    • Now taking graphic editor recommendations...

      Adobe Photoshop: $600
      My EVO buget: $0
The look of dissapointment on my face: Priceless

There are somethings money can't buy, for everything else, win the lottery.

Now, i want to design ships, so is there a free editor out there? I know this is probrobly the kiss of death asking this, but i would really like any suggestions. Any help greatly appreciated!!!

    • Making ships can be done in a 2D program like Photoshop but it is far easier in a 3D editor like Infini-D (discontinued) or Strata 3D.

Since you are on a budget of well, nothing, I would recommend getting either Strata-3D (a free 22Mb download from (url="http://"http://www.3D.com/")3D.com(/url) ) or mechanisto available from the EVO Addons Page I think, but I dont know the link. (am i a poet or what!)

      What. 😄

To Clicknett: If you are looking for a graphics editor similar to photoshop, try graphic converter. It's free. I don't know the URL though :frown:

Alternatively, if you can scrape togther $100, you could get photoshop LE, which does just about everything the full version does. There is also another adobe program called photo deluxe that is bundled with many scanners and printers, but it's more oriented at editing existing images. It does have a handfull of neat FX filters though.

And then of corse there is always Apple Works, which comes bundled with all Macs. It can be used for designing ships (in an extremely limited and fustrating sort of way)

    • I have all of those things: Graphic Converter, Appleworks, but wouldn't it be IMPOSSIBLE to do shadowing and make it look good?

    • Mechanisto renders pretty good shadowing.

I went a bit overboard on the lights, but never the less, you can do stuff with the program...

      nut. 😄

    • That pic is really cool! Looks overly eloborate, though. I've tried getting that program, but it's hard to find a working link, and even then, a complete file.

    • While mechanisto syas it is shareware, nobody can find the guy who wrote it. IIRC, someone found him back in the discboard era, and he said it was free for anyone to use. It's only downfall is the lack of raytracing, but it is a very good program if you get used to it.

You can get Mechanisto from (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-redirect.pl?path=ev/utilities&file;=Mechanisto.sit.hqx")http://www.ambrosias...hanisto.sit.hqx(/url)

I dont know why it isnt in the EV:O files...

    • It's in the EV add-ons, first page of the utilities section. EVO developers should definitely check there. There are a bunch of good utilities there that I don't think you can find on the EVO add-ons page.

    • Looks spif! I downloaded Mechanisto,(thanks, Kwanzar!) and it looks really powerful! I've never handled such a cool app before, is there a tutorial out there for total graphic newbies?

    • Before you go down the Mechanisto route, you probably ought to check Strata3d out (link as someone's earlier post). It is much, much easier to use, and far more powerful - that's not to say there's anything wrong with Mechanisto, but there's about five generations of 3d software development between the two programs.

Not weak , surely... like blackhole said, except for the lack of raytracing it's a pretty good program. I have Strata 3D as well and, to this point at least, I much prefer Mechanisto.

But of course much is due to personal preference, and as the refrain goes on the image board: 'It's not the program, it's the artist.'

Yet another possibility, if you have a PPC or a windows box, and are willing to have a dual boot system, is to install linux and run GIMP. I'd say it's Photoshop quality, and free.

Does anyone know if GIMP ports to OSX?

Man, that is some good stuff. Are you, by any chance, able to do some ships for an EVO plugin? I would really appreciate that, and you would get credit, although not much else (I am poor).
