I have ran accross EV at the computers at school... so i dug out my ancient mac and started playing.the problem is that i have a quadra 900 using system 7.5.5 and a non powr mac processor. does anyone know of a 3d graphics creator for a old computer?

    • I don't believe there is any 3d software (worth downloading at least) that will run on a 68040. Older versions of programs like bryce would run on a low level powermac, but I don't know of anything for a 68k mac.

Old versions of lots of software...Ray Dream, Infini-d, Strata worked on 68k macs...as for how you would be able to find them is another thing altogether...also realise that rendering will be very time consuming, getting any sort of detail into your models can be very painfull (trust me, i started doing 3d when i had a 575...and when i look back at it...ouch...can't bear to think of how patient i was)

Renderboy was designed to run on a 68K. It renders, however, very, very, very...(deep breath), very, slow.

Um...powerPC upgrades around for various machines. I think there's a motherboard that can fit in a quadra 700 (my office machine is a Centris with a G3 chip slotted in). But...a new CPU is cheaper. Can get a NuBus CPU for maybe $25 these days.

    • I think that POVRay'll also run on older computers (heck, it runs on just about any system that's out there).

      Yes, POV-Ray 3.1 will run on non-powerPC computers; 3.5 (public beta) won't. (url="http://"http://www.povray.org/")http://www.povray.org/(/url)
      (edit)
POV-Ray is also completely free; the only problem is that some people are intimidated by the interface - I'd highly reccomend reading the manual, starting at the beginning and going until you hit the reference section.
And it's definitely worth downloading; check out my homepage for some examples of what I've been able to do with it: (url="http://"http://www.rit.edu/~jxc1906/")http://www.rit.edu/~jxc1906/(/url)

Wow, some of those are pretty nice. I love the wormhole/portal thing with the ship coming out of it.

Oops. Sorry, should have specified: that one was made with Bryce - but the rest of them are POV-Ray work. (well, w/ the obvious exception of the last two links listed...)

Surprisingly, POV-Ray is one of the fastest renderers out there (that I've seen, anyway). So unless you have a decent 3D graphics card, you won't be able to get much better performance from anything, even in some sort of preview mode.
Sorry, but all I can suggest is finding a better computer to run it on, and I know that doesn't really help you at all. Good luck, though.

    • (url="http://"http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/graphics.html")These(/url) should all work well on a 68k mac, even on system 6 if you want to use that for some reason. Not all are 3D, but some are.

Mechanisto is PowerPC only. Older, but not that old.

From the site: minimum system = 1 meg RAM, 10 megs HD, 68030 or 608040 running System 7. I think the last time I touched it was on a 601 chip running OS 8.1 Primitive modeller with some handy tools (mirroring, etc.), imports DXF, ray-tracing renders and animations as a PICT file series. Well supported.

You have an extra "1" at the end of your name.
