    • Strata 3 available free

      Go to (url="http://"http://www.versiontracker.com")www.versiontracker.com(/url)

This is the genuine article -- it's big bucks StrataStudio Pro 3 stripped down to about two steps up from the functionality of StrataVision 5, but with all of the quality, speed and interface improvements of StudioPro.

The download is 22 MB, but, given that it's free and is a very, very good little rendering package, it's definitely the one to get.

      You heard it first here.

BTW, you can upgrade to all the full features for dollars.

    • More on this one.

I've now had time to test out some of the functionality. This really is a must-have unless you already have a big-bucks 3d program.

Some of the key benefits over earlier free versions:
      i) UV mapping -- really inexcusable before, now present, better texture options overall
ii) import/export to 3ds among others
iii) much better extrusion and lathing controls
iv) lighting effects, including lens flare
      v) volumetric fog effects, plus atmosphere and gravity
vi) fast scanline renderer, v high quality ray-tracing render
vii) caustics -- much more realistic
viii) vastly improved interface -- much faster, everything is now in scene
      ix) antimatter and collision

Strata 3d only comes with a few textures, but it will happily load all your Vision 4 textures, and you can play with bitmaps to your hearts content. No procedurals are included -- you can buy these and other elements separately. However, the procedurals in Vision were only of limited use.

Warp and lofting are not included, nor are the paint-style renderings, so don't ditch your earlier version if you had it. The path extrude now works well, but the booleans have gone (not that they ever worked). There is also no particle morph -- but, well, who needed it?

All in all, this has as much functionality as earlier versions of Studio Pro when the sometimes bundled, sometimes purchased extra tools are left out.

    • I'm having trouble finding it. It doesn't seem to be on the front page of the link you gave. Would you mind telling me exactly what you entered into the search engine to find it? I'd really appreciate it.

      Sincerely,
      Zeta

    • Would you happen to have heard of the program FireWorks?
If so, how different is this StrataStudio Pro compared to it? (I already have FireWorks, and am not looking forward to a 22 MB download)

Well, Fireworks is a 2D vector graphics app for web design. StrataStudio Pro is a complete 3D package.

    • There was a working version of Stratavision 3D 4.0 on the MacAddict CD October '99 issue (#38). There were also some other 3D progams but they were limited demos.
So anyone who has this CD already has Stratavision 3D 4.0. The access code is in the readme, I think.

    • You'll need to go onto the 'next 15 days' section of Version Tracker.

BTW, this is NOT StrataVision 4 -- this is several generations later. The rendering is better than Bryce 4, whereas StrataVision 4 doesn't even come close to Bryce 2. Also, the modelling and texturing are much, much more advanced.

I actually paid for StrataVision 5, which was itself a very significant upgrade from 4, and I won't be using it any further now that Strata 3 is out.

    • This seems to be the main way for reshaping objects. However, converting to mesh or bezier will give different results.

You can purchase (but I haven't, and won't) some much more advanced modelling tools from Strata (I think it's (url="http://"http://www.strata3d.com)")www.strata3d.com)(/url) for $149. However, at that point you are comitting yourself financially, and it's probably better to look around first.

Incidentally, buried deep there are a lot more features, including lens effects such as focal depth, blurring, panorama and 3d (ie, the kind needing the funny spectacles).

    • Now if I can only find a stray T1 line laying around...

      ------------------
My decision is maybe, and that's final!

    • Is it worth an over 2 hour download? Downloading such a big file on 28.8 is bad enough, but downloading such a big file and having it be crummy is worse.

      Uh.. Yeah, I play EV...

    • I'm I the only one that can't find it?
      Can someone give me precise
      instructions or a URL?

    • Strata3D is also available now on the Starlight HL server.

    • 22 MB. This could take a little bit, it had better unstuff right. I've downloaded stuff before that just won't unstuff for some reason.

Well, it seams you won't have the last laugh today Therg. Says Captain Fullers voice over the speakers.
      Dang.
The torpedo strikes the ship removing it from the sky in a violent explosion.

It takes alot of practice to learn how to use a 3D program to it's full effectiveness, and even longer to actually make good-looking things with it. Unless you plan on making graphics for your plug after several months of hard practicing, AND the $149 for a more advanced modeller, you should just have a pro do it. Matt Dailey does custom graphics (www.grandnovice.com or something like that, might be (url="http://"http://www.grand-novice.com)")www.grand-novice.com)(/url) for a fee ($10 for a really big ship I believe). Unfortunately, he hasn't been open to buiseness for as long as that websites been up. I'd have meowx make some graphics for you. He's cheaper, and they look pretty good. There is something slightly odd with his renderer or whatever he uses to convert the images. They have "color sparkles" etc. on them. You'll see it in the Quantamire Triligy. He's still very good. If you really want to get into 3D design, however, I suggest you get the best thing you can afford. Do some research to. You don't want to pay $500 for a program that is mainly for biological forms if you want one that is best for technological.

    • Dave - two tenths of a cent?! Don't sell yourself short! 😉

I haven't used Strata 3 yet myself, but I've used StrataVision, Bryce, and Pixels 3d (another quite good free program). Each program has its strengths and weaknesses, but unless you're wanting photorealism, greebles, and the whole nine yards, you can do good work with simple, inexpensive tools. Don't go overboard and buy something like Studio Max, Cinema 4D, or Lightwave unless you really need it.

    • I render ships for free. 🙂

I taught myself some Infini-D autodidactically... I don't have much time at hand right now, but once the semester vacations begin, I'm going to build a few ships on my own. I'd prefer using them for a scenario of my own, but I haven't even started with that, and I'd never get it done anyway, so I might as well pass the pics on to people who actually use them.

There should still be a few old pictures of the Athena class starship I designed for the Star Trek universe once... never got it finished either. You might also want to take a look at the Voidhawk JPEGs, although they're much too dark. =

Why do you think they're called Void hawks? 😃
