    • To all those who use Lego's...

What type of bricks...how many...of what colors do you normally use to construct your ships? (Gee, I hope this wasn't as stupid a question as the last one I asked)

      Thanks!

    • Heh...

The Tachyonic Fighter in the Frozen Heart was constructed out of Legos.

Personally, I use whatever I can get my hands on; I try to use uniform colors, but it's often strange colors.

Naturally I prefer to stick to gray, so I made the U.S.S. Defiant out of mostly gray pieces. I didn't have too many gray pieces left after that, so I made Voyager out of red. For some reason, I had lots of red, so I then made a Vor'cha-class Attack Cruiser out of mostly red too. Then I was lucky enough to have sufficient yellow pieces to make a Galor-class warship. The last thing I made was a Bird of Prey with adjustable wings with red (though it didn't look very good because I was running out of pieces).

Yeah, that was fun; my little brother and I play this game with these that my older brother used to play with me; that is, we through Lego pieces at each other's ships, trying to, uh, blow them up.

      Uh, well, I got sidetracked...

It really depends; I use whatever's available. I use the long pieces to lay down a framework. Stuff goes in between. I find the little cube pieces that have the little circle on one side very useful when making the weapons systems. And flat pieces are endlessly useful.

    • I used to play with Legos a lot, but I stopped playing with them before I got into graphics. I moved to scratch building models with hot glue, and whatever else was on hand. A few of those models have made it into sprites. Now I just sketch and sketch until something looks interesting.

As for legos, though, I tended to stay away from larger bricks because they weren't as "detailed" and generally didn't pay much attention to colors. It was symmetry in those wacky colors that I was going for. I once made a MiG-29 that was over a foot long. That used up quite a lot of my larger pieces, so I eventually dismantled it so that I could go to other projects. The simple truth is that I no longer have the time to play with Legos, and only slightly more to scratch build. I only have time to sketch now, and that's usually in class or something.

    • I used to play with legos as well, but now they don't have any cool sets... I'm sure you all remember the BlackTron, M-Tron, B-Tron... now what is this Bionicle crap? But anyways, I usually use grey and black for the main body, and red/blue for the extra touches. I don't use them any more, because, one, they take so long to put away, and two, I have no time. I usually use about 500 or so peices for really detailed ships, and about 15 for little fighters.

There isn't much that compares to the old M-Tron, Blacktron, Pirates, or even Aquazone these days, but some of the LEGO Star Wars sets are quite well done. The first few like the X-Wing are rather disappointing, but the Jedi Starfighter, A-Wing, Imperial Shuttle, and Trade Federation tank are all quite good.

    • Ah, legos. Anyone else use the little round 1x1x1 usually clear pieces as little people? I had armies of them fighting it out in whole worlds (and diplomacy too, with extensive plot). Built a lot of ships too. I still have a lot of them around in my closet somewhere.

The blue were the good guys, most human-like. They ended up having the most technology. The opaque blue were robots owned by the blue, and with fully sentient AI. They were extremely fast (in moving and in computing power) and hard to kill.
The green were the warrior guys, with not a whole lot of ships or population, but allies of the blue almost the whole time. Low tech mostly, but deadly on the ground.
The red had the largest ships and fleets, and lots of diversity in ship-types. They had the greatest population. Basically fought like wars like in the good ol' days, with huge armies and column-style fighting. Off-and-on alliances with blue/green or other groups, but usually not allied to anyone. Actually I take back the above about largest population, the yellow had that, but more on them later...
The (clear) white were allies of the blue. They were shape-shifters that had natural ability to cloak or take forms of other species. Mostly spies for the blue they had few ships, but where deadly in stealth tactics. The opaque white were hoverships/attackdroids for the white. Their ships were mostly transports of one kind or another.
The (opaque) black were from another galaxy. They were sent to the galaxy where everyone else is without any knowledge of where their home galaxy/world is for security reasons, or any way of getting back. They had ships rivaling the red in size, but also had much smaller ones too. They were known for the attach-ability of their ships together to form larger ships. They mask their bio-signs extremely well, and give off no apparent heat. They had good relations with the blue and red at different times, and at one point they left altogether with a warning of another group that was coming, but promised to be back. They returned to have large battles with the grey.
The (opaque) grey are the leaders of a "dominion" of sorts. They are few in number but control the "glowing green" they had no ships purely of their own except one at one point. They came from another galaxy, and are sworn enemies of the black. They are trying to find the black home galaxy, and followed the black to the galaxy where everyone else is.
The glowing green were ruled by the grey, and followed their orders without hesitation. They were terrorists/commandos, and had high-technology. They owned very few varieties of ships, and most of them were flat and fairly small. They obviously came with the grey, and hate the blue and black. They are sworn enemies of the green after encountering them, because they both have excellent combat skills.
The yellow had the largest population by far, but few actual warships. Mostly they had transports. They allied with the grey/glowing green, but did not always get along with them. Served primarily as ground troops for the grey, while the glowing green were the elite soldiers. They had the ability to crush their better-trained adversaries by sheer numbers.

