    • How does a guy pilfer?

I have just started playing the game and I have absolutely no idea how to steal credits, cargo, and fuel from any people. I tried getting a tractor beam, I tried boarding ships, I tried killing them and I still can't figure it out.

I would way rather make my money pilfering than hauling cargo back and forth.

How do I do it and what button/s do I push?

Thanks in advance, this will save about 1000 hairs from my head.

    • You need to disable the target ship first. Then pull up above it parallel to the angle at which the ship is pointed and press "B" for board. A screen will come up giving you several options, one of which is taking the credits.

    • Okay, how do you disable a ship without killing it? Every ship I attack, I either seem to kill or be killed.

Explain this to me like I am a 4 year old, which I am starting to feel a lot like.

Thanks Captain, I am getting closer... I hope to be pilfering very soon...

    • You just need to be careful with the target ship. Small fighters just blow up. If you go for something like a helian or a scoutship or larger you keep beating the hell out of it with your weapons until the box around it turns grey and the image of the ship says disabled. Don't be overzealous. If you just keep pegging it til it's shields are down and give it a few more shots, depending on what it is, you'll disable it. Happy pirating...er...pilfering.

    • You should also note what area of space you're in. Crescent ships have lots of shields and very little armor, so once their shields are down, be very careful or you'll kill them. Voinian ships are the opposite. Don't be fooled when their shields are down, because they have mostly armor, and you'll have to keep sluggng away for a while. On the plus side, Voinian fighters and interceptors can actually be disabled, unlike other fighters, because they have armor. And larger Voinian ships are almost impossible to accidentally destroy if you're trying to only disable them.

    • One final thing to add:

Don't board any friendly ships which just happen to be disabled. For example, if the Voinians disable a UE Destroyer and then move off elsewhere to fight something else, it's very tempting to board it quickly and loot it for credits, cargo or even try to take the ship itself.

Note that there is always a risk that a ship you're robbing will blow up - you activate a self-destruct mechanism and only just have time to get back to your own ship. If you cause a friendly vessel to explode in this manner, it is considered YOUR kill. This means the UE may become hostile towards you, which is probably not cool when you're new to the game.
