I'm thinking of making a plugin for ev:n when it comes out, but I don't know what kind of program to use when making ships and outfits.

Ray Dream Studio is easy to use, but it's expensive and is no longer updated.
Mechanisto is free, but ask Kwanzar about that.
You can also get a version of Strata3D for free.
Those are basically your options, thought there are quite a few more.

Do you have a Job that pays you enough to even buy these kind of programs and learn them? If for just a plug, use free stuff...
PEACE YO!

I may not have as varied an experience as some, but Bryce and Povray are both really nice. Bryce may not be good at geometrically intricate stuff, but it has a really impressive texture editor. And povray can do some rather impressive stuff, though its not for everyone. Use povray if you can deal with a programming language, because that's basically what it is. Besides, povray is free.

What about Kid Pix! Pixel 3D 3.1.6 is what I use.

I like Strata 3d, it easier than Infini-D for modelling but colouring and textures are easier in Infini-D.

I use Cinema 4D GO for mine. I dare you to find another program that can render 200x200 pictures at 3x3 oversampling in under a minute on a PowerMac 5500/250 with 32mb of ram.
Seriously, it's a good program, kinda quirky for someone used to other 3D programs though. I still need to find out how to loft with it, anyone know?

Maybe I'm a freak, but I like doing planets in a 3d modeler.
example: (url="http://"http://wtimmins.tripod.com/EV/planet1.jpg")http://wtimmins.trip.../EV/planet1.jpg(/url)
Most modelers have fancy shaders, and you can import bump or other maps.

you may like doing in a 3D modeler but Lunar Cell really rocks and is easy to use
PS-your planet pic is nice

My top picks?
Bryce for landscapes
Strata for complex textured models
Pixels and Clayscape for making the forms that Strata can't
Painter 3d for texture maps
Poser for the human touch
Solar Cell and Lunar Cell for planetary lunacy
Photoshop for finishing anything and everything
BTW someone asked about StrataVision. I made all the FH graphics on StrataVision. However, if you have OS 8.6 Strata3d (much better) should work for you.
