I have a phase cannon on my cresent warship, but find it isn't very effective in disabling Vionian ships as the one on my previous ships. What weapons do you all recommend to put on my warship and where can I purchase them?

One of the things I like most about EVO is the way that there is not a clear "best weapon" for all situations. There are four main types of primary weapon:
Phase - high accuracy, high rate of fire, high speed, medium range, high damage to shields, low damage to armor, high price, low mass. Available in Miranu and Crescent space. Available in fixed cannon, front-arc turret, rear-arc turret, 360 turret
Blaze - low accuracy, high rate of fire, medium speed, medium damage to shields, medium damage to armor, low price, medium mass. Available in UE space. Available in fixed cannon, 360 turret.
Neutron - high accuracy, low rate of fire, low speed, high damage to shields, high damage to armor, high price, high mass. Available in Voinian space after missions, or on Paaren Station after missions. Available in fixed cannon, 360 turret.
Emalgha - low accuracy, medium rate of fire, low speed, low damage to shields, very high damage to armor, low price, high mass. Available in Emalgha space. Available in fixed cannon, front-arc turret.
As you can see, once you get enough money for it Phase weaponry is your best overall choice, as most of the galaxy primarily uses shields and it's also a very fast and accurate weapon. But if you're fighting Voinians, it is not necessarily your best choice.
I've personally found that for generally fighting Voinians, the phase weaponry is still effective - the high speed and rate of fire allow you to take out Voinian Heavy Fighters and Interceptors very easily, and you outrange the Neutron weaponry on Voinian capital ships if you're careful - you can kill them with minimal danger, it just takes a while.
However, as you can see from the list above there are other choices. You can get the Emalgha guns easily enough, although I've never liked them. They really mince armor quickly, but their bad range means you're often getting minced yourself before you can land any. If you've done the UE Paaren Station missions and have access to neutron weaponry they can be very, very useful against Voinians. Particularly if you need to take out something really, really tough with a lot of armor - namely Voinian Cruisers or the Voinian Dreadnought. Voinians are slow and unmaneuverable so they tend to have a lot of trouble dodging even the ponderous neutron bolts.
Personally, if I was fighting Voinians in a Crescent Warship I would load out on phase turrets as you have now, and simply fill all my secondary weapon space with standard UE Rockets. They hit nice and hard against voinians (much harder than Dispersal Rockets, Pursuit Missiles, SADs etc that you find in the Crescent) and you've got plenty of maneuverability compared to the Voinians to target and hit them if you're careful.

I second this. One well-placed rocket will disable a Voinian Heavy Fighter (Hint: Capture them and use them against their motherships). This is what really makes a human-piloted UE Fighter so deadly.

Agreed. And there's the added bonus of disabling and just stealing the rockets from Interceptors and Heavy Fighters. Can practically double your rocket load fighting a Cruiser, haha.
And on this note, I really need to go play EVO again. I mean look at that stupidly detailed post I made up there, having not touched the game in at least two years.

Phase - low mass.
Blaze - medium mass.
Phase cannons and turrets take the same amount of space as Blaze cannons and turrets, respectively. (Tonnage is a measure of volume when referring to how much a ship can hold.)
A stock Krait (no extra armor, weapons, or anything) should do fine against all Voinian ships, all the time. A stock Shuttle only has to worry about the Interceptors.

Yeah I always found it far more gripping than EVC or EVN because of the big differences between weapon types and enemy types. And from that you do build up a lot of knowledge, like that that you just divulged ... and it does seem a waste not putting it to use in playing yourself :). The time will come again!

What are good weapons?
Good weapons are weapons that are highly effective against enemy ships. Ideally, they would also be low cost, but this isn't always the case.

That's not necesarily true, take the emlaga cannons for example. The high armor dammage classify them as "highly effective against Voinians", but their high mass limits their usage, their abysmal shield dammage makes it take almost as long to knock out the shields as it does the armor, and the short range makes you go too close for comfort, reducing the maneuverability advantage one normally has. Therefore, I consider them a "bad weapon", despite their effectiveness. Of course, that's just my opinion.

If you are in a smaller ship, it kinda depends who you are fighting, if you need to take out shields or armor. I prefered to max out on shields and phase turrets, then load up on hunter missiles if I had the room, and keep with this combo the whole game, no matter who I fought or played for.
Oooh. loves Quick Edit

When fighting Voinians, if I have a somewhat large ship (UE Destroyer or bigger), I usualy grab 2 rocket launchers and stock up on rockets, throwing in a few blazes for good measure. With smaller ships, I might get a few emhlaga cannons, and throw in one cannon of another type (blaze, neutron) to take out the shields and improving my range. Neutron if I want to Monty Python, blaze if I don't.

I'm a big fan of mixing Phase and Blaze. But really, I'm a secondary-weapon kind of guy in EVO. Missiles, SADs/SAEs, even rockets, you can do quite a lot of damage to anything.
Secondary's do great damage, but they cost too much to rely on them primarily (for me at least). Turrets don't cost anything, and you don't have to fly all over to restock.

The operating cost may be higher, but the benefits can be well worth it.
Yes, when shields are low.

And remember you can steal ammo from ships you board.
Hunter Missiles are my fav. Not too many ships in the crescent carry them.
