The Ultimate Conspiracy - Part II
Dash Riprock hung up the MessagePhone on his ship and hit the bulkhead. For some strange reason, he couldnÂ’t get through to Helena, and no one would listen to him or speak to him. The secretary said something about a communications system upgrade.
“Great, just great...” Dash said to himself. “The system goes out just when I need it most.”
He turned to Daros. “Get the engines fired up. We’re going to Athena*.”

- Athena, the Miranu capitol.

Several days later, Dash landed on Athena. The planet was beautiful; with the marvelous and well crafted capitol city, blue sky, massive fields of green grass. It was a paradise.
Walking into the Miranu capitol building, Dash approached the secretary and showed her his badge. “Now, are the communications lines upgraded so that I can speak with Helena?”
The Miranu frowned. “I didn’t hear anything about that. In fact, I don’t remember speaking to you before at all. Sure you aren’t confused with someone else?”
Dash shook his head but had to leave to check up on his ship, the Instigator. As he exited the building, he saw another cloaked figure approach the secretary, but then Dash turned and had to show his ID, then proceeded to his ship. If he had only watched a few moments more, he would have seen three other cloaked figures approach the secretary, one of which was holding a phase rifle.
A message had been recieved from the Kayans, reporting that the capitol was finally secure and the last of the Rebels had been slaughtered. Well, slaughtered wasnÂ’t the word they used, but Dash knew it was a slaughter. The Rebels were hopelessly outgunned and outmanned, and yet continued to fight to the last platoon, to the last rifle, to the last man. It seemed such a waste, but realistically, nothing more could be done, for the Rebels had made up their mind; no surrendering. A few did surrender, of course, but these were few in number and driven to surrender only by starvation, constant bombings, and cowardice.
Dash walked off the loading ramp of the Instigator and smiled at the ship. It had been given to him when he became cheif investigator, and it had been through quite a lot of action. Tracking smugglers, government raids, engagements with Pirates, inspecting frieghters, you name it.
What it hadnÂ’t been in yet was a spaceport gunbattle, but this wouldnÂ’t last forever. As Dash spoke with another Miranu military officer, he noticed out of the corner of his eye another Lazira. It was painted black and red, and he just noticed the phase turret on tome swing round and pointed at the Instigator.
”Get down!” Dash yelled as the turret fired. Fortunately Daros had seen it coming, and the Instigators shields were activated. The ship then returned fire with Phase Neutron turrets. The other Laziras shields were quickly blasted away, and a few bolts of phased neutron energy blasted into the ships hull near the engine section. The right wing of the ship disintigrated in a ball of fire as debris was thrown everywhere.
By that time militia troops were swarming the lazira. But before they could board the ship, the cockpit windows blew out and fire spewed into the air. The pilot had detonated a bomb, killing himself. As fire fighters and troopers poured onboard, Dash stared at the smoldering wreck. He overheard another Militia officer talking to a soldier. “You know, Lars Magna paints a lot of his ships black and red...
Rushing into the main government complex once again, sure that something was afoot, Dash noticed that the cloaked figure was gone and that the secretary was gone. In her place was another secretary, an Azdgari.
Dash approached her, his hand fingering a concealed phase neutron pistol. Kili, Dash’s personal guard, was standing behind him, phase neutron rifle in hand. Dash spoke to the secretary. “I need to speak with Helena immediately.”
“Did you try and pre-arrange your meeting?” she asked.
“What? I tried! I called you up but you said the communications lines were busy.”
“Ah yes. Just a moment...” the secretary said, reaching into her coat pocket.
”Kili, now!” Dash shouted, drawing his weapon and blasting the Azdgari in the chest. “Traitor!” he yelled as she tried to stand and draw her weapon again, but was blasted back by another energy bolt.
Dash suddenly turned as two cloaked figures emerged from a closet, phase rifles drawn. Kili saw them, however, and blasted one into the wall before they even saw him. Even for an Azdgari, Kili had fast reflexes.