      Ah, the memories...

    • Heh, ships, as in, space ships? or pirate ships?

Personally, I don't really build space ships with my legos, but when I do I generally use black and grey. Don't have much time for legos right now, cuz I'm working on HHG.

But yes, legos sets are pretty bad now.Stopped buying em about 2 years ago.

    • Heh heh heh. Legos rule. Most of the Federation's ships from Quantumire were built with the Ice Planet 2002 sets. (damn, NASA's late getting to the Ice Planet...) I still have all my Legos and make stuff... right now I'm working on a big robot dragon guy with Technic Legos:

Amen. The original Blacktron was better than the second generation; gotta dig completely black space suits.

The Space Police were also pretty cool (first and second gen). I had the big cruiser, that split into three pieces... I had lots of fun with that. πŸ™‚

I didn't know anyone even remebered the IcePlanet 2002!
Ahh the good old times i had with it...

I made a couple ships, the best ones from peices of ships from the Explorians(sp?) set, and the RoboRaptor. Mostly i used custom peices, those special blue cocpit things. The best lego ship i ever made had foldable wings, and looked like the fighter off of StarFox.

Lego has really sold out in my opinion. They've done movie after movie...
Their software is almost all PC too.

They're still far the coolest Lego people.

But I would'nt agree with you all that the new sets uniformly suck. Yes, most of em are mode out of big set-specific pieces with limited reusability when it comes to building things just out of the pieces of that set; but when you already have a bunch of Legos and get those new pieces, man, you can make some great stuff. I'm older than most of you so my Lego collection is probably a little more basic than yours, but even the sets that have come out in the last two years or so have some pieces I so wish I could have had when I spent all my time building ships. I build some things now with the kids I watch (whose collection is limited to sets released in the last 3-4 years), and I've come up with things I that like better than anything I ever could make with my own Legos. I think I might give them all mine... imagine what could be created with the combination!

(Is this post coherent? I'm sleepy.)

    • I loved making starships out of my legos. Nowadays, I will just build a model of a truck and let it sit. Of course, everything on the truck works(steering, a little battery for an engine with real headlights...). But my real forte was starships. I built voyager out of a bunch of different colors, but used up all of my slope pieces crafting the hull. It had an actual shuttle bay that could hold all of the shuttles, and all of the fun stuff. If anyone has ever watched 2001 or 2010, I built the Discovery for that one. It was about for feat long, most of it the spar in the center. The command pod wasn't really spherical, but it was close enough. I built small models of Star Wars capitol ships. They only used about twenty bricks at the most, and most of the bricks were flat. The largest was the SSD, and it was to scale with the other ones.

The old sets where very original. They were pretty nice, and were very sci-fi-ish. I bought the Star Wars sets just so I could collect them. THey may not be very pretty, but in forty years having a whole set of mint condition Star Wars legos will make a very nice retirement. I agree that Lego has sold out like a bi†ch.
