Apparently, my combat rating is Ultimate. I have completed alreay two major objectives, and beasten up whole fleets of Voinians and Azdgari and Zidagar... I have what they call the Most Powerful Warship in the Galaxy (Igazra)

Most major planets have several hundred ships for defense. Try backwater strandless worlds and moons for starters. Also, Outpost Topel (DSN-1158, west Voinian space), and Meria (Sumer, northeast of the UE) have...unusual defense fleets.

Defense fleets are big. Once the ships stop coming, though, the fight is over: demand tribute from then again, and they'll pay it.

little known fact: Isled's defense fleet = 2 vonian interceptors. lotsa dough from that one, i can tell you--just be carefuol not to kill the vonian dreadnought or you lose your planet.
It has seemed best to me to dominate systems when I have several escorts, all with separate fighter capacities; the defense fleets ignore them, and are chewed to bits. I usually hang out in a corner, and wait to kill any ships that get through the ten to thirty escorts/fighters screening me. It's not very exciting, but it works.

Hrm, okay, not sure about this (too lazy to test it) but at a guess its wrong and don't listen to him (at least the 'lotsa dough' is wrong. I would say that he's talking crap except that I haven't played EVO in a while :p). Taking over planets gets really boring after a while, but at least with escorts you can kill the enemy with help that won't die.
It takes a long time, and isn't really worth it, but gives you something to do. When I got to that stage though, I found it easier to give up and go to sleep 
Oh yeah, Earth isn't the best planet to try (might as well offer some real advice :p)

They kept on coming and coming? Sounds to me like you forgot to finsh. After you demand tribute and destroy the defense fleet hail the planet and press demand trubute again, the red hostile sign should turn green and say dominated.

NO WAY! Do not take over Council Station. Your escorts will be destroyed. I will be shocked if you do take over COuncil station.
Dominating planets gets very boring. The only challenge I find in it now is to find the planets with the weakest defence fleets. Outpost Topel definately has the most pathetic defence fleet, I managed to dominate it in a shuttlecraft :D.

I am the overlord of all the Voinian Systems! Well Ok I had a Forklift but still... Voina has the biggest defense fleet. I was fighting it for 15 minutes without the Station. One Voinian system on the far west is reallly wierd. It has UE Transporters and UE Freighters for a defense fleet! how wierd!

This is a REALLY cheap tactic... If you beef up a Cresent warship enough, it can be more powerful than beefed up Igazra's... but whichever you choose, max it out with armour and shield enhancers and demand tribute in the upper right hand parts of the cresent... in one of my games I had most of the cresent dominated - INCLUDING THE WHOLE OF THE ZIDAGAR... AND thatis with out using your pathetic tactic... get a good escort fleet (even if you have to piss the Azgari off to do so - their warships), and dominate as many of those planets as you can...
Hey, this leads me to a question.. I've got an Ultimate rating (recently updated to Legendary with the 'tech8' thing..) now there's nothing to do in the game besides taking over worlds, which I can do except for four: Voinia, Zidagar, Igadzra, and the coucil at gadzair.. obviously these are the capitals of the governments and would naturally be the most difficult.. but are they even possible to dominate??? I've attacked Igadzra for example for about 20 minutes, destroying about 40 ships a minute, making 800+ ships.. and they keep on coming.. should a planet even have such a large fleet? its ridiculous!

I don't think so. The Igazra has more shield and more weapon space than the CW
