    • Engine Glows in EV/O

TSG is still coming along, slowly. I'm working on the ship graphics right now. What I'm wondering, though, is what are good colors for the engine glows besides the ubiquitous ion-drive blue? I don't want every engine to have the same glow, ya know? (oy, i wish infini-d 3.1 could do particle effects, or whatever they're called... all i can do is put a light in a tube...)

    • Kind of a tannish-orange is good, like the EVN Valkyrie. You might try shades of purple, too.

    • Let's see.... (when I give color ranges, they go from the center hotspot to the outside)

You have your white -> magenta/red like the X-Wing and Y-Wing from Star Wars.
There's white/yellow -> orange/red like modern rockets, and many ships from EVN.
The SR-71 on afterburner has a thin broken orange glow (looks like little "pockets" of flame going back) surrounded by a faint blue glow.

Generally speaking, you're normally going to see the orange glows and blue glows more often than green and purple glows because (orange and blue) flames occur when most stuff burns. Green and purple require the addition of chemicals that I guess aren't particularly necessary for propulsion. But hey, this is the future, so anything can happen.

    • Thanks, guys. I'll probably go with an orange or red for some of them, blue for others. Two of them use white, dunno if any more will. I'll probably do white for some of the capital ships.

    • As I recall, Orangey-Red is a color produced from the burning of Oxygen+(air contaiminants). Pure burning oxygen is blue. Either way, it is something devoid of in the vacuum of space. Blues and Greens are atributed to Copper And Nickel (I'm probably wrong on that one). Blue/Green are probably more realistic because to the extreme heat put on the engines, which probably have a nickel plating on them for protection.

Here is a site that has numerous pictures of different elements in flame. Any of these would look good as an engineglow, and would be scientificly correct.

    • Hu? There are no engine glows in EV/O, they are a feature of EV:N...

Only EV Nova allows you to make engine glows appear and disappear based on movement, but there's nothing to stop you from attaching engine glows to the sprite of a ship for EV Override.

    • While I could see attaching an engine glow to a missile, attaching it to a ship would be awefully strange. A ship that is alwayse thrusting just wouldnt look right.

    • I don't do a protruding engine glow like in Nova, I just make a light source in the engine tubes. Meowx does it all the time, look at some of his stuff.

It would make sense, the reactor's going about reacting in there and making it glow.

Fusion of a hydrogen fuel in a vacuum produces a blue color. But since you don't like blue, well, you can go with anything you want. 😉

    • Well personally, I like purple engine glows. Blue are nice; they give a nice sci-fi effect if they are darker blue. Plain White is for losers in my view - theres just no creativity. Whats also nice, is gradients of color. For instance white>yellow>orange>red
      or
      white>cyan>blue>navy
      White>magenta>Purple>darkblue (as demonstrated at... (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/zombat/Ixde.jpg")http://homepage.mac....zombat/Ixde.jpg(/url)

For the most part, tho, stick with primaries. Other colors will just look odd.

As for constantly going reactors, they wouldnt make sense in my view. They would simply add speed to the vehicle, right? if the tubes were always open, the ship would go faster, and faster...

of course, I dont have a way to make it more real in EV:O so I guess I shouldnt talk.

    • I didn't want to put in scientific explanations for colors, because I have caught flak on the board for getting "too grounded in reality" previously, but since other people are, I'll jump off the cliff as well.

Orange flames occur when oxygen burns with something, carbon (I think), and is the coolest of the flames (temperature wise)
Blue flames will naturally occur when oxygen burns with hydrogen (look at the space shuttle's main engine - not the boosters - flame), oxygen+acetyline - welding torches, but they're not used in space propulsion, oxygen+propane, etc. Blue flames are hot flames.

While green and purple flames are possible, they're unlikely to occur, and if they do, it'll be faint. Sometimes the flames from jet afterburners look purple because blue light from the hotspot'll be filtered by orange flame (or the other way around). The SR-71 has a green flame for its prestart sequence (it requires a triethylborane explosion to get the fuel to ignite), but its contrails are generally blue and orange.

You could use stars as your models for glow colors. My reasoning behind that is that since ships use something high-tech like fusion engines, and stars undergo nuclear fusion, so the colors would possibly be similar. We haven't discovered any stars that glow green or purple, but the red->yellow and blue->white spectrum colors are common.

As for glows in Override, I'll bet that you've never noticed it, but all the UE capital ships have thin yellow glows in the back.

I like blue a lot, but it gets repetitive if i use it on every ship. Some are ok, like all the gurns/nebs/tickleopians, but other races would develop different tech, right?

I plan on using red for the skraddnalanians, or something.
