    • Search for a 3D program...

I need a 3D program to do some simple 3D outfit icons. Infini-D would be good, but a demo version (if it exists) because I do not want to spend (much) money in it. At most a shareware program, or tell me where and how to buy Infini-D.

    • Unfortunatly, Infini-D is no longer supported by MetaCreations or any other company, so it is almost impossible to obtain legally. I would recomend something like Mechanisto or Meshworks if you are a beginner at graphics, they are both good programs, many people use Mechanisto on the boards, I'm sure they'll be willing to extroll it's virtues.

How much ink I just injected is none of your concern,
Unless your on terms of understanding the omega,
He controlls the mix so you can inherit the heater.

    • Infini-D is not made anymore. Strata3D is avalable from Strata's website (url="http://"http://www.3d.com")www.3d.com(/url), and it's free (but you have to give them your name, e-mail etc.).

      ------------------
"Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."

    • To bad about Infini-D. Wasn't that the program that made all the sprites in EV/O?

    • Mechanisto and Meshworks, where can they be obtained Necromicon?

    • Don't go for those; they're too complex and they're overall low-quality.
I recommend you go with Strata too. It's extremely well-rounded and has more features than you can shake a stick at.

    • Is it easy to use? Also, where can I get this "Strata"?

    • You can also get Amapi on the coverCD of this month's Digit (or do I mean CGI)?

If you're French (which the original questioner was) then you'll like Amapi because i) it is French and
ii) you can set it to run entirely in French.

It's also a beautiful and intuitive programme, with much better modelling than Strata. Strata can also import Amapi files directly, meaning that you can use Amapi's superior modelling with Strata's superior texturing and rendering.

    • Get strata, (url="http://"http://www.3d.com")www.3d.com(/url), it's free and its great.

Your links do not work. I know what it is: the comma URL bug (the one in the quote of Arada pilot should work). Thanks everyone!

    • I agree. Strata is the way to go, but not the current version, because it sucks. The version I use was a freebie on the November '98 Macaddict CD πŸ˜„

Amapi's good for more organic modeling; and doesn't it lack an actual rendering engine?

    • Another program is Pixels 3D studio, which is also free at (url="http://"http://www.pixels.net")www.pixels.net(/url) . I
try to use it, but it is a bit complex for me.

BTW, does anybody have a copy of Bryce that they would be willing to part with?

    • Mechanisto is actually quite good, but isn't intuitive and has limited help.

      Pixles 3d sucks ass.

Meshworks is very good, but has a few bugs. I'd only recommend it if you want to do low poly stuff, need to export to 3dmf, or like the "blocky" look that it gives to things.

RenderBoy, if it's still around, sucks ass. πŸ˜›

    • I have to disagree with some of the verdicts on Strata3d. This is vastly superior to previous versions - but it does require a recent-ish machine running OS 8.6 or higher.

I would put programs mentioned in the following order, once power and intuitiveness are taken into account.

      1 Strata3d
2 Amapi (intuitive and powerful, but limited rendering)
3 Bryce (good rendering, intuitive, but poor modelling)
4 Pixels 3d (very powerful modeller, but a tad buggy and limited rendering)
      5 Stratavision 5
      6 Stratavision 4
7 Mechanisto (less intuitive and not particularly powerful)
      8 POV Ray (v unintuitive)
      9 RenderBoy (v unintuitive)
10 3dJoy (not much to recommend it)

    • You can get mechanisto from the EV (NOT EV:O) addons page. got to (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/ev/")http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/ev/(/url) and click on the addons link.
