I just looked at the addons page for PoG, and I noticed that no one has posted a plugin since July. I was just wondering why.

Plugins in development:
Murder in Pine Swamp
by Rubber Ducky
Description:
This is a sequel to DiD. Rubber Ducky does not want any more details leaked, so I can't tell you any more.
---
The Four Mages
by Cafall
Description:
The plugin has caused more ruckus on the web board than any other plugin since the progress log was (or wasn't) last updated (which was last year, around this time, Christmas 2002). Essentially, this plugin adds a side storyline, new items, new spells, new locations, and new quests. Even new creatures.
Very promising, but WHERE THE @! &$%^@ IS IT?!?!?*
---
Utian Village
by Stark Bledfast
Description:
This plugin adds the "Utian Village" to the game. There are several quests you need to complete in order to get there, and several quests to do once you're there. The plugin has been hopelessly stalled until Stark gets a new computer.
---
APoGalypse Now!
by StrayToaster
Description:
Work on this plugin seems to have been abandoned, but from what I heard it involves going into the jungles of Garendall to capture a renegade commander in a limited amount of time.
(end list)
There is all this, and several other projects I have not mentioned. When Pillars of Garendall works on Panther I have a couple small plugins I might release too...

A plugin with new areas, storyline, new graphics, animations, and new characters takes a long time to build. In addition, plugin developers like to put new things in their plugins which may not have been tried before. Examples: Stark's Magic Mirror, DiD's bypass of the Guardian's chamber, CHa0s' Lightning Shield spell, just to name a few. These also take time to test to make sure they work well (and they often don't on the first try.) Damsels in Distress took me seven months to construct. I think Spells Expander and World of Chaos can claim similar gestation periods. A simple "cheat" plugin can be done in about 15 minutes. I think most players are looking for expansions to the story. We have enough "cheats" already.
I addition to the work to complete all the events in a plugin, some other pitfalls include: another life, writer's block, software problems, hardware problems, and disenchantment. None of us does this for a living. To sum it up, you'll just have to be patient. ~RD

I am pretty sure that Spells Expander took much longer to complete than World of Chaos, but that lightning shield spell...I still can't figure out how he did it.

I can't speak for others, but personally, I'm not doing any development with Coldstone until I get some evidence that Beenox plans to make it (and therefore PoG) compatible with the latest versions of the Mac OS. I'm just not interested in investing that much time in something that is doomed to rapid obsolescence. :frown:

I need a new computer, and Beenox needs to update CGE. I think I might win the race.

Didn't I put the progress log into the final release? Or did I remove it?

There was a "version histroy" included with SE, but it only showed the final released version. No progress log.

History according to RD: I have no knowledge of when Stark first started work on SE. My records indicate that the beta test team was assembled in June or July of 2002 and the first release was 9/24/02. That's three plus months of testing.
Again, I do not know when CHa0s started, but it had to be after SE was released because his plug-in takes over from SE. I was contacted in mid October, 2002 to be an alpha tester (and later beta test) this plug-in as it developed. The release date is 4/2/03. That's five and a half months of testing with a lot of revisions along the way.
I still stick with my original statement, "I think Spells Expander and World of Chaos can claim similar gestation periods."

I think I actually created a seperate plug-in for SE in April of '02. I'm not positive, because I was working on 2 other plug-ins simultaneously and was creating things that later were transferred to SE. I also released the Dev Tools somewhere during the creation of SE, as I recall having to postpone the release of SE until Coldstone was updated which allowed for some of the Dev Tool code to be fixed which SE relied upon.
So the gestation of SE is pretty skewed. I can't say that I really know how long it took to complete.

If it was April, '02 then considering time off for other behavior ( ) Spells Expander was completed in less than six months. WoC took at least six months to complete. I don't feel too bad about the seven months for Damsels because I was a complete newbie at this sort of thing when I started.
The end result is that crafted plugins take time to develop. Players zip through the plugin in less that a week sometimes, and then cry out, "When's the next one coming?"

(I hate to gravedig, but new topics clutter up so much.)
There are probably lots of small-ish plugins in development.
The lightning shield spell - make the thing go round the player, using the animation's movement thing. When it reaches a certain point, have the sprite call an event that casts a spell from the player which damages all enemies in a 0-2 radius (or whatever).
Thanks!
