It's some time i haven't heard news about it (by the way, i cannot remember it's name). Anyone has something to say (please be patient with my memory: i'm running low of it!)?

Exactly: i've already read that. I was just wondering if there were some news (for some reasons i could not find the topic where you announced the developing). Now i'll sitt down quietly to wait both to come out...
      thanks

Good news is, I haven't had to make any significant changes for a couple of weeks now. The last thing I did was to make is easier to specify defense fleets using a total fleet field and a 'waves' checkbox and a wave size field if you want waves. The editor now decodes/encodes the numbers for you.

Otherwise I'm waiting for beta to begin in earnest so I can get some people copies to try out.

Once beta begins for real, I don't expect any major changes to my editors, unless a major show stopper requires a change. I'm going to be dealing with editor bugs and so on, but I also want to put in the final changes and touches to Port Authority during beta testing.

In the meantime I'm resting a bit and catching up with my day job. I've also begun my own first space game (!), an OSX/Carbon only space empire strategy game. (No, it is nothing at all like Nova!)

      Cheers

PS Thanks for the helpful post David.

Great. Hmm, not being expert at all about OSX, at this point i shall post a silly question. "X/carbon only" means it will run under OSX only? Or that "carbon" means i'll get a chance to run it under OS9.x? Sorry for the silly question, but i'm going to bother about OSX only in the case i can afford a OSX compatible Mac (wich is not my case at the moment) so for the moment i remain ignorant about it (but a reply will teach me a lot, i suppose 😉 )
      Thanks

It simply means I can not worry about supporting classic MacOS CFM PPC or 68k code. It does run under OS9/Carbon, but it uses carbon events entirely, and the general design from the ground up is different to an older style MacOS application.

Anyway, this isn't the place to discuss another vapourware game, ask me in a year or so 🙂

In the meantime let's get back to EV development issues...

I believe I read in a message somewhere (unless I was dreaming :)) that your Nova editors would also work with EV classic and EVO. Is this correct? After looking at the screenshots I was thinking that this is really the way to go. No matter what kind of EV plug you're developing. A fantastic set of tools!

No, they won't. Nova resources are quite different than EV/Override resources. However, the NovaTools suite does include PortAuthority, a utility that ports EV/Override plugins to Nova, and DrRalph said that he's also developed a few more resource editors for EV/Override that will be released at some point in the future.

Damnit, I was making one about 6 months ago, does EVERYONE have to steal my ideas?

Anyway... I got to the stage where I have a planet and a nice stary background, it also has a toolbar that I can click to quit 😉 Written in C with Spriteworld...

Hey! Go for it I say. The more the merrier.

      DrRalph

PS So far I've written my own 3D vector graphics engine, and now I'm working on an A* path searcher so the enemy governments can find their own way around the 100x100 galaxy hex map. Each hex expands up to a 3D sector, and all the maps are scalable and rotatable with live feeback sliders and scrolling. I'm using C and learning Carbon as I go.

      Tag!

Thanks David again. NovaTools is the set of 24 ResEditors, and they will be free.

Port Authority does EV and EVO conversion to Nova, plus some other stuff. ShipShape, ConText and ResStore, Mish and Mash, mission bitmap II and a bunch of sprite graphics tools are additional.

These extra tools will probably be shareware/honour ware (ie about $5 each (or per pair) or something like that) if I can set up a Kagi page for them. Whatever happens though, they won't require registration codes or have ever increasing startup times or anything that sucks like that. I expect that younger users will just use them, and older more responsible developers (with incomes!) will make a donation.

      Cheers

I just noticed that EV/O comment. Yes, I have started to make EVO editors that use the new NovaTools ResEditor code I have devleoped for Nova. I've go about 4 or so EVO once to beta levels, but I must admit that with Port Authority being so successful, I've not put too much effort into EV/O editors, there doesn't seem much point anymore 🙂 . I will put some time into EV/O once Nova is released though and things calm down a bit programming wise.

      Cheers

Ok, thanks David. I guess I must have been confusing Port Authority with the Nova editor suite.

Heh. As a younger user I can safely say that you got that right 😉 (and the fact that at the moment I only have $10 after I blew away the rest of my money on a Saitek joystick hopefully explains to the world that I have absolutely no cash to spend on them).
