    • Naturally, the fleet from Huron could receive no transmissions in hyperspace. On jumping into the system, all shayborg could see was a near-wall of Voinian ships. Not a single UE vessel was in sight. His spirits crashed from their adrenaline-induced peak. As he saw it, Earth had been lost, and the successful Voinian invasion force was occupying the space around the system.

      As their leaders moped, a few of the green helian pilots were approached too closely by a scouting Voinian heavy fighter, and a couple of the trigger-happy new pilots destroyed it with a barrage of needle missiles. It was an incredibly brainless move, though -- the Voinian sounded the alert immediately before dying in a brilliant flash, and the full wrath of the Voinian army was directed towards the intruders. Shayborg hurriedly sounded the retreat -- anything else would have been suicide, and that too for a seemingly lost cause -- and jumped back into hyperspace towards Huron, crestfallen.

      On Freeport, Telnan Ted was disgusted. All the supposedly "joint" profits earned by raids by the Captains of Freeport organization (OOC: this is how you spell it in America, you Benedict Arnold, OF ;)) seemed to be weighing down everyone's pockets but his. He was used to making gigantic profit margins solo with his sixth sense for when helpless freighters were passing by. Since he had joined the Captains of Freeport, though, he had felt underutilized and under-rewarded. His penchant for violence wasn't being fed properly, he felt; the Captains almost never went out on raids themselves for security reasons, and this forced secrecy was rubbing him the wrong way. This is just not cutting it , Ted thought to himself in disgust. We're even trying to ally with trader types like that LaVec guy. We're turning into wimpy traders that are just rougher than most, not pirates -- and that's not nearly as fun. Ted's scowl grew deeper, and he reached for the comm button. He hesitated before activating the contact. What are you, a coward? This isn't a real organization anyway, so this isn't betrayal. It's just using an escape pod before the ship blows. When we can finish off this Captains of Freeport joke, we can start a real renegade organization -- one that doesn't deal with those "respectable" types like Kordun. Convincing himself that he was doing the right thing, he touched the contact. "Hi. This is Ted. Get shayborg on the line, and tell him I'm paying back that favor I owe him ..."

      OOC: We have a spy, we have a spy ... OF, your organization is officially infiltrated. 😛

      Meanwhile, on Huron, Nash-Burn sat alone in the corner. Just a few days ago, he proudly joined the Free Huron forces led by shayborg and Starkiller. Now, he had deserted. He had not joined to fight Voinians, he thought to himself. He had not joined to get slaughtered for a government that misruled his planet and one that he despised. He joined to fight Renegades and for the glory that came with it.

      Although he was sure the Huron milita wouldn't execute him for desertion like the UE would, he no longer felt welcomed on his homeworld. He walked to the spaceport, and blasted off to Iothe for a new life...

    • ESPilot wasn't at all happy. All UE ships were ordered into the atmosphere to avoid total massacre of the fleet, which was probably the case, but ESPilot wanted to be out there kicking Voinian ass. He was sure of one thing, the Voinians were definately in a whole different league from Renegade vessels. He had ordered the ships under his command to land, and had outfitted the ships with the new Hunter missiles instead of ordinary rockets, a plan forming in his mind.

      As the 12th launched, ESPilot orderd over the intercomm "All right all 12th Brigade vessels, we'll fly around to the opposite hemisphere and break the atmosphere from there. There aren't nearly as many Voinian ships on that side, and the Hunter Missiles will serve as sniping weapons. We'll target a single ship and fire off a missile each at it, which should finish it off quickly unless it's a cruiser, in which case 2 or 3 rounds should work. When we run out we'll land and restock on missiles. 12th Brigade move out!" The 21 destroyers launched into space, missile launchers armed and blaze turrets warmed up should there be close-quarters combat.

    • It had now been ten hours since the Voinian and United Earth fleets had last exchanged fire. Except for a few minor fighter raids, everything had been quiet following the triumphant entry of the 17th warfleet division. But now, it was time to continue the battle that would decide the fate of the human homeworld. A fifth of the Voinian Imperial fleet was devoted to the Battle of Sol, and Skyblade was content to either capture earth or at least badly weaken the United Earth fleet forces.

