    • Where can I get Infini-D?

So I can make some ships?

I know exactly (and I mean exactly) what they look like - but I want to render them, and I can't draw.

      Help...

    • I dunno what it's going for now that it's been discontinued, but it originally went for around $550.

    • If you want to get Infini-D cheap, and if you have OS9 use Sherlock 2 and search Ebay..I got it for $6.00...

Infini-D isn't too popular on E-bay, so you just hafta be lucky...

Mechanisto won't run on my 8500/300, and Strata 3d is a 22MB d/l. At 2K/sec, work that out. Thankx, though.

It's worth it. I've been using Strata 3d for quite some time and it can produce amazingly quality in the right hands. That's only about four hours download time. Set it to go overnight. You'll be happy.

    • Which is easier to use, Mechanisto or Strata 3D?

      Mechanisto.

    • Yeah...Mechanisto is much easier to use. Oh, what system are you using ElGuapo? I have Meachanisto running on a Power Mac 6100 at 60 mhz and a Performa 6116...One runs system 7.5, the other runs system 7.5.5...it also runs on my iMac DV SE just fine with OS9....

Another good thing about Mechanisto is more people around on the boards seem to know how to use it...easier to get help learning the program.

The only thing I really like about Strata 3D is the 3D Text...it works very well, but does not run on either of my 2 older compkuters :frown:

    • Ummm... let's see. A no longer supported, developed 3D program which

      • Has the tendency to corrupt its files

      • Has such trivial textuing capability to be considered nonexistant

      • Only goes up to phong shading (ooh...)

      • Renders slooooooowly, especially considering it's only rendering phong.

      • Has a limited UI and a limited set of primatives

      • Has no ability to use 3d cards (if present), severely limiting the complexity of your model.

      • Has VERY anti-intuitive lighting controls.

      • Laughable animation controls.

Or, one could download Strata3D for free and get:

      • A decent modeller, though it's non-support for Nurbs means it's a bit difficult to do anything organic.

      • Full set of primatives...

      • Fantastic shape instancing

      • Raytracing, raytracing, raytracing (where did radiosity go in 3.0? I miss it.)

      • Full texturing...

      • Actual timeline based animation. (You can animate darn near anything in Strata, including textures)

      • Multiple, non-global, non-ambient light sources

      • WYSIWYG control of lights and cameras (you can literally stear the camera to the object)

And oh, it can do this:
      (url="http://"http://www.thefyi.com/~nathan/room_320x240.jpg")http://www.thefyi.co...oom_320x240.jpg(/url) (8k)

I did that. Took about 30 minutes to model, about four days to render split across five loaded-to-the-gills 400 MHz B&W; G3s. (the penalties of using radiosity to create a 300 dpi, 2'x3' image--yes, two feet by three feet)
