what kind of sound programs do you guys use?

I use SoundEffects...
It's fairly easy to use (better than SoundEdit IMO)...but it's pretty hard to find...

I have a whole bunch of music CD-Rs, but what format does the music need to be in for it to be used in an audio player? What software would I need to change MP3s to this format?
