I thought the pilot files were (supposedly) encrypted, so you couldn't modify them. After all, if you could change the bits set in a pilot file, then the unregistered cutoff would be useless, as you could simply skip the cutoff mission.

BTW, (url="http://"http://kevin.sb.org/evnova/")Nova MapViewer(/url), once finished, will let you graphically edit systems and spobs with a different interface than NovaMap. And once I've finished that, I plan on extending its functionality to edit different things. I've already emailed Dr. Ralph and Matt Burch about the format for the rle8/D resources. Neither one has emailed me back yet, but I'm still hopeful.

Not a valid arguement, any monkey with resedit and a copy of the bible and make the pilot log, set up a mission avilible in the bar to set a particualr bit or to deset it, just noone does as it would be cheating and too much effort.

And you can skip the cuttof in this way: if you edit the data files with resedit, the program doesn't check for it (doubt it can "shrug"), also you can include pluggins without registering but it does take a while, especialy if you want more than a bug fix.

this may be a security flaw people in high places may want to look into?

Unregistered people can't use plugins. This is why.

Once again, this can't be done with unregistered people. There's a checksum built in to Nova, and if an unregistered person uses modified data files, Nova will complain and you can't play.

So apparently people in high places already looked into it ๐Ÿ˜›

    • a standalone OSX editor would be great.

    • I think another EV-Edit for Nova would be nice; I've been using EV-Edit to fiddle around with some unpublished plug-ins for my own amusement with the original EV and EVO engines, and find it's a lot harder to do in NovaTools, simply due to the fact that everything seems to be scattered across several places. It'd be a great convenience if someone could make a utility that would have all you need for a given resource in one spot, like EV-Edit did; in the editor for the mission resource, for example, you had the description for each point in the mission readily available, as well as the pull down menus for the systems, saving valuable time from looking up what each stellar is which ID, etc... Make everything you need to make a resource be in one window.

    • While wanting to make a plug, I made an amazing discvery. EV-edit 3.2.1 can make systems for nova. Make a plug(for override), include templs, and put all your systems down, maybe even with governments and dudes, though I'm not sure about that. Anyway, open the plug in res with nova tools installed and (I suggest) you copy the systems and stuff to your own plug in nova. I did this for a plug I'm making cause I didn't want to figure out how the coordinates worked. It may work with lower versions of Ev-edit, I thought the highest one I had gave me the best chances of that trick working. I think having the origional EV templs on res might be a bad idea, Nova might not recognise it.

    • Well, I don't usually have problems when I make plug-ins but when it comes to mission strings, I go nuts. Now I thought of an idea on how to make mission bits more well organized.

If someone would create what I call a mission link feature. Basically when it comes to making mission resource I imagine it as a map layout of some kind. Think of it as the EV Map Developer's program only with missions. Instead of trying to figure out mission bit ID's you can actually literally link one mission to another much like in a way of linking objects in Infini'D. Each lil icons that look like piece of paper would represent a mission and if you click hold on it, it would bring up a pop-up dialog.

The pop-up dialog would contain options like alternative mission to link to when the player fails or if it's not a mission, it could be an item to be given at the beginning or the end. You know what I mean right?

So if you can grab this concept, don't you think that this feature would REALLY make it easier on everybody? Especially for newbies.

    • Another editor that could be useful, and probably wouldn't be too hard to do would be a graphical ฤntf layout editor. Perhaps just some colored shapes to represent the various interface elements, that the user can drag around and scale? shrugs

    • Wouldn't it be nice if somebody merged all the best editors in EV/O to create a supereditor - kinda like EV-Edit, but with no mystery bugs. I would suggest merging Shipwrite, EVOGod (has that been finished yet?) and Developers Map and Mission Computer... That would be good! ๐Ÿ™‚

As for Nova Plug-in Editors - I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I'm afraid that's not very likely to happen, as most of these editors were written in very different development environments by different people. However, when I have time to get back to it, I plan to expand MissionComputer to cover a good deal more resources, and also use its framework to develop some level of editors for EV Nova.

It allowed DrRalph to get them to ATMOS much more quickly, since he didn't have to build the underlying framework himself.

    • By the way, does anybody think it strange that all editors seem to only edit a few resources - and hardly any of them have weapon editors and outfit editors (without bugs anyway) ,which is what I really want in an editor!
Didn't R&R; software (now WootWare) say ages ago that they were going to create
      "Weapon Forge" or something?

And while I'm on this topic, does anybody know the web address where you can get updates of EVOGod by Kane O'Donell? It had bugs in the weapon editor, but it was still a decent editor!

Not strange at all. There's no point in delaying the editors you have in preparation for ones you may create at some point. Weapons and outfits are probably left behind because they're relatively simple to do in ResEdit, but maybe I'll put them in the next version of (url="http://"http://davidarthur.evula.net/mc.php")MissionComputer(/url), an editor that was originally planned as being for only missions and descriptions but has grown from there.

A Schmelta-V would be nice for Nova. ๐Ÿ™‚

Just something that contains Schmelta-V's mission editor. I loved how Schmelta-V assigned the correct dรซscs to mฤsns. And you could edit the text in it as well. ๐Ÿ™‚ I'm lazy and hate Math.

    • I skipped the thread, so some of my ideas.

      • something taht reads the data already in evnova, (like ev-deit did, i had found that really useful)

      • a better ship and shan editor, they are a REAL bitch

      • a better outfit editor although this isnt bad

      • something with the bible rules built in it, so it will read and correct the limits, to prevent crashes and save time

      • something that can create resources so they start numbering from a specified number, preferably where the nova stops

      • OSX SUPPORT!

      • being able to edit descs directly from the outfit/weapon/ship window

NovaBurst will have almost averything you asked for (-the shan editor as I can't get any RLE editing). It is delayed until after the AP tests ( I have almost literally no spare time) but it will come.

I know that making weapons and outfits in ResEdit is quite easy, but I can't (be bothered ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) to work out what desc ID goes with what weapon or outfit, that is what I am having problems with!
