you and the mission is complete and b372 is set. This make misn 412 available in the bar.

if you want to make the mission string split after 411, then just open 411 and and find the OnSucess field. Then enter this R(b372 b8000) but instead of b8000 put whatever bit needs to be set to make your mission available.

So, then I would create a misn with b8000 & !b372 in the Availbits section?

Sorry, I am still trying to wrap my brain around the importance and use of the bits.

      not really..

if you want the mission string to have a random split where what happens is totally unpredictable, then use the Random operator (i.e. R(b1000 !b8432). That means that their is a 50 percent chance that b1000 will be set and and 50 percent chance that b8432 will be unset. So the mission string can split. If you are making an alternate path for the Vell-os missions then use that Random operator to to make it a chance split.

i think this is what you want.. im not sure.

      I'll simplify things a little. (well, I'll try anyway. 🙂 )
      1. I'd like to make this available to other people (ie upload it to the website)
1.a. This means that what ever I do has to be user friendly for everyone else to use this plugin.
1.b. For this to work, (the way I understand it) I won't be able to just edit the misn files in the Nova Files folder. (The bible says the program reads the nova folders before it reads the plugin folder)
1.c. People shouldn't have to know how to use Resedit to run this mission of mine. They should just have to put the addon in the Plugin folder.

      2. Think about the Polaris mission. There is a random chance of getting the "toys" or the diplomatic mission. I want the vellos mission to split just before you are commanded to attack the Polarans.
2.a. So, you either A. Invade, or B. Do what ever I have planned.
2.b. I really am not concerned about the randomness. The idea is to give someone a 50/50 chance of getting the "other" vellos missions.

I've emailed AAC about the first part. He made mention of a plugin that I think would help in my situation, but I am not sure.

I think I've repeated a lot, from previous posts above. I'm not getting mad or anything. I am just trying to be clear.

I notice here and in the plugins that people are doing TCs, new ships, upgrades, outfits and such, but no changes to the specific storylines. Or at least as far as I can tell. Has this type of thing been done for the other games?

    • 1. Just copy the missions you want to change from the Nova Data Files into a blank plugin, then change them. People will only have to put the plugin in the folder and then play the vell-os mission string and they will have a chance to invade the polarons or do whatever you have planned.

2.The randomess is what you want for this scenario. Using the random operator you will get a 50/50 chance of A or B happening, thats what its made for.

      ------------------

      (quote frome Nova Bible)
Note: Any resources in an Nova plugin file automatically replace
same-numbered resources in Nova’s main files. Resources are loaded from the
"Nova Files" folder first and then resources from the "Nova Plug-Ins" folder are
      loaded.
      (/quote from Nova Bible)

Ok, although I disagree with with you that all I have to do is past the mission files I want and 'Nova will read them, I still am not able to find that desc file that advances the story line.

#411 has a desn file 9372 that tells you to meet Krane in the Bar, but I cannot seem to find the rest of the text. I will post that question outside of this post (to everyone I hope) and see if any of the other developers know what I want and where it is.

Also, I have made changes in the Nova File with the misn file (after backing it up of coarse) I have changed the OnAccept and OnSuccess fields (I'm setting b8000 which is in the Availbit field of a misn file in my plugin.)

As far as I am to understand things, the program should run mission 411, and then find bit8000 in my new #900 mission in my plugin. But it isn't.

Am I just flat out missing something here?
