    • turrets

      question

hey, first post. ok, after a five year break im back playing this game, as i started i realised i have the same problem as i did back then. i have no idea what gun turets ar for. they dont seem to do any thing. i was thinking its so u can fire like a turncoat or ue destroyer, but i dont know how to make em work. same goes for he reverse and sideways phase (the yellow ones?) cannons. can u help me out here/

    • Did I get you right that you don't know what turrets do?
Well, simple, they fire at a target no matter where the ship is pointing (except if it has blind spots). In order to make it fire, select the target you want to attack first. With no target selected, the turrets won't fire.
The swivel guns fire either at a target that is directly in front of you (they have a 90° aiming cone, I think), otherwise they fire just straight.
Back guns are basically like backward swivels, but they only fire if a target is selected and if this target is within a 90° cone behind the ship.

    • haha ok i feel a little dumb. so i take it the cannons fire at the same time, but u cant have backwards cannons at the same time as turrets, ill just try it out. thanks alot

    • Well, all your primary weapons (that have your target in their firing arc) fire simultaneously. So basically, regular cannons always fire. If your target is in front of you both swivel cannons and turrets can fire too. And if your target is behind you, your rear swivel cannons and turrets are the ones that join in.

    • Actually, swivel cannons fire always, too. When no target is selected, they fire like normal cannons.
      There's one difference, though:
Cannons can have an X-offset (meaning they fire from left and right of the center). Swivel cannons always fire from the center.
However, since the original ship in EVO don't use the X-offset (at least not in the version I have), you won't notice.

Turrets take turret slots, guns take gunslots. So actually you can have guns/swivels and turrets at the same time (that's how I used to equip my Aradas).
BTW, swivel guns are more accurate than turrets, especially at high speeds but also in general.

And actually you're not dumb (or if you are then I am, too 😉 ). When I started with EV, I kept wondering what the things are for (I didn't speak much English back then). I saw turrets but couldn't afford them at first. When I drew an image of a luxury liner, I drew it with cannons all around, one for each direction.
After all, turret is not in the vocabulary you learn at school.

    • You wouldnt belive how much thats helped.

    • Something it took me a while to learn, and that really raised my game, was pressing the 'R' (retarget) key.

(With apologies to all the regulars who have known this for years...) Retargeting switches your focus to the closest hostile craft. Essential if you're using turrets or guided secondary weapons. When being overflown by fighters that move quickly out of range, this makes sure you're shooting at something you stand a chance of hitting.

    • Ah, yes. The handy dandy 'R' key. Before I found out about that button I was pressing 'tab' lots and before I selected the the ship that was attacking me, it had killed me.