      The humans were the first to strike. While the majority of the United Earth fleet had remained in orbit around earth, a large fighter strike force made a daring attack against the Voinian fleet, 1000 strong.

      The wave of human fighters was greeted by a screen of heavy fighters, which fired rockets and neutrons at random. Of course, the heavy fighters weren't intended to stop the wave, but simply weaken it. Several United Earth fighters were rocked by explosians before being finished off by neutron fire, but the humans simply passed the heavy fighters or shot their way through with blaze fire. After surpassing the heavy fighter line of defense, the fighters bolted towards the cruisers in groups of ten. Rockets flew, and blaze fire followed.

      Thick neutron fire forced many of the squadrons to withdraw on the first wave, but some of the more isolated cruisers were being routed and destroyed. Their neutron turrets were certainly dangerous, but they couldn't deal with swarms of enemy fighters at once.

      Fighting continued for the next five minutes, both sides suffering moderate casualties. After the humans had finished off a few extra cruisers, the fighters withdrew to join the rest of their friendly fleet.

      Moments later, the entire United Earth fleet began to slowly move forward. The Voinians understood that they would defeat the humans in an all-out assault, since their firepower heavilly favored vistory. The United Earth would have to depend on some well-planned tactics and execute them to the best of their abilities if they had any intention of winning...

      OOC: I vaguely recall mentioning that Stellar Corps name was never mentioned.
      As such, I edit out the part about wearing a uniform.

      LaVec looked around the room that he had just entered and smiled. Adjusting his tie and matching suit he responded, "I relize that you are a busy man, so I will make this short and to the point. I am here representing a group of investors, who would be greatly served, by the continuing habitation of your little station. I am here to offer you several things. First of all we are prepared to ship in a modular stardock, which could be here and constructed within two weeks, thus doubling your ship construction capabilities. Second we wish to finance the construction of 100 Helians at Iothe's spaceyard facilities, after all, why build them yourself when you can have your enemy build them for you unwittingly. We also would like to finance the consrtuction of 200 Helians from your new facilities, with one slight modification, we want all of the cargo holds to retrofitted to hold bays for your new fighters, for our own uses. And lastly we wish to show you a token of friendship", LaVec reaches into his pocket and hands a credstick with a balance of 20 million credits to OF, " so that you will see that we wish you nothing but the best".

      "Now", He said, " As to our payment for contributing to this project, " we would like several things. First we want any of our organization's personel or the personel of our allies to be able to travel to Freeport unmolested. We want your people to set up a base on Iothe so that our ships may contact you there. Also you must have ships set aside to escort any of our craft from Iothe to the safety of Freeport, as you do not hold sway over all of the renegades in the area. As part of this arangement all of our craft will be equiped with special transponder codes so as to identify them, as to anyone else they will appear as standard UE ships, althought they are not. They will be refered to as Mr. or Mrs Johnsons, and you will leave them to their own devices while abord your fine station. We want a small sector of your station to ourselves, which will be brought by us as well, so that we may have a base of operations here. Fifty of the Helians you will construct for us will be stationed here, while the rest will not. I would like work with you in this endever. Oh and one last thing, shipping of any goods that you need to maintain self suficiency will also be shipped in by our partners".

      Mr. Johnson waited for a reply from the man standing before him, hopefully this would go smoothely.

      OOC: I figured that SC and Freeport had some kinda of deal because of all the smuggling missions from SC to Freeport. Also the transponders, you know when you have those smuggling missions, it must only let you land at Freeport because you have the landing codes. Working for SC and all. This is fun. And remember Stellar Corps name was never mentioned or even hinted at either by myself or Katherine's contacts. Have fun OF... an offer of alliance and a spy, what an exciting day.

      From Skyblade's quarters the Voinian Admiral and Human fighter pilot stood watching the unfolding battle. The bright red of the UE fighters stood out in stark contrast to the hulking grey of the Voinian ships. The battle clearly hung in the balance, but it was clear to Zin that the unless Humanity recieved some boost the tide of battle would swiftly turn against them. He kept his face impassive and turned to Skyblade.

      "So Commander, are you enjoying your folly?
      Of course you think that Earth is only delaying the inevitable, but if you are wrong?
      Do you think your Emperor will congratulate you on this offensive?

