    • Galaxy's Edge Bar

In an attempt to further hype my plugin and to create as many Galaxy's Edge-related topics as possible 😉 I'm creating a Galaxy's Edge Bar. The bar is located on the International Space Station (y'know, the one that's been taken over by independent spacers). I figure it's a pretty neutral area, so you can be from any government. Oh yeah... and it seems that Cameron Xerxes is out to get us.

      These are the rules:

      1. You can kill people, but they get to pretend it didn't happen.
      2. I reserve the right to bitchslap anyone who says he has gravity technology.

...well, that's about it. Too many rules are no fun 🙂

    • Giule's Pulsar fighter gracefully docks with the International Space Station. He enters the bar and orders an orange juice.

    • How come no one has posted? Just becos you have not played Galaxy's Edge it does not meen that you carn't come hear.

      ------------------
      Voulez-VousCoucherAvecMoiceSoir?

    • I played it.
It was darn hard-half the time I got lost in deep space, the other half I got shot.
      Shuttlecraft suck!
BTW:Has anyone ever told you that the Aliens look like Christmas trees?

    • Ah... the Galaxy's Edge maker. I have a few things to say to you.

First off, I have spent the past 2-3 days playing it (in EVO 1.01, though. It's been a long time since I played, and I just found out about the patch), and although the concept seems interesting enough (I was thinking of doing something similar before I found out about yours), various gameplay issues made playing the game seem more like "work".

      And now, for the criticism:
1.MODIFY THE !*@&!!@! ALIENS!!! At the very least, either reduce their power or limit the systems they can suddenly appear in (perhaps just the outer systems with no one around). True story: I was taking off from Earth in my little Shuttlecraft. Next thing I know, a horde of aliens shoot in, zoom right by me, and blow me to pieces in the space of 1.3 seconds. I wasn't happy, to say the least.

2.What are all those extra buttons on the personal computer? Distracting...

3.Increase the number of missions. While in EVO, I could get 4-5 new missions by just checking out the Mission Computer, in GE I have to get them via Email (and just one at a time). It wouldn't be so bad, but the chances of getting one are slim, and the cargo missions (the ones that are oh-so-important at the beginning of the game) usually have one of the outer ports as a destination! (Not exactly accessible when all you have is a little shuttlecraft.)

3b.How come there's no government-specific missions right off the bat? I'd assume they'd want something minor, such as delivering cargo to other outposts (come to think of it, I didn't see any other Earth nation outposts besides those around Earth & Mars... is that ALL there is?). I quickly began to think of all the governments as just "a bunch of governments"...

4.Some of the ship graphics have "lines" at the edge of their sprite. It loses a bit of the realism when lines wink in and out around the ships.

5.Increase the range of the Regional Maps! They aren't very useful when the nearest port is more than 2 jumps away, forcing the player to do a bit of suicidal exploration.

6.Work on the energy-generating reactors. The Solar Panels & Kinetic Generators are almost TOO weak, while the Tokamak Reactor appears to be severely overpowered, allowing almost instantaneous regeneration of energy. (The only thing that could suck that baby dry is a trigger-happy laser fanatic.) Not only that, but there's nothing inbetween the Solar Panels & the Tokamaks. Would it be too much to ask for something like a Fission or Biomatter Reactor to fill in the gaps?

7.Speaking of lasers, don't you think they suck out a bit TOO much energy? For a medium ship like a Transporter, a single fight with a fighter sucked out almost FOUR HUNDRED units of fuel. (I should know. I couldn't beat it up and it was regenerating armor faster than my Solar Panel & Kinetic Generators could kick up the juice.) I was pissed that even a Transporter almost maxed out w Power Cells & Solar Panels couldn't build up enough energy to destroy a single dinky fighter, let alone actually try to defend itself. I had better luck with the next fighter (a Widget), but it still sucked out TWO HUNDRED units.
Needless to say I was surprised that the Ruby Laser (which only does 5-8 points of damage per hit) sucked out 10 units of fuel per shot. That was quite a bit... Wouldn't a value like 3-5 units still be enough to keep it "realistic" while allowing enough energy to actually destroy something?

8.A Marine Suit increasing strength by 200 marines? Maybe something like 20, but 200?

9.How come there's hardly any deviation in the cargo prices? I can't really make a selling of anything when everything's the same price (almost) at everywhere.

10.No escape pods? How will I survive?

11.The fighters that warped in had no fuel to shoot with, making them "easy targets". I assume this uses the fuel regen property in 1.02 (which wouldn't work in my 1.01), but I must make sure...

