    • EVO Speed Issues

      Hey everybody.
EVO has MAJOR speed issues on my Perfoma 6200 (75mhz 603e, 16MB ram, 1.2GB HD). This machine execeeds the minimum requirements by a condsiderable margin, yet even with the spped cranked up to max, AND caps lock on, its BARLEY playable. I've allocated as much memory as possible to it. Is there something I'm missing, or is this machine simply too slow to run EVO well?

    • Hmm...16MB of memory doesn't sound like what it needs. I think Override defaults to 12MB, and I always kicked it up to 32-45MB. Get more memory chips, or use a different computer.

Also, the Performa 6200 was a fluke that should never have been made. I have a 75MHz 6200, but it seems as if it runs no faster than 45MHz. My 6100/60MHz surpasses it with flying colors.

    • What OS are you running? With only 16 MB of RAM, you would really need System 7, as OS 8 takes up so much of it that you'd probably be running EVO on virtual memory alone (which is why you need more memory).

That performance level sounds like how it is on my LC III.

    • I think the RAM is the issue. EVO ran slow on my old Performa until I upgraded to 64MB RAM.

    • I'm running 7.5.5.

    • You should be able to double or quadruple that RAM for under $50. Of course, the older macs use slightly cranky types of SIMM, but still... somebody, somewhere will be only to pleased to dust off a 32Mb SIMM or two and post them to you.

It'll really give the machine a new lease of life. Upgrade the RAM.

There used to be ways to gimmick the startup so that the Mac thinks EV:O is its operating system, and boots straight to that, without using significant RAM on the OS... but is it worth a couple of hours of messing about?

    • I'll try to get my hands on some old 72-pin SIMMS.

And yes, I could trick it into thinking EVO was the OS, I know how to do that.

    • I had a Performa 6200 :frown:
That's why I persuaded my parents to get an iMac 😉

Though I don't know how much it'd help, I think I remember 7.1 being faster than 7.5. If you still have it lying around, it might be worth a try, though of course, nothing beats the extra RAM.