      ======

      Shayborg leaned back in his comfortable captain's chair on the Dauntless and smiled. He had reason to be happy. That Nash-burn character had left, and he had been an egotistical annoyance to everyone. He hadn't even been that good of a pilot, and he only looked out for himself in battle. Shayborg had also heard that he had been blasted out of space and pirated upon jumping into the Iothe system. Served him right.

      Then, of course, through Telnan Ted, he had gained news of the large donation and assistance offered by that mysterious (and rich) man, LaVec Kordun. Staring out the viewport at the unblinking stars, shayborg lost himself in thought. 20 million credits was an incredibly massive amount, not to mention all the funds that would be needed to finance all that helian production and the station addition. Kordun had used the word "we", which meant that he represented an organization -- one rich enough to afford 20 million credits, one immoral enough to deal with these renegades, one that could use a foothold in renegade space, and one that had ships that they wanted protected interference from pirates. That last meant that this was a trading or shipping company. It also had to be one that had enough influence to span the whole southern arm of human space. Thinking through his choices, he reached two possibilities -- Stellar Corporation and Frontier Express. Of these two, FE got too much of its profits from the UE to risk antagonizing them by allying with their enemies. Even if the deal was secret, there was too much risk that some UE official would find out. So, it had to be SC, which always took pains to separate itself from the UE government. Those snakes , shayborg thought to himself. The damage had already been done, though, and the renegades had 20 million credits on hand now -- enough to buy 250 or so kraits. (OOC: kraits are a new ship, and are still a little expensive.)

      What to do now? The renegades already had gotten a massive amount of money, but they hadn't yet taken delivery of the helians and the station portion. Kordun couldn't risk sending the order by hypercomm -- no one was sure if the UE was able to monitor renegade transmissions, but they did sometimes seem to have a supernatural knowledge of pre-planned raids -- so he would have to transmit the orders himself. Ted had reported that he was piloting a heavily modified transporter, the Starhunter Omega , but that he had no escorts, presumably because the fewer people who knew about this deal, the better. He couldn't have gotten a renegade escort either; jumping into Thoso in a well-known SC ship with an escort of renegades wouldn't have looked good. This meant he was a ripe target for an ambush. Shayborg's mood lightened a bit, and the corners of his mouth turned up in a grin. This is going to be fun. "All pilots report. We're hopping over to Riomor for a little ride."

      =====

      Jumping into the Riomor system a few days later, the HMF fleet immediately detected the Starhunter Omega. As they had been approaching the Riomor system, after every jump, Ted had given shayborg updates on what Kordun had been doing. The SC official (the vice-president of inter-organizational relations, shayborg had found from SC's HoloNet site) had been busy looking around the station to see what kinds of parts he would have to order. Shayborg had planned it so his arrival would coincide exactly with Kordun's departure from the station. Hiding at the edge of the system, shayborg's sensors showed Kordun's ship leaving the station. It was definitely fast; after a few seconds, it jumped northwest, towards the DSN-8584 system. Shayborg smiled and set his navicomputer in that direction.

      =====

      Immediately after entering the system, the HMF fleet saw the Starhunter Omega taking the time to fill up its ramscoops in the empty system. Without warning, the fleet barraged the lone ship with needle missiles, quickly disabling it. Shayborg's Dauntless matched velocity with Kordun's vessel and boarded it. Walking into the ship (with a personal defense shield, just in case), shayborg found it eerily quiet. Walking past the luxurious quarters, he moved towards the cockpit of the ship. He found Kordun sitting in a plush captain's chair. Kordun, still looking unruffled after what must have been a rough attack for him, smiled wanly. "Pray tell, how may I be of service to you to avoid my demise? I think we can make arrangements that will be beneficial to both of us ..." Gruffly, shayborg ordered him into the cargo hold. "Strap in tight," he told him. "You could be useful." After seeing to it that Kordun was safely locked away, shayborg told his copilot in the Dauntless to set a course for Huron. Relaxing in the Starhunter Omega 's cockpit chair, he set a course for home on Huron, with his prize.

    • Skyblade stood before the thick, shielded window of his quarters, staring at the fleets which were about to engage. He thought about Zin's words for a moment, and then turned to him.

