Purchasing LightWave to start off your career is a bit much. I've purchased my software in evolutionairy stages over years and that experience from each bit of software is almost always in other packages as well. Anyways, I also believe the wider the selection of tools you have, the better off you are.

I have 5.5. I never really did like it. I think the interface disgusted me as I found it to be very Window's-like. Especially with the way some of the things are handled. Though it had some powerful "shaders" which helped me out on a few occasions and it's modelling capabilities exceeded some of the other packages I possesed at the time, interface is a big issue with me. I don't like Inspire3D too much because of its ugly interface, even though it is incredibly powerful.
In the end, if RayDream were still supported I'd still be using it.
