I purchased a Sigma Mount Reinforcement which should have allowed me to add something like 4 additional guns and 2 additional turrets to my ship. I finally gave in, made the purchase, went to get more weapons, and discovered much to my chagrin, that I was unable to do so. While it makes my ship a more valuable trade-in, it doesn't help me take on bigger ships and win. Is it still a question of having enough space?

Yes, you must have the required space. It just adds to your ship's gun/turret slots. For example, a ship with 3 gun slots can only carry three cannons, no matter how much extra space it has.