      "I do not believe 'folly' was the correct word, Zin," Skyblade replied after a short moment of silence. "Even you must admit that the Voinians have fought well. But I also realize that we most likely won't win this battle. You humans are fighting fiercely for your homeworld, and reinforcements from Tulir will soon join you."

      Skyblade again glanced out the window before going on. "It wouldn't be right for the Voinian Empire to conquer earth, much less the human race anyway," Skyblade said. "I respect your race as an intelligent one, eager to explore the great stars and galaxies which await them. The humans have only taken war-like action because of the us, and that is something ever race would do."

      Skyblade sat down his chair. "Now," he said, "regarding your other words, the Emperor will be most angry if I fail him. I could possibily even lose my life, not to mention my rank and military service. He demands perfection, and that is something every race cannot accomplish, and never will. But I fight for my race, not the corrupt Emperor. Just like you humans, we do have a sense of patriotism..."

      Skyblade noticed that the human and Voinian fleets were now beginning to engage in combat. This was to be one of the last few final battles at Sol, and it was time to take action.

      "Forgive me, Zin, but I must get to the bridge. Such a battle demands my service. Should you feel up to it, join me for the sake of experiencing the command deck of a Voinian cruiser. Perhaps you will find it of interest..."

      Four Voinian marines entered the room and began to escort Zin and Skyblade to the bridge.

    • As the main UE fleet went to attack the Voinian fleet, ESPilot had led the 12th Brigade around the back of the Voinian fleet, since the bulk of the fleet would most likely be preparing to counter the UE's attack. Once again, EPSilot had spotted a particular Cruiser, which seemed to have even an extra turret, and a good many vessels guarding it. "All right 12th, listen up. There's one particular Cruiser, like the other one that turned out to be the flagship, with an extra turret and a whole bunch of ships guarding it. You do see it right?" A reply came back from Kelsner, captain of the U.E.S. Paladin; "I see it sir, and if your thinking what I'm thinking we should destroy that ship at any costs." "Exactly. We'll use the same tactics as we did with the last one, except we have the missiles this time. It'll probably take a few tries, but I think we'll get it. Just go above the main body of their fleet and get so where there aren't too many ships obstructing the path of the missiles, and fire. United Earth 12th Destroyer Brigade move out!" As fast as possible, the 21 Destroyers went above the Voinian ships, out of range of their neutron turrets. The Cruiser in question was in fact the Triton Corsair, and ESPilot was sure that destroying this ship could turn the tide of the battle. As they made their way to a spot above the Cruiser, being careful not to get close enough to be spotted, the battle raged between the two fleets, both unaware of the 12th Brigade's movements. "All right, all 12th Brigade destroyers halt. Take aim at the Cruiser with one extra turret, and....fire!" 21 guided Hunter Missiles sped off towards the Triton Corsair. They swerved around the slow-moving Voinian ships on their path, taking them by surprise. The first few slammed into the hull of the Triton Corsair, and then the next few, and then more, and still a few more, until all 21 had hit the Cruiser's hull. ESPilot managed a satisfactory smile at the results. "Fire another volley!" By this time a few ships were positioned to defend against more missiles, but the sheer number of the projectiles let at least 17 of them continue past the actually readied ships towards the Corsair. Even more missiles had slammed into the Corsair, and it was in a critical state by now with one of the bridge windows cracked. But the 12th Brigade had been spotted, and fighters were being launched and sent after them as they retreated, and ESPilot decided to do something very, very reckless. "All 12th ships charge right through the Voinian lines to the UE fleet! Don't question just DO IT!" All 21 ships turned and hit the afterburners, going right through the ranks of Voinian ships. As the hulking masses turned to aim their rockets, the fast Destroyers blew past. Ships already on the front line turned to stop the 12th Brigade, but the advancing UE fleet destroyed them unusually fast because of the distraction. As the 12th Brigade cleared the lines of Voinian ships and sped through the ranks of UE ships, ESPilot said over the intercom "All right, 12th Brigade, we're doing that again for sure, just go around the opposite side and take them by surprise once again. Their flaship no doubt sustained critical damage, and they have nowhere to land and repair so we should destroy it before they decide to retreat. 12th brigade move out."

    • Oh well, ESPilot didn't give me much of a chance to defend my ship... 😉

      = = = = = = = = = =

      The Triton Corsair rocked violently from the severe damage. Skyblade's flagship was now disabled, and UE vessels were closing in for the kill as Voinian warships attempted to defend it.

