Whats the best way about creating some weapon sounds for Nova? - Im a graphic designer, and have prettey much no bearing as to how to go about this. Ive considered regurgitating sounds from EVC/EVO in the hope that they will blend in, although i get the feeling this wont be the case, especially with the die hard EV player who will spot them a mile off.

Firstly, does anyone know of any freely avalibly sound archives on the web? (sounds which wont sound cheesy)

Secondly, If all else fails, ill need to 'hire' someone from the boards to create a few for me.

The best way to get sounds in your plug I've found is to make them yourself. I also had no sound talent when I started out but I taught myself a bit after downloading Audacity, a good freeware program that you can get on CNet(www.download.com). To make a sound, let's use an example, a laser. Record something like a beep, such as a beep from a digital watch, and modify it using filters. Just playing around with filters for awhile helps you figure out what they do and such. Try various fades, a wahwah, or a phaser to start out with. They seem to be the best for laser effects.

Also. There's a small utility called something like SoundApp that'll extract sounds from resource files. This way you can "steal" sounds from games etc. and modify these to your use.

Tempo is also a good "filter". I've personally changed a sound of people clapping into something that sounded a bit like an alien getting shot and splattered all over the place, by increasing the speed of which this particular sound sequence was played.

Back on the topic, fooling around with filters or oddball effects can sometimes produce some weird sounds, for example, I turned a recording of me hitting my hand on a table into a decent sound that could have been used as the sound of a ship being hit by a missile.

I just did a search for Audacity on Download.com. They released an OSX version of the freeware sound editor yesterday. So far so good!
