The Zidagar, Igadzra and Azdgari were once a single species. I expect that if you were to find a surviving example of this proto-species, it would be living on Council Station. They have been pursuing different directions for millennia now, though, so they may well have diverged quite a bit. For example, the Zidagar homeworld is a 2G planet, so they have probably become very stocky and thick-boned.
For some reason, I have always thought of the Igadzra as an aquatic subspecies, though I have no recollection of what has led me to form this opinion. They might just as easily be a salamander-like creature for all I know. Likewise, I think of the Azdgari (spit) as a winged subspecies. Maybe it's just the styling of their ships that makes me think of them as always flitting about.
The subspecies of the strand war probably remain sexually compatible (zebra and horses can mate successfully, after all, and they diverged way back). This would suggest that where they gather together under the 'strandless' banner, their children are likely to be hybrids with some genetic characteristics from each of the parent races. This may even make them a little like the Council, though one or other of the strands has probably made use of gene manipulation along the way, so this is by no means certain.