      Many of the crew members aboard the Triton Corsair were dead. All the neutron turrets had been blown off, the rocket turret was gone, and the fighter bays had collapsed. She was a sitting duck...

      "Abandon ship!" Skyblade ordered as the bridge began to explode here and there. The few remaining crew members jumped from the floor or their chairs and dashed out of the bridge. Skyblade grabbed Zin and pulled him off the command bridge. Just as the door closed, the bridge collapsed on itself from direct missile hits.

      As Skyblade and his crew members ran down the hall to the escape pods, the Triton Corsair rumbled. Violent explosians could be heard, and the floor rocked and cracked. The escape pods held two people each, but fortunately, there was a generous supply of them on Voinian flagships. Skyblade pulled Zin into one of the Escape Pods. Seconds later, they blasted off from the doomed Voinian cruiser...

      From the windows of the escape pod, Skyblade could see his flagship falling apart and exploding as United Earth rockets pounded the dead remains. The Voinian warships which had attempted to defend the Triton Corsair were all decimated. The sight was amazing yet terrible... Everywhere Skyblade looked, Voinian warships were exploding, retreating, or even hyperspacing off. The Voinians had lost the battle.

      Many of the other escape pods were destroyed by stray fire as they attempted to escape. But a few minutes later, the Battle of Sol was so distant that it could no longer be seen...

      Skyblade turned to Zin. "I congratulate you," he said as he offered his hand. "Your race has prevailed. The humans have truly shown their sense of patriotism."

      The escape pod continued to blast along into the depths of space. Zin and Skyblade now seemed to have plenty of free time on their hands...

      Skyblade also realized that if they were rescued, it would be by United Earth ships. He could face death as an enemy of the human race. He wandered if he'd ever see his homeland again, much less his family which was suffering under the rule of the Emperor...

    • ESPilot watched as the remnants of the Voinian fleet were decimated, and the United Earth pilots and captains cheered insanely.

      The navigator for the U.E.S. Valkerye approached ESPilot and said "Sir, we're picking up a small object coming towards us...It appears to be an escape pod of unknown origin." "Well then let's get it and bring it back to HQ. They'll be satisfied for sure with a prisoner to interrogate." As the escape pod came closer, it began to slow down, and simply began floating in empty space. The U.E.S. Valkerye pulled up next to it and extended a boarding tube to it. ESPilot, armed with a blaze rifle and a few guards escorting him, forced open the hatch of the escape pod, revealing an unconcious Voinian, and what ESPilot saw next stunned him.

      Next to the Voinian in the capsule was a human, whom he recognized as Abin Zin, an old friend of his from the fighter academy. "Bring these two in pronto and take them to the medical bay. Report to me when they wake up." ESPilot made his way back to the bridge of his ship while the guards carried off Skyblade and Zin to the medical bay. "All right 12th Brigade, we're heading back to Earth with the fleet. Let's go." The Destroyers made their way into the ranks of other Destroyers, and ESPilot made a report to the UE flagship "We weren't present during the main fight, sir, but we managed to destroy both of the Voinian flagships and a good many Voinian ships by ourselves. I'll give you the full report at HQ. Sergeant Major ESPilot out." The fleet made its way back to Earth, still cheering wildly over their great victory.

    • The remaining few thousand vessels of the 17th warfleet division had fully retreated, pulling back to the original border. The Battle of Sol was over...

      Skyblade didn't know what would become of him next. Zin, whom he had began to trust as a personal friend (human though he was), had given him a hard hit in the head just before they were rescued. Man, these humans were aggressive...

    • Pyotr floated desperately in his escape pod, seeing the Voinians get blown to smithereens*, or hyper away, or just drift, dead. His little Voinian manufacture escape module manuevered terribly, but at least the Moon had no atmosphere. He brought it in, and divebombed the surface. The poof of dust would alert the UE's based there and he'd be rescued soon. He wathched the landscape go by, and as he did, he reminisced at the ancient movies of the Apollo moon landing. "Except now it-eh has-eh more kraters." he thought. "And more crash-ed alien ships-eh. Hey, way-te a sekkont..."
