I believe the homing systems used are basically mass detectors. Asteroids have a mass, so they sometimes fool missiles into premature detonation.

No they're not. They track the ship you have in you computer, otherwise they would target the nearest ship.

**Think of it like this: when a missle is going after a fighter jet, said jet can release chaff or flares, which, depending on the missle's guidiance system, can cause it to explode early. An asteroid flying across its path confuses it.
