I'll inform you (hey I've mastered it!)
I actually found it out by myself a while back and then came here and heard it was an established cheap move! Kinda funny. Anyway...
When you face an enemy ship, especially a slower one, they do not tend to fire their weapons until they are close enough to you that you can hit them. If you let the enemy take your tail (and have a turret or rear firing phase cannon) you can let him get just barely in range of your weapons and pound on him until he's destroyed. I learned it while fighting the Dreadnought. I Monty Pythoned if for about forty-five minutes with phase cannons. Don't use phase cannons when facing the dreadnought. Anyway, that should take care of it.

Lol ok well that's different than what I thought it would be. Thanks!

Yeah, they named it Monty Python because of King Arthur's favorite tactic - fleeing and yelling "Run Away! Run Away!" If you haven't seen Monty Python & The Holy Grail I think you should - hey Christmas Break is the perfect time!

Yes, I've seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's a great movie and should be loved by all. I just thought it was more of the Python part than the whole thing. Anyway, I should get my shareware key-thing tonight or tomorrow so I can buy a Destroyer or something wo/ getting my money stolen! Arg!

Yeah, I hated that. I finally got the game - the pre-registered CD version. No code. They mailed me the cd, it had EVO & Mars Rising. (23$ - not a bad deal)
Probably the worst time hector ever stole my monyt was just before I was going to get a Crescent Warship - that really stunk! Three mil, down the drain, ugh. I tried to get that credit stick plug, but all the links for it were cut. So I made my own plug but found that things you buy for your ship lose about 20% of their initial value. Hey, that's a lot of cash! So I just bought it. It's worth it though. Played (paranoid) with stupid Hector for a year.

I don't use the Monty Python because it's not really a tactic, it's a bug. It works because, for some reason, the AI doesn't fire. Nova fixes this problem.

i killed the Dreadnought with 8 destroyer escorts in about 2 minutes!! I had 4 from the paren station missions that I didnt finish for a long time because you get new escorts every time you jump into a new system. I obliterated the thing!

Actually... you do what you said, let the enemy get on your tail. However, you don't need to have turrets for it to work; just turn the ship backwards (you'll still go forwards as long as you don't hit the accelerator) and you can fire your stationary guns (and projectiles), as well as your turrets, at them without much fear for retribution.
Another reason that it works is that your bolts end up traveling further than the AI's, so even if they do start blasting you, it is quite possible he will miss, while you will hit, even if they are the same weapons.
And I think that is something that everyone has "discovered" on their own, then found out that everyone else knew about it, too.

Well, a newbie's gotta brag about something
The Monty Python would work by just turning around, but I find that it isn't that hard to get a turret and way easier to get out of a bind if the Igazra starts closing a bit faster than suspected.....
What you say about fire from behind can be true but weapons like Phase Cannons travel so fast and Neutron Turrets travel so far that it is hard to avoid them once the enemy begins to fire. It also seems like AI weapons just have better range because you can run from a Vonian ship but once it's started to fire at you it can hit you even if it's not on your screen anymore.
Another tip - though it may be well known too; the asteroids on the screen simply float to one side and then appear exactly opposite of where they left the screen. This means that if you can get a missile (or any homing weapon) off of your screen and you're not firing at something as fast as an Azdara or Crescent fighter, you're pretty well assured to hit it.
The stars also travel to one side of the screen and then appear on the opposite side.
(Hey, Newbies might not know this!)
