    • For some EVO information, check out (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum8/HTML/000739.html")this thread.(/url)

Here's some infor on the UE, straight from Peter Cartwright himself:

      Quote

**If UE seems like Western Europe, I would suggests that this is mostly because it contrasts strongly with well-known future United Earth/humanity examples like ST and B5 which (because they are produced by and primarily broadcast to) Americans, feel like America-in-space. (I often notice things like this in plug-ins or stories: references to the UE President, for instance. While United Earth does have a President, his role is mostly formal and just as a technical head of state (for a state which isn't entirely sure it is a state) - and it's a rotating position, and few people would know who it was at any given time (bit like Switzerland). So to see a US-style President portrayed (especially if he acts somewhat like Harrison Ford in Air Force One) amuses somewhat.)

      ...

What the UE is based on is what might have happened to the Great Powers of the 19th century (who, yes, you will note were European) if a) they'd been colonising space, not the rest of Earth, and 🆒 just around the time when the first world war would have been due, some unpleasant aliens arrived, forcing them to cooperate to survive - a cooperation which then continues once the crisis is over because the people of Earth begin to realise that they have more in common with each other than everything out there (so, in fact, a very European influence and reference, just not the one you thought it was).

A few other things: Planet names are fairly evenly distributed between the peoples and nations most likely to be first out there if (in the mid-21st century) interstellar drive did suddenly appear. If there's a slight bias towards European names - well just be glad I limited truly regional influence to one shuttle which might be called the U.E.S. Ipswich - rather than naming every last bit of space dust after small villages in Suffolk.

There are three UE Flagships (the Incontrovertible, the London and the Earth) - the London is a conceit on my part of course: no one would ever have been able to get that named passed for a Flagship. Trying to find a good name (ie. acceptable to all parties) for such a flagship would be difficult: it couldn't refer to any place or city, person or myth, anything at all in fact, which corresponded too closely with any particular country. Impersonal things like Victory or Defiance might sound okay - except that 'the Victory', at least, was of course the flagship of a rather famous British Admiral. Not to mention that the name would have to translate well into half a dozen other languages at least. I don't think there has ever been a warship called the Incontrovertible - and it's probably a good example of the sort of silly name the think tank involved would eventually come up with.

The 'capital' of the United Earth (or more correctly, the current seat of the United Earth Parliament) was at Lyons at one stage, however it rotates (in another mission it's in Lima) - how could people on Earth ever agree to have one fixed capital? There is no city 'international' enough to be acceptable. Everyone speaks British English because I speak (and write) British English - and didn't want to attempt corny American accents for any of the characters.**

The UE has a parliamentary system of government, which I included when I made "Reign of the UE."

      God bless,

      UE Patriot

P.S. The aforemewntioned thread went on a tanget or so on European countries, Russia, China, etc., but there's still some good information there.

P.P.S. Despite what Peter Cartwright said, I still think the Voinian Empire is evil. 🙂

    • The stuff about naming UE ships that UE Patriot mentioned, it's true they are distributed evenly. However this game is not the first umm thingy to name ships from various countries on Earth.

Star Trek does that too. While I am working on an expansion scenario, I have actually (believe it or not) used AppleWorks to create a database of all the names of every warship that there has ever been on the face of this planet, some of them dates back as far as almost to the American Revolution. So far I got most of what I could get from the internet.

I've collected warship names from not only the United States Navy, but from Russia, Germany+(Nazi), British, Indian, Australian, Japan+(Empire of), and even French names.

These are names based on ships that are alive or dead.

I have also tried to come up with names based on legends and myths from Earth, like William Wallace, Ghengis Khan, Jeanne d'Arc(I think that's right), Julius Caesar, Aleksandar, Richard the Lionheart, Crazy Horse, Quetzaquatle, Jormugand, Ifrit, Aires, Athena, etc.

If I ever get to finish the list, this could make a good download for an addon, if somebody every wanted to make përs ships.

    • About the Emalghas, the game portrays their spaceports and ships as shabbily or hastily put together.

<From this, I'd surmise that they are a poor race with rags as the like native dress. A kinda sad people, but who have hope, and a kind of sure patriotic fierceness look about them.> (sorry for the speculation)

    • Just for speculation's sake, let us remember David Arthur's point that the three strands are descendents of a now-forgotten civilization.

This can be interpreted many ways, but here are two of mine. The Two Different Schools of Thought.

All three strands should have similar characteristics.

All three strands have been so long descended from the ancient race, that it is no longer capable to distinguish them, as too much time has passed.

I always envisioned the Azdgari as snakes with several arms, perhaps 4, to coincide with the Azdara's wings. The multiple arms would allow them to perform the quick maneuvers of an Azdara.

      Just some thought :D.

    • I found a site with physical descriptions of the alien species in EVO. I don't know exactly how "accurate" these descriptions are but it's pretty neat for those of you who are interested.
      (url="http://"http://www.carnotaurhq.com/golden_horizon/info/other_info/alien_descriptions.html")http://www.carnotaur...scriptions.html(/url)

"Voinian: The Voinians are a quite burly and muscular race. They stand about 6' 4" tall on average, have grey, reptilian skin, and have fairly large teeth, though they don't use them much. They are quite muscular and thick looking, and have large, purple eyes on their Komodo Dragon looking heads."

Whoa, very radical in imagination, but dude, WTF is it with amphibian and reptilian stuff?
I mean, have you notice that if this person would of actually describe the human race, would he mention reptile, amphibian or something related to that to describe some of our feature. I kind of think that all the other race would physically relate more to eachother on their physical aspect and leave us out of it.

    • I think the adzgari would look similar to the gecko in the Gieko Auto Insurence commercials except with sharp teeth and sly expression.

    • I think everyone forgot about the Hinwar, what would they look like?

And the Dieri? I know they weren't part of a major story, but the situation was similar to that of the Hinwar, rebellious and defiant.

It be an interesting note that if they regained control of their planet, their official language would be in Voinian.

There was absolutely no description on the Hinwar at all.

i would figure that the hinwar would have some similar characteristics to voinians, such as same skin hue or eye color, perhaps due to the polution on the worlds that they jointly inhabit. the voinians could be anything as long as they're not portrayed as immaculately clean. oh, and isn't there something about igadzra uniforms that says that they cover their entire faces?
