Will there ever be a good EV Editor for EVO and EV, if not Nova? I was just thinking about this as I was wondering about all sorts of stray dësc IDs, and it confuses me.

There already is a good editor for EV and EV:O - it's called ResEdit. The original and still the best, though it takes a while to learn and is slow since each resource must be edited separately.
There are editors being developed but I don't believe any of them are completely debugged yet with the exception of EVO Developers Map which is excellent for creating and editing sysyems and stellars.
Some of the ID# confusion can be clearted up by using EVO Formula Calc to compute all the necessary ID numbers associated with a particular resource.
Formula Calc and Developers Map are available here:

ShipWrite is very good in my opinion, being almost bug free. It only has one or two problems such as failing to load weapons sometimes, but a quick burst of ResEdit can fix that, and the time you save compared is amazing...

There is also a decent program called EV edit- a modified version of resedit. It works decently well, and is easier to understand if you're new at it. In combination with resedit (to patch up some spots it unfortunately doesn't cover), I find it works very well. The later versions work for EVO, too. There are some good utilities for specific areas also, such as ShipWrite and Planetforge. If you do plan on using resedit exclusively, be sure to get the EV and EVO bibles.

If at first you don't succeed, use more duct tape.
The validity of EV-Edit is arguable at best. Unless you are willing to take a big risk of extensive bug fixing, you should plan to avoid this program.

EV-Edit is worse than useless. Its buggy resource-writing code thrashes resources at complete random, and its only redeaming feature is accomplished by Pontus' EVO Developer's Map with infintely more finesse. Also, it's bloody overpriced.

Aaaarrr, i'll make ye an editor and i'll sink it to the bottom of the ocean too.
I just have never made a plugin before, so i have no idea what resources do what or how they're structured. I know there's all those dev guides, but seriously, they're crap at explaining anything.
So, if some willing individual wants to team up and tell me, in english, what an ev editor should look like and how it works, then i'll code it.
Thing is, i'm real busy for the next 5 weeks, so you'll have to wait.

NovaBurst should be the answer to your question of whether or not a good EVO/Nova editor will ever be created. Alas I too am swamped until winter break so don't hold your breath. I hope to have a working release by the end of the year.
Tycho; If you know realbasic, I could use your help. I just need someone to start on some of the other editors while I keep trying to get the damned map and mission editors to work the way I want.
check my sig for more info.

Hehe, first off, EV-Edit and ResEdit are not related at all. Secondly, EV-Edit sucks for most things (like spïns), while ResEdit is good for MANY things (hiding folders is nice). I've used EV-Edit mainly because I didn't know what I was doing; then again, for most of the plugins I've done, all I needed to do was to replace target graphics, which EV-Edit can do quite well. All in all, use EV-Edit as little as possible, but it is possible to have a reason to use it.

Thanks for the help.
However, I have problems with a LOT of programs related to EV(planetforget, PFE, EV2SS/SS2EV) ResEdit has always been one of my favorite programs(i.e. the folders that mysteriously 'become' invisible on my computer) but I can't get stuff like PlanetForge to work. It's weird...(I'll try to DL it again, perhaps I should either reinstall my system software or just give up ;-))I have ShipWrite though, and it works really well, whoever suggested it... But I figure that if I can get the EVO developer's map to make my plugin's spobs and systems, it shouldn't be too much of a pain to do the rest.

yeah, too cool thor.

something i thought'd be cool for an editor would be an in-editor testing ground. i got lotsa spritesurface knowledge, so, to coin a term, piece of cake. damn i'm original.

Tycho, I'm willing to help you, even in the coding. I can do any data structuring or processing, but I'm not too good at bug-checking or MacOS input/output. If you can do the interface and resource I/O, I can do the rest. E-Mail me for info. That is, of course, if you program in C/C++.
And I can start work while you're busy for the next 4 weeks, then I'll hand it to you to do the interface etc. Good?