      MAIN FLAWS:
Starting out is very tedious, repetitive, and consists too much of guesswork. It gets boring running errands back & forth from Earth & its stations to earn enough money to jump more than just once. (Also, you often get immediately killed by either aliens or the killer robots at the beginning. I should know, I died 3 times before I finally got out of Earth orbit!)
Also, there's no storyline thread to hook on from the start, forcing the player to do generic stuff for quite a while until they build up enough force to TRY to attack something, after which they can start the plot missions. Of course, that's assuming they don't get immediately killed by the A.O.R.F.H. (Aliens Or Robots From Hell)
Finally, things seem to go TOO slow... Ships cost a bundle. It took me 2 days to upgrade my ship in EG; in the original EVO, it took me 2 hours. And yes, I'm still doing trade missions...

      CURRENT OPINION:
With a bit of work, this could be a very good conversion. But for now, I can't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the patience of a saint.

      MY SCORE SO FAR:
      40

I'll think of more when I revisit the game later.

    • Cap'n Skyblade bursts into the bar with his commando team.

"Where's my Dr. Pepper!? Believe me, other bars have found out the hard way for not handing me a DP..."

This quote right here explains a lot of your complaints. You really need EVO v1.0.2 in order to play Galaxy's Edge properly - the readme explains this. First of all, all the ships have build-in power generators, so you don't even need a solar panel (though it helps a little). There are escape pods - they're also built in to every ship.
The marine robot (not suit) DOES only increase crew by 20 units, not 200. As for aliens, where did you see them? Do you mean the Von Neumanns? Because the actual aliens only show up after the wormhole is opened, which is pretty late in the game. Perhaps this also has to do with the fact that you're running EVO v1.0.1.
Maybe I should've included a "getting started" section in the readme... anyhow, there are several good money-making missions in the beginning. You can make some money in the Mercury belt, transporting biomatter from Asimov to Hawking or Hyde. It's only two jumps, and the place in the middle has a port where you can refuel. Also, even though it may be a long distance, take the Universal Energy Corporation missions at the first opportunity. IIRC, the introductory mission pays 35,000 credits, and subsequent missions pay 25,000 each. Other than that, there are routine cargo runs, which pay 10,000 credits.

    • Hey Giule,

I have been playing GE for a little bit, to pass time till Nova comes out.

Here's my question... i'm supposed to defend the planet Ganymede from Galaxy warships, after i destroy them all and landon the planet to collect pay nothing happens. I take off again and there are no more Galaxy ships, what gives?? I also have a Beltcorp Amdromeda following me where ever i go.

      offensive brute, yet I
      can't look away.

    • Ah, yes, I just played it in v1.02. Much more improved, let me tell you that.
However, you should probably put a note in there in the next update, in big bold letters:
      ONLY PLAY WITH EVO V1.02!
I saw a mention of v1.02 but I figured "How much could change?" A whole damn lot, I guess.

Now that I've played through it, some more comments:
1.I still think you should increase the Regional Map range (3 or 4 would do nicely).
2.You still need to fix those "lines around the ships" problem. Look at the picts for the ships. (Check out the Chinese fighter one.)
3.You should still increase the number of missions (or even add a "Message Board" in place of a Mission Computer).
4.You should still put in some government-related cargo missions for the very beginning.
5.Why the heck do those damn pirates always appear whenever I take a UEC mission? It'd be nicer if they appeared for some missions, but not others. (AKA Add more UEC missions!) Usually I just let them get blown to smithereens by the planetary defenses.
6.Perhaps the ships build up energy a little TOO fast...
7.Maybe you could put in a line in the ship description telling the player what the ship's energy generating speed is? Use a made-up unit of measure, like a Semari. (Make the # of Semari=10x the # of units of fuel generated per 512 frames. So 1 unit per 512 frames would be 10 Semari, while 1 unit per 256 frames would be 20 Semari, and so on. Therefore, a Tokamak would have a generating capacity of 5120 Semari...) This would help make comparing ship fuel regen & addon fuel regen a heckuva lot easier.

      More later.

Hrm. I'm really not sure. I haven't had that problem myself. Which mission is this, exactly? That is, is it the first defense mission you've gotten, or what?

Really, this thread is getting off-track. This is supposed to be a bar , not a place to ask questions.

A transmission comes to the bar and is displayed in the big viewscreen. "It's Cameron Xerxes!" The transmission says, "Hah, I bet you guys think you can get away with trying to capture me. Well, you can't! I'm on my way to blow your little wussy station as we speak."

    • I also found a bug:
It told me to run a mission to a port called Seluceus (in the northern-most part of the map). I got there: no Seluceus. I eventually had to abort because I couldn't get to Seluceus. Perhaps having multiple systems on the same space?

    • sorry, Guile--i guess more people need to get used to your TC before it becomes a regular bar topic. and i'm going to continue the questioning.

but first, i want to tell you i am very impressed with the work you put into GE. a plug for EVO based mostly in the solar system is something i had in mind for a long time, and i'm impressed someone finally did it. regrettably, i lack the time to play--i've only done routine cargo missions.

i think Mike Lemmer's questions raise an interesting point: are you open to the idea of plug-ins based in your TC? something that would increase the number of early missions, add intermediate power reactors, that sort of thing?
