    • I agree, Strata is not only good, it's free.

The last time I was on this board, the price of dumb questions was really high.
      Ask me what I'm doing.

    • Yeah... If you want some more free renderers try mechanisto... It's also pretty good (and powerful) I heard.

    • Strata is...well...unknown to me. I couldn't figure it out. Mechanisto is underpowered compared to other software but that doesn't mean it can't turn out decent to good images. Look at Kwanza's stuff!

DeAdBoY, just because you know Lightwave, don't say everything else is weak. 😉 Besides, Lightwave isn't free. I don't hear you suggesting anything...

Personally, I use Infini-D (not free), but will move to Lightwave in the forseeable future. As for free, demos can be used with difficulty and screenshots, or Strata (probably the overall best for free) if you want to take the effort to learn it.

    • Deadboy gets a karmaslap for being annoying.

Otherwise, I would recomened Strata for spline modeling and mechanisto for primative deforming. The two are not compatible as far as I'm aware, but they are both free.

Mechanisto's only problem is the lack of a raytracer.

      (edit)get's? What's get's?(/edit)

    • I use Strata because I REALLY don't want to waste big bucks on more software... I'm waiting for the time I'm buying a new computer...
Plus, for a free program, Strata kicks butt! 🙂

Mechanisto's real problem, zero compatibility period. There is an import dxf option, but It only works about 10% of the time after the dxf model is throughly edited. It needs an export option and it needs better rendering. Mechanisto is good for the begninner, cause it's pretty easy to learn and get the hang of. It's got a great shader editor, better than most of the expensive programs IMO and it handles transformations better than other programs.

Oh well, I take a 3D graphics design class in fall...=P (Lightwave and 3d Studio Max)

      PEACE YO!
