    • Sidebar Modification Question

Does any one know what resource has to be modified so that the text printed on the right side of the screen in the Information Sidebar (like the ship type/ person name, cargo carried, money) can have it's color changed? I want to shange it from the neon green it currently is, to light blue or something, but I can't figure out where to go to do this, if it is even possible.

    • I think I asked Mr. Burch about that a long time ago, and he said it couldn't be done. I'd love to be proved wrong, however...

    • Nova is your answer.

      The intf resource, more specificly.

    • Thats true, in EV you can't change the side bar , but in Nova you will be able to change the whole interface.

A while back there was a plug that changed the color of the side bar to blue and grey (something like that). How did they do that?

There's a PICT resource that is the sidebar graphic, and it can be replaced in plug-ins. But it didn't change the text colors, did it?

The only way I can think of that could possibly change the text color would be to mess around with the color palette (clut resource), but I don't know if it really would work.

    • MAGMA did it, correct? I think I successfully altered SOMETHING in a long field of code once about this.

    • Good luck figuring it out.

(Hint: Don't waste your time on it. Either use Nova, or just live with green.)

    • yeah, there's probably more important stuff in the plug than that. (I hope.)

    • It can't be done in EV. However, in EVO it can. PICT resource #128 (The original is found in override titles) is the background of the sidebar, complete with shield and armour indicators. Changing the text color is pretty easy, as well. Open up the clut #1000 "Override Splash and Greens" (also in override titles), and change the two green colors to what you want. Of course, if you want a consistent look, you should also change all the buttons (found in override graphics) to look the same. I'm going to end up doing it for my plug-in. A complete changeover. If you really want to get gung-ho, you can even change the introductory screen - just make sure your buttons and the text box are still in the same place, otherwise bad things™ will happen.

    • ahem It can be done in EV. Same PICT, same CLUT. I've done it.

Anyways, it IS possible to change the colours, but it is not easy and possibly illegal. You'd have to hack the data fork and replace the required string. Dont ask me how to do it, I really dont know.

Never occured to me that the letters might take their color data from the CLUT. I'll have to try that out; thanks.

Would it not be possible to alter elements of the sidebar in the Dialog (sp?) resource? Be kinda messy getting everything adjusted right, tho...

pcs can do umlat over the eye. Its a combination of holding down alt while typing in a 4 digit number using the numpad. Do a search for character map, it will tell you the correct number combination for any given font.

    • Yeah, the same CLUT I believe controls the color of the load bar. Or maybe it was a different CLUT, but I've seen plug-ins that have made it gray or red.

Also, King Arthur, you're right, and I use a PC too, but the Mac makes it FAR more convenient to type stuff like that. I mean, who's going to go around remembering the key codes for that?

    • yeah you are definately right on that one....and for some reason i spelled I as if it were a part of my anatomy.... PCs cannot put an umlat over anyone's eyes...sorry...i dont think anyone would want that if they could....

Yep. That's it. A warning is that changing that green color will change everything that's the green color in the intro and sidebar (load bar, all text, background of the target box, etc.) I'm not sure if you have to change another clut to affect the green in the dialog boxes or not. My guess would be yes. You'd have to locate the same green color as well.

I wasn't aware you could do it in EV. I haven't really done much nosing around in the Escape Velocity file. I much prefer EVO, although it's exponentially more work.

Well, generally you only change that green color when you're redoing the intro screen anyway, but yeah.

Also, as far as dialog boxes go, these are not controlled by the same cluts -- I'm under the impression that the engine just uses the standard Mac 256 color palette for those.

And, as far as most resources go, EVO isn't really more complex than EV -- I mean, 80% of the stuff is basically the same, isn't it?

      ------------------
      Mike Lee (Firebird)

    • Only 80%? I'd say more like 87.325%.
