    • A itty-pitty-problem with Strata

Ok... I download the free version... Get familiar... creat one or two 3D ships (they don't look half bad hehe)
Then I make my own textures in Photoshop and etc.
Then at the end of it all... I look at one of my ships and say... "How the hell do I convert this damn thing into some a sprite?!?!"
Do I take a snapshot of it... and later kinda cut out the different frames?
      can someone help me?
      Thanks, your doofus

      Arrrrrr!!!

    • Here is how I make sprites in Strata3D:

      1)Create your ship.
2)Use the animation tools to define that your "movie" is going to run at 36 fps - read the manual section on animation if you don't know what I mean.
3)Define your movie as 1 second long (36 frames).
4)Rotate your ship 10 degrees each frame, so that if you loop the animation, it appears to rotate continuously.
5)Render all the frames at whatever size you want the final ship to be, and save them as a series of pict files.
6)Use a sprite making program to stitch the picts together.

      To create the mask:
1)Bump the ambient light up as high as it will go, and fiddle around with your texturing and such until your picture is a white outline of the ship on a black background.
      2)Turn antialiasing OFF.
      3)Follow steps 5 and 6 above.

Hope this helps. This is how I create sprites, but do it however feels best. Satisfaction not guaranteed, your mileage may vary.

    • This way might be a little easier...

      1. Switch to the top view with your model pointing straight up.
      2. Select the rotate tool and select your model
      3. Advance the time to 1 second.
      4. Grab the upper right knob with the rotate tool hold the Shift key and rotate 90° to the right
      5. Advance the time another second (to 3)
      6. Grab the upper right knob with the rotate tool hold the Shift key and rotate 90° to the right
      7. Advance the time another second (to 4)
      8. Grab the upper right knob with the rotate tool hold the Shift key and rotate 90° to the right

Set the Frame Rate to 9 by clicking on the FPS selection box in the project window and setting it to> "custom"> 9

Render in QT with "all" frames selected or select 1-36 if you use the program "MovToSprite".

To get the 45° angle and perspective 3D views select the "View Window Modifier" tool and Hold the Shift Key and Drag down till it says -45°. Set your window to perspective (the first selection) by dragging the eye to the right 1 space.

I'll post screen shots of this later.

      NOTES:
Strata will always render a 37th unneeded frame if you select "All" in the rendering dialog box and MovToSprite interprets this wrong. I use Macromedia Director 4.0.4 (unavailable for purchase) to insert the frames and set the sprite size. Director 4.0.4 has the Quickdraw limitations in its stage settings that are present in mcb's implementation of quickdraw for the sprites. These limitations are documented all over the place as "y needs to be divisible by 6 and 8" and "x needs to be divisible by 6". Director 4.0.4 automatically has these limitations and thus sprites ALWAYS work in EV/EVO. After which I export as PICS and use the great PICS to Sprite converter by mcb and all works well.

    • Thanks allot!
I tried it by snapshotting each rotation I made... but it didn't turn out to well!!!
      I really appreciate this!

Yeah, it's a bit rough. Well, it's quite a bit rough, but if I find the time to touch it up and make it a little more professional I will. But odds are this is going to be as good as it gets.

It's one of the advantages of going out and buying the Pro version. You draw a bunch of 2d vector lines that are shaped however you want them, then spread them out over a length and connect them together and they morph from one line to the next through the space you've provided for them (not time). I'll post a screenshot if no one else can explain better then me.

StrataVision 3D 4.0 had skin capabilities and was given away. I don't remember the address that I stored it at, but if you search the forums for "StrataVision" (without quotes) you should find it.
