    • Hwo to extract the original Nova ship-sprites

      Hi!

This might be a newbie question, but I just wanted to checkout how the original Nova ship-sprites looked like, and opened up some of the Data-files, but searching them all through, proved that they are not there, at least not visible to me, as PICT-resources!

      How d'you go about that?

Dang, you can't edit the Topic?!?!

    • have you checked ~all~ the data files?

    • I have and I can;t find them.

    • I have checked all of the Data-files located in the Nova Files folder, and considering the fact that resource-file "Nova Ships 4" is a 13 mb file not containing any pic-sprites, I think that somehow, I'm unable to see the graphics. I'm not talking about the shipyard pics, but the actual ship-graphics.

Has anyone been able to see these?

    • The ship graphics are not PICTs, but Rle8s and RleDs. Their sprite resources are shäns, and all of these can be found in the Nova Ships * files (where * is a number from 1 to something).

Ya, I kinda figured this out myself, but how am I able to open up an Rle8 or RleD resource? Is this even possible. All I'm interessted in, is how the sprites look. The template I have, does not include Rle8 or RleD.

      Help very much appreciated.

    • It's a set of templates by R & R Software called NovaTools just open up this file and your resedit prefs, copy everything from the NovaTools file and paste it into your ResEdit prefs. Then quit and reopen ResEdit and then open any Nova file you wish. These are the same tools that Matt and ATMOS used so you know they're good.

    • I have a slight problem. How do you edit the graphics for EVN. I know they're stored as rle8 and relD. Once you open the rescources you can't edit them. I have also tried to use R&R;'s PICT/rel8/relD/spin conversion "things", and I can't get it to work right. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What specifically is not working right? By conversion things do you mean the EnRLE/DeRLE utilities?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to use the damn things(by damn I mean: great, but confusing:) Grab a file with the encoded graphics and corresponding shän resources (say, for example, Nova Ships 1) and simply drag it into the icon for DeRLE. A dialog box will appear with some assorted options for extracting the graphics, then you get to see a rather amusing (but potentially lengthy) sequence of each graphic being spun around as the utility extracts it, and you end up with a nice set of ResEdit files containing the shäns and the sprites in PICT format, which will appear in the same directory as the original data file you pulled them from.

I have not tried this with ships(because I haven't designed any nor intend to). However I have tried it with the planet graphics and spin rescources to no avail. I see the pop up of the options, but when I try to covert it shows no graphics and produces several resEdit files containing only spin rescources.
Though now that I think of it I'll try messing around with copies of Nova's rescources and see if I can get it to work for those.

    • Remember that you use DErle to turn the things already in the Nova files to viewable PICTs, and ENrle to turn picts into the newer sprite format...

No, you're doing it right, you just need to allocate more RAM to the application. I had the same problem until I allocated something like, oh, 32-64MB. Then it will work just fine.

If that's the problem I may just shoot myself..........nope I boosted the memory to 70mb........ no help. I still get two resEdit files either empty(because I set it to not duplicate spin/shan) or with just a spin file in each. One titled planet.rleD, the other planet.rel8.

      (Edit) 😄 200th post :D(/Edit)
