It says that EV Override requires a 13" or larger monitor. iBooks (at least the inexpensive ones) have 12.1" monitors, so it seems EVO wouldn't work on them normally. Is there anyway to make it work, like switching the resolution or something? I'd like to know this before I buy an iBook...

Now, what's a good idea for something to put in my signature?

    • I'd just buy the iBook and worry about this later. If EVO is the primary consideration in buying an iBook, you must not need one too bad. And if the small screen would be a problem, you could always buy a monitor for the iBook or just get a desktop Mac.

    • It's not that big of a deal, I'd just like to know. Of course, I guess the best way would be to try to install it on the iBook I want...

What really annoys me is that Apple used to be offering an iBook that cost only $100 more than the basic one, except this $100 more one came with a DVD player. Now, however, to get that, I'd have to pay $300 for one that had a DVD player and has 100 more megahertz. I don't care about megahertz, I just want to get the cheapest iBook, preferably one that plays DVDs. Oh well, there's always my iMac.

    • There used to be a problem with Powerbook keyboards that they couldn't register more than 2 keys pressed simultaneously (plus modifier keys). I don't know if this affects the current generation but it might affect your play of EVO - pressing Z for afterburners, A for autopilot to keep locked on, space to fire and R to retarget is a pretty common occurrence... you might want to check.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't think any of this should affect your decision to buy an iBook - they are cool and, great as it is, EVO is still just a game.

    • I think Imacs are fine. Theres this small handle in the back that can make you go on trips with it but I almost never take it. It has much more memory and deosn't need recharching.

    • I have EV (not 'O', but it's much the same in technical requirements) installed on an old Powerbook 5300.

I had to redefine the keys, because the cursor keys are in a non-standard arrangement rather than the usual 'inverted tee' on a laptop keyboard. Once that process was complete, I had no other problems with controlling the ship through even the most hectic space battles.

Also, it worked despit the screen size. The "12-inch monitor" rule-of-thumb refers to some very old monitors that came with LCs back in 1991-94; anything more modern than that should be fine. I suspect the non-standard 640x400 resolution employed in those days is the limiting factor.

    • Is the cheapest iBook the one with 300mhz?
I use the above iBook to play EV/O/N and haven't encountered any problems, except a few RAM problems with Nova.

Calling an iMac portable is a real stretch. It's hardly a laptop.

    • I run EV/O/N on my iBook. 12.1 inch monitor 600 mHz Combo model. No problems.

Okay, thanks. Then it should work on the 12.1 inch monitor 500 mHz CD-ROM model, right?

    • I don't see why it wouldn't. You can probably customize your iBook. They allow you to buy extra RAM, bigger HD's, and I think they allow you to upgrade your disc drive.

    • I've ordered one of the new widescreen iMacs. I've been waiting three weeks now... can't be much longer! I'm wondering what games will look like in widescreen; I expect that they'll appear as normal, with a black stripe down either side.

Naturally, EV:O will be one of the first things I migrate to my new computer. Amazing to think how many happy hours I have had in the EV:O universe.

    • I have at one time or another run EV, EVO and even EVN on my iBook 300MHz with no problems at all. Although it's nice to have the extra view on my 17" Apple Studio Display on my G4, but the iBook works fine.

This may be the case for many games, but based on the way Escape Velocity works, I think it will probably just give you a wider viewing area.

As for the iBook, the actual requirement for EV Override is not the 13", but just 640x480 pixels resolution or more. At the time the game was released, no monitor smaller than 13" supported 640x480 resolution, but that's no longer the case. The new iBooks have 1024x768 pixel monitors, enough to run any of the Escape Velocity games with plenty of viewing area. Actually, I don't think any current Apple systems support resolutions below 640x480 pixels.

    • I've played EVO on my clamshell iBook for years. 12.1" display at 800X600. Buy the iBook.

Related question: if it gives you a wider viewing area, does that mean EV will want more memory?

I would expect so. Actually, since Escape Velocity is set with what was a reasonable memory requirement in 1996, it's usually a good idea to increase it anyway, since new computers have plenty of memory, and it's rare to be running much else at the same time, since the first two games aren't exactly multitasking-friendly.

    • I have been playing EVO on a PB 1400 for a couple of years with no problems. And I played EVN on a Dual USB iBook 500 with excellent results.