Dash ducked behind the desk as the other figure opened fire with his rifle. Kili jumped behind another table as another figure ran into the hall carrying two small phase submachine guns.
Dash fired at the new figure, hitting him in the shoulder but not killing him. As Kili also fired on him, the first figure aimed at the Azdgari. Dash shouted, but his sentence was interrupted by a loud series of pulse blasts. The first gunman fell dead, blood pouring out of his back from multiple wounds as two Miranu soldiers rushed into the gunfight.
By that time Kili had taken aim and shot at the last gunman. As a phased neutron bolt blasted through his back and out of his chest, spraying blood onto the walls and floor, the door behind Kili opened and a Miranu officer walked out, weapon draw. Dash saw that it was pointed at Kili, realizing that the officer must really be a traitor. Working fast, Dash drew his laser knife and threw in at the assailant. The knife stabbed right into his chest, causing blood to come oozing out as it cut into his heart. The Miranu wavered, then collapsed on the ground.
Dash got up to check the pulse of the fake secretary. She was dead, along with all the others. He looked up and looked at Kili and the ever growing number of Miranu troopers. “Search the building and arrest anyone suspicious!”
Dash then looked around a hallway to the right. Checking several doors, he suddenly came across one that was knocked. It was for storage, and when Dash knocked, he heard a muffled noise from inside.
Knocking in the door with a swift kick just a few inches below the door-handle, the investigator opened the door fully and came across the real Miranu secretary, bound and gagged.
It was at that moment that Dash would have been killed if it were not for his instincts, which saved him and the life of the secretary. Dash felt that he was being watched, and began to turn around as the door on the opposite side of the hallway opened up with a bang and the last cloaked figure emerged, turbophase pistol in hand.
Riprock saw this, and swiftly kicked the gun out of his hand. But he didnÂ’t have time to grab his own pistol, and so sent a flying punch at the attacker, who blocked it and several more punches. Ducking under a kick, the attacker (who appeared to be an Azdgari) grabbed his hand as he tried to punch, and kicked him in the back with his arm. Dash fell, pulled his weapon and stood up. The attacker had his weapon, and fired. Dash ducked and fired at the attacker, who was too fast and did a head stand. Pushing off with his hand, he flew into the air, spun, then landed on the ground and his two feet. Dash fired, the attacker ducked and backed off and hid behind an open door.
The two exchanged shots at each other, and then the attacker rushed out, jumped onto a door, pushed off from the door and flew at Dash, who had done the same thing. The two enemies, constantly firing but missing, collided in midair and fell to the ground. Dash fell on the floor with the attacker on top, but with a swift kick and jab the attacker was sent flying over his head and to the floor.
As he struggled up, Dash already had his weapon drawn and brought it directly to the side of the enemies head. “Dodge this.”
BLAM!! A bolt of phase neutron energy blasted into the attackers head and some blood spurted out. As the figured dropped to the floor, blood oozing from his head, Dash looked at him grimly. Reaching down to check for ID or anything useful, Dash found a distinctly Pirate looking laser knife, as well as a small but powerful turbophase bomb. Dash assumed it was to be used against Helena, but the Pirate hadnÂ’t been able to set it yet.
As the secretary was revived and debreifed, Dash messaged his new Horoth contact, who said that the bombing of a bus in a Horoth city (which had killed the first contact) had been linked to a black and red colored lazira that had visited Horoth space a few days before.
There was, however, one point that was most disturbing.
While looking through the wreckage of the bridge of the battered Lazira, the Miranu engineers (that had been assigned to look through the wreckage and try to find anything of use to the investigators) had found a singed but easily identifiable Quantum Pistol.
Quantum Weaponry was only used by a few governments; the Kiran - who had disappeared, the Federation - who would never do such a thing as to give Pirates weapons, and the Pirates of the Milky Way - the United Pirate League, who would definitely ally themselves with Lars Magna and his Pirate legion.
Now Dash would have to travel back to Deneba, and then to the Milky Way to continue the investigation...
