    • ResEdit 3.0 ?

I have used ResEdit 2.1.3 for a long time now, and I now see it's unable to edit the MacOs 9.0 icons with 16M colors and transparency. I have heard of ResEdit 3.0 but I don't know if it truly exists, and where I can find it. Does anyone know?

    • ResEdit's last version was 2.1.3

Anything else you see is fake.
'SuperResEdit' is just ResEdit with all the standard modifications you probably already have (CODE editor, kcs8 editor, fmnu/fmu2 editor etc).
SuperResEdit also comes with a useful extension called Forker, which adds the Data Fork to resedit's window as a resource of type '<DF>'

    • Actually, there is a ResEdit 3.0, it's just that nobody ever hears about it because Apple did NOT release it. Some other smaller compnay did, and from the sounds of it, 3.0 has plenty of new features...

Noone said it didn't exsist, however, ResEdit 3.0 isn't made by a "company" and probably wasn't made by apple. It's a modified version of 2.1.3 (the last Apple version)probably made by some dude who wanted to slightly upgrade ResEdit for whatever purposes. 3.0 doesn't have "more" features...in fact, I find it a bit klunky and the only real noticeable difference is the slightly redone interface. Just stick to 2.1.3...

      PEACE YO!

I have never actually used "3.0," just read about it online. I still use version 2.1.3...

    • Heh. Wouldn't ResEdit 3.0 be cool? Unfortunately the only way that'll happen is if they open source it, which won't happen. Apple has unofficially discontinued it, just like hypercard, hunh. Though ResEdit being discontinued is very bad.

    • Sad to see that ResEdit isn't going anywhere in terms of updates and new releases. It's got to be the most powerful program editor / builder out there.

Hypercard is extremely old software, so I'm not really surprised that it has been discontinued. I still love the program, though. 🙂

Yeah, I wish Apple would just open-source the software that they aren't making anymore, then ResEdit would be modern. :sigh:

    • According to (url="http://"http://www.resexcellence.com")http://www.resexcellence.com(/url) ResEdit 3.0 was a version for the Copland OS, and the only additions it had was a couple of extra resources for this OS. Like the Copland OS, 3.0 is now defunct.

    • I have a copy of "ResEdit 2.9"; the only differences from 2.1.3 that I can see are that it includes Forker, and doesn't crash my computer. 🙂

It shouldn't crash your computer at all. ResEdit is one of the most stable Applications around.

Mostlty right. Apple did start a ResEdit 3.0 for Copland, and some early development versions did get out, but they were generally difficult to use and incomplete, and a real step backwards from 2.1.3 as far as normal resource editing was concerned.

There are some useful plugins for ResEdit, like forker and the great Ira Rubin dissassembler, but 2.1.3 was the last official version. I'm just glad to have been able to get my MPW setup to compile ResEdit plugins, so NovaTools and EVOTools can work in this great tool.

The plugin architecture is dependent on a 68k assembler jump table to call ResEdit routines from inside the plugin - so it is definitely tied to 68k code, but I use it regularly in OSX and it works fine. Hopefully it will live on for some time to come.

    • Yes, the 2.1.3 is still interesting and useful - except it's obsolete for MacOs 9.0 icon editing.

There are photoshop plugins for doing that. Work OK too. Iit is also possible to write a plugin for ResEdit, but no one has so far. Mostly from a lack of awareness that it could be done, that and the fact that it would be a lot of work 🙂

Finally, Resknife at (url="http://"http://freespace.virgin.net/nick.shanks/mac/resknife.html")http://freespace.vir...c/resknife.html(/url) may become the way forward. Ask Nick Shanks about it 🙂
