Will the free strata 3D work on Mac OS 8.5?
------------------
Well it works on 8.6, so it should work on 8.5, besides screw Strata, I need Infini-d for my EV3 plug, anyone want to give me a copy, yes I know that's illegal.

You only need the installer, but the manual wouldn't hurt..

It does work on 8.6 -- but may not work on 8.5 properly. This was the case with Vision 5.
But why are you using 8.5 anyway? 8.6 is a free upgrade and 8.5 was a very, very buggy release.

Grrrrr. Don't talk to me about Strata 3D. I brought '3D World' a magazine for Ł5 ($7.50) just because it had Pixel 3D and Srata 3D free on the cover CD. When I popped the CD in my drive, Pixel 3D installed fine, but to get the reg number I had to e-mail the company that makes it. The only thing they sent m back was a reg number for a 30-Day trial. Thanks a bloody lot.
It's alright, I've got Strata 3D. Or so I thought. Apparently, for some inexplicabel reason, it won't install unless you have the very latest Flash Player installed (WTF would they do this?!!!! ). So, I visit Macromedia.com and try to download the latest version. I get this dialogue up: "You already have the latest version of Shockwave Flash installed on your hard drive." Will Strata install? Will it Fck.
Ł5 down the drain. That's a tenth of solid!!! thats almost a gram of skunk!!! What a ****ing waste. The magazine sucks, the best article being about 3D stuff in games, but that's only ****ty racing games on the PS2. I wanted to make some skins!

Ummmm... installs fine for me. Are you using Netscape or Explorer? Netscape, type 'about :plugins' and tell me the version numbers of Shockwave and Flash. If it's IE, hit the about box and hit 'support'

I use IE 5 (sorry) and the two plug-ins I thought would make a difference are:
NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave 8.0
and
Shockwave Flash NP-PPC 4.0 r27
The magazine said it might have something to do with Mac OS 9 which is what I'm running.

Sam config here. Odd. What is the exact failure error on the install? And are you running the international version of MacOS 9.0, or the North American English version?

Just got InfiniD, the alternate UE Cruiser that was never used in EVO looks kinda weird, then again I could get used to it.

Two things.
The serial number they sent you for Pixels is actually the one for the free version and for the 30 day trial of the big version. However, although Pixels has got some nice features, it is a little buggy and really isn't in the same league as Strata 3d
I've got Strata 3d running on OS 9, though I actually installed it under 8.6.
If you still have your 8.6 or 8.5 release CD, the easiest thing would be to drag the installer off your magazine CD onto the hard disk, and then start up from the earlier OS CD. It should install fine then.
I've been using Strata 3d since the day it was released on the web, and I'm still discovering power functions. The motion blur and focus blur are amazing. The volumetric mist is amazing. The antimatter function is truly awesome. It's my feeling that Strata have gone too far in releasing this much functionality for free. I've considered upgrading to the 'Pro' version a few times, but the additional stuff is modelling features that I would never use, plus some nice to have but non-essential textures and effects.
Just as an example, stuff which took all night to render under StrataVision 5 now renders in under 5 minutes at a much higher level of realism. Admittedly I'm also running a faster machine, but it seems to me that rendering is literally hundreds of times faster.
My conclusion? It is worth the install and the learning curve.
