    • Cap'n Slinky-
You could be right about the launched fighters being faster... but I've noticed it from fighters that were alone, too.

      GWG-
I hear you about the auto-eject. Still manual keeps you on your toes. The only time I didn't hit it in time (and the only pilot I've lost in the Challenge) was an unusual incident, which prompts me to post this reminder for all would-be fighter pilots:
      Don't Drink and Fly!
As for ship configs, mine changes quite a bit depending on the opposition I expect. Sure, it's expensive to keep switching around, but what else am I going to spend creds on? When I finish this on Strict, I'll post the configs that worked for me.

    • Okay! I've completed the 3 objectives for the challenge! My Krait took me through most of the game - completing the Zidagar missions with the much appreciated help of the systems upgrade for dospect, and the UE cloaking device!

I discovered that I didn't have enough cargo space to complete the Kirrim ski missions, and also not enough to continue with the Igadzra missions that I had on hold - and after totally wrecking my Krait with cargo expansions and mass expansions later, I knew I had to move on. I purchased a Crescent Fighter from Mira and then equipped it with 4 swivel phase, dospect, and later, when I discovered it was possible - a phased beam! I did the Igadzra mission for the plasma siphon, which was great because it saved having a fuel scoop. I did miss the cloaking device but survived reasonably :). Explored the nebulae.. did more Igadzra missions - until I discovered that I messed it up: I was required to destroy all Azdgari ships in Diudir, but I had already helped the Zidagar gas Diumin, so they didn't show up and I couldn't get credit for completing the mission. Oh well, next time I'll complete both :).

In conclusion, it was a great test of skill and patience.. and if all ships were as smart as the Igazra, monty pythoning would be really hard! I have to say I probably used said manoeuvre quite a lot - but in a Krait anything else is suicidal. Much of the game was of course made less fun through piloting a Krait - cloaking for the duration of a battle and such things.. but it's good to know it's possible for the little guy to be the victor!

    • Holy Cow! Victory in a Krait! I was the biggest skeptic that such a thing could be achieved. That really takes skill! I hereby relinquish my self-appointed title 😄 of winner of the Crew of One Challenge to MartiNZ, who has gallantly triumphed over insurmountable odds, and is clearly more deserving than I. Were you on strict play? If not, the race is still on for a strict victor. Carry on, noble pilots!

The last time I was on this board, the price of dumb questions was really high.
      Ask me what I'm doing.

    • Hehe, cheers :)! I wasn't on strict - I tried a couple like that when I got bored with the Krait, but always forgot to either buy an escape pod, or actually escape.. I think it'd take a very long time to make it on strict - a million deaths take a while! I might try it in a CF before long though :).

    • Woah! Praise be to the krait pilot. Anyone up for a shuttle next time? (joking). Congratulations!!

I got this .sig file at insanely_great.com - don't even think about taunting me!

    • Personally I think someone should try in the shuttle. I'm pretty sure it would be impossible, but you never know!

    • Hehe, cheers all! All this dramatic response - makes me feel like I'm among Zidagar, and no bad thing :)!

Going in a shuttle would be a plan, hmm :). Shouldn't really be much harder than in a Krait, especially seeing they have 20 tons cargo! I think I'll have to try soon :).

(This message has been edited by MartiNZ (edited 04-02-2001).)

    • Most impressive, MartiNZ. As I remember, you are now the second person to finish the Challenge (sorry if I'm forgetting anyone). And a Krait... you deserve some kind of recognition for that. Congrats. When I get some kind of a graphic together for people who have completed the Challenge, I'll be sure to let you know so you can post it.

Keep in mind, though, people: this challenge wasn't about who could finish first... it's more about trying to accomplish something you haven't done before.

      GWG-
How are you making money quickly when starting a new Strict pilot? This has just become an issue for me... as my most recent pilot went the way of all great heros this weekend. I'm not relishing the idea of trying to make all that cash again.

Ah, yes, the Zidagar. Space expansions are a fighter pilot's best friend. Be careful in a shuttle, it might be more versatile than a Krait, but it's a lot slower, so it might be tough to get out of a tight spot.

    • Yeah that would be the main problem, but it also has two more jumps worth of fuel to use on afterburner / cloaking device - that would be used a lot I think!

OK. You asked for it. What I do is go and cruise around Outpost Terapin. The system one jump to the North-West is particularly good. I wait till Two opposing Capital Ships show up and then hang around the edge of the combat. Once a ship is disabled I nip in and steal its credits. You get an average of 4 to 5 HUNDRED thousand credits per time. It dosn't takevery long and its a hell of a lot easier than working for FE (my other money making scheme). Which ship wins depends on game speed but as a general rule Zidara beats Azdagari Warship, which beats an Igazra, which beats a Zidara. If you crank up the speed a Zidara can sometimes take an Igazra so that is what I tend to do 'cause Iggies carry about twice the cash of Ziggys and one and a half as much as Aggys.

Yes its immoral, underhand and invariably p***es off two or three of the strands. What did you mthink the escape pod was for? Enjoy.

    • Very clever, GWG. I have stolen from the Strands before, certainly, but I tend to prefer stealing from opponents that I have taken down. Also, in a shuttle it's easy to get blown up while sneaking in to steal if, say, an Igazra is trying to finish off a disabled Zidara. I really wish the Voinians carried cash, because I have no trouble disabling them. But shuttle vs. Zidara is a bit of a stretch.

I like your style, but I think I will stick to somewhat more honest money.

Good luck to anyone trying this in a shuttle. I just enjoy my maneuverability too much to try to whole game in one. But I guess the replacement cost is as cheap as it gets.

    • OK, OK. I've ressurected a very old topic. Sorry about that. But I did it in the end.
      On strict play.

I have done the Voinians missions, the UE central objective, the UE cruiser string, the free Huron string, the attack Pariah string, the Captains of Freeport string, the New Calcutta missions, the NPD objective, the Zidagar objective, I work for FE and the MTC, anmd finally the Kirrim string. Oh and some Saalian Brandy smuggling on the side.

I still need to work for SC, finish the Igazdra objective (I'm about half way but I don't know if I can make it) and finish both the "Attack the Rock" and "Attack outpost Zachit" missions to complete the Zachit and North Tip Renegade strings.

I've been through 14 fighters and sooooooo many shuttles its untrue.

    • Wow... it was worth resurrecting the topic for that! I believe that is the most far out achievement ever - and like all those records that people make, it should come with a disclaimer saying don't try this at home ;)!

    • ok im in
ill be trying for the dreadnaught missions in a shuttle

    • Wow, this is cool. You're all certifiably insane, especially the people taking on Voinian Dreadnoughts in shuttlecraft.

      hands out darwin awards 😄

When I read through this thread, I decided to try it with Classic EV, but then realized that it wouldn't work because the Defender (the only available 1-crew ship after the shuttle) sucks rocks through tiny straws. If, as in EV, the Confeds and Rebels gave you access to their fighters earlier in the game, it might be doable. Maybe I'll make a plug that allows that.
