    • Infini-D 4.0, Strata3DPro, or Adobe Dimensions?

Whatch'all think is best for creating ships: Infini-D 4.0, Strata3D Pro, or Adobe Dimensions?

      Thanks!

    • Uh... POVRay 3.1g.r2... Infini-D 4.5..... SoftImage 3.9...... You're not giving very many choices here... You know, there have been like at least 10 different topics that ask the very same question?

    • I use Strata 3Dplus, so I'll recommend Strata 3Dpro, which includes some nice features. I haven't tried Infini-D 4.0, though it would probably be a better idea to get 4.5 if you can. I haven't heard of Adobe Dimensions, tell me more about it.

    • Wanna know why Adobe Dimensions isn't well known? It hasn't been advertised, nor does it have an audience large enough to attract the attention of more users.

    • And it hasn't been supported by Adobe since version 3.0, which was released back in, oh, 1998.

      ------------------

    • Well, I put in a bid on eBay for Infini-D 4.0. I wonder if there is an updater to update 4.0 to 4.5? Has anyone tried Carrara? I'm a group member of the Yahoo! Groups group called Carrara which is for Carrara Studio 2. In the messages section someone wrote in and sent a .wav file and asked "Is this how you pronounce Carrara?" I dunno how he did it, but when it plays, it plays him saying "kuh-rah-ruh" real slow, like it was recorded real time and played back at half speed. Pretty cool! I've also been contemplating Lightwave (which you can get ver. 7.0 at (url="http://"http://www.gradware.com")www.gradware.com(/url) for $390, compared to over $1500 at Lightwave's website). I hear real good things about Lightwave. If only it wasn't so pricey. But I prefer to get something that is still in production/being supported, ya know!
BTW: I think what Dimensions does is transform 2D objects into 3D.

      Thanks!

    • No, Dimensions is a basic 3-D object editor, and I mean very basic. It also had a proprietary file format which was pretty incompatible with all the other programs out there, though if I'm not mistaken you could export files to .dmx format and maybe one or two others. Not worth the effort. If you can get your hands on a copy of Illustrator 6, Dimensions 2.0 came free on the disk, but that was even more primitive.

If money's a concern, you're better off finding a downloadable copy of Strata3D Base 3.0 or one of the other free programs out there (some swear by Mechanisto, which is downloadable from the ASW site). Or hope your eBay bid wins.

      ------------------

    • Hey, money's alway's a concern! As for eBay, yeah, so far I'm winning! The starting price was GBP (Great Britain Pounds) 18.00, which is about 26.00 US. After three bids, it's up to GBP 22.00. Can you imagine a $500+ program going for less than $100? There's only five days left on the auction, and so far there have been only two people bidding on it: me and someone else. I'll let ya know how it turns out! Even though I know Infini-D 4.0 is a great program, I'd still like to find an updater to 4.5, if possible. Even though it's not in production anymore, there's still lots of stuff/info out there. I hear good things about Infini-D, so we'll see. This is a mac program, and I need to get my iMac fixed before I can even use it. Right now I'm using a Compaq Presario 5301, but I prefer my iMac for graphics work and EV/O. You're right, some swear by Mechanisto, while others swear at it. But like all graphics programs, some will swear by it, and others will swear at it!

    • you want a little tip? don't bid again till the end. otherwise you're just inflating the price for nothing. Maybe you already knew that.

    • Thanks for the tip, Sparky! That's sorta like getting in the last word, right? Of course, it all depends on whether any more bids come in.

    • You'd never guess my choice... 😉 Infini-D, although I haven't used version 4.0 that much. 3.0 was the first version I ever attempted to mess with, and I didn't get serious about 3D design until 4.5.

Cinema 4D is my personal favorite.

Actually, snipers have been endemic on eBay of late. Many of the snipers are using services like Sniper.com, which means they can snag a bid before even a DSL line can react (like, in the last ten seconds of an auction). I've tended to brickwall lately; I put up the largest proxy value I am willing to pay and let the snipers dash themselves to death against it.

There is an eBay secret, tho...do keyword searches on the entire database. You sometimes find software tucked away in sporting goods or somewhere where no-one looks.

    • Thanks for the tips, Commander Arashi! I originally did an entire database search, and only found the one. This time, however, I checked the box to include titles and descriptions and found Infini-D 4.5, new and never registered! Someone else is proxy bidding as well, but I outbid him! Hehe. Ya know, I hope I win this one and lose the first one, otherwise I'll have a copy of 4.0 and 4.5 on my hands! There's a little over three days left to bid on both items. I wonder what the real difference is between 4.0 and 4.5?

      Thanks, CA!
