    • Very stale topic w/slight twist

      Thats right-another EV online topic.
Before you flame me in disgust though, please read through.
A full online version of the game would be ludicrously complex to orchestrate. Many, though, would be glad simply to have one aspect of the game to the exclusion of all others-namely, combat. There was a little network game a while ago that let one battle in helians over a network. What about a larger scale version of this, allowing one to choose from the fighters of EV or EVO? It could be organized a bit like a midget Battle.net; one could set up small dogfights with a limited number of participants, and then duke it out in an empty starfield. Even one ship, say a lightning, would make a pretty satisfying game. If at a later point more sophistication could be added, one could set up an outfitting feature and give the player a set amount of credits with which to buy a ship and upgrade it; this would add a bit of variey and the trade off factor of good ship vs. fancy upgrades. Eventually, it would be possible to use plugins; one could upload a set of ships, and use it along with the other players, much like the map download feature in starcraft.
But I am getting way ahead of myself. I just want to ask, has anyone proposed anything like this before? If so, have they followed through at all? If not, would anyone be willing to work on it?

N.B.-This is not the usual "This would be nice, but I'm a lazy bum, could somebody make this for me?" EVon post; if some people think it's a decent idea I might eventually get around to coding a slimmed down version of it. Might; I'm not an idiot, but I am lazy 🙂

    • Some people are developing a multi-player version of EV.

    • Go ahead with it. I'm sure that it will be pretty exciting to try.

    • Yes, this sounds like a spankin' good idea... But is it going to be made by Ambrosia or be endorsed by Ambrosia or be made ~unnoficially~?

(another idea is to have something like the Melee function in the Starcon series.... anyone ever play it? you get a few ships in a fleet and play against your... er... opponent...)

      Ahhh....Star Control

I was always tempted to try to make a plug that had those ships.
(through at least II, haven't played III)

    • yeah, i'm still perfecting helian wars-the multiplayer helian arena dogfight game.

i finish uni in a couple weeks, so after that i'll finish it up.

at the moment it takes all the ships and weapons from evo and you can just pick your ship and outfit. I havn't set any limits yet.

i'll post it on the board when it's playable.

Or, you could just download (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/~mburch/exobattle/")ExoBattle(/url), which is a game that uses many EV like aspects and is multi-player. It's relatively small, too. Matt Burch developed it, and it is free ware with open source. Have fun!

    • I played exobattle for a while, but stopped because I could never find people to play after the IRC channel for exobattle dissapeared. Where can you find people to play that game nowadays?

Hey, if you need it, I'll help out with the coding. I can't do graphics (I really should learn), but I can do any type of data structureing you need. That is, if you program in C/C++. E-Mail me.

    • Exobattle is awesome! I like the 2d interface a bit better, though. Heh, I'll probably say to my grandkids eventually, "In my day, we had 3d simulations on flat screens! We sometimes even had 2d interfaces!" Then they'll roll their eyes and go play SimReality 96000 or something.

      Anyhoo-
I am extraordinarily lazy, and it sounds like there are many other projects in development, so thanks but no thanks to those of you who offered to help. Try to get in on some of the other projects; I am sure your skills would be appreciated.
