And don't forget all those annoying-as-hell animated gifs. Those of us on analog modems REALLY didn't appreciate that.

    • Heh, I remember one in which I spelled "Soviet" with 50 of these while playing a midi of the Soviet National Anthem. My likedness on the board was hurt VERY much with that 😃

    • Good luck, Ebonnicito! If you succeed in making a multi-player EV/O than I will shower you and your friend with praise and admiration forever. Go make all those nay-sayers eat their words!!

    • I know you will probably ignore this because I have even fewer posts than Datax, but this is ludicrous.

Ares and EV:O are completely different games. There is no way you can copy code from Ares and patch it into a CODE resource and magically a multiplayer mode appears. It's entirely different code and the games are designed in entirely different ways, it is NOT going to happen. EV:O was never designed for multiplayer, it was designed for single player. No code from Ares is going to give you a multiplayer interface, or a server list, or turn those plugins into multiplayer data that's sent across the network.

From the way you're talking, you sound very inexperienced. Most people that hack games like Starcraft make small changes, like displaying the whole map. The code is already there, they just tweak it so it runs all of the time. They don't take parts from Diablo and change the map into the Diablo town.

While I don't want to discourage you from trying because you'll probably learn some interesting stuff, don't expect to accomplish anything or get these people's hopes up.

    • That's of course a valid statement, as is the overall. I asked this in your 'Progress Report' topic, but haven't you read the threads Paradigm reported?

    • roostersw: don't talk bull about a "posting base". I have less than 300 posts but I've been around here much longer than you, with a much more influencial reputation. Same as forge has been around way longer than me, and mikee way longer than him (probably).

If it is your first post and it is the best in the world, then don't ignore it. If it Datex guy had 12 karma and 3000 posts would you have agreed or something?

Don't be a hypocrite of posts.

    • I'm not sure. It just wouldnt load... I 'm still looking for the problem. I'll update you soon.

      ------------------

    • Maybe I'm just asking for trouble with my low amount of posts, but I believe in the spirit of adventure, and so must I boldly go on!

Ebonncito, I think you don't have a clue what you're doing. No offense, really. I would've loved to try to make EVO multiplayer myself, but there are a few problems. As many have stated, EVO was not intended for multiplayer. Ares and EVO have very different game engines. Pulling code out of a program isn't a piece of cake, and less like a chunck of dessert is deciphering the code you find. I have no evidence to support the following conclusion, but I don't think you know a thing about programming. Do you even know what language EVO was written in? Ares? And to make EVO multiplayer I'm afraid you'd probably have to make a patch to do so. The plug-in file architecture for EVO doesn't support game engine changes, just modifications to currently available features.

Don't let me stop you, I'm just a lowly peon with but a few posts. I am just voicing my opinion, and it is that I don't believe this will work.

If it does, however, sign me up as a betatester. 😉

    • Frankly, I think this guy is lying. You can't just pull source code out of your butt.

And even if you could, it wouldn't work as a plug-in.

      ------------------
      Giule out.

    • Why I think this guy is lying:

The first thing he mentions is "some program his friend made"

As Ambrosia has stated many times, creating a multiplayer universe would be the equivalent of writing the entire game from scratch.

He bids help from "fellow developers", as if he were just designing another plug-in.

He has provided very few details about this program or EVOMP.

A "plug" would not make EVO multiplayer; it would be a completely new game.

    • He is lying, the only reason I haven't locked this topic is because I find his avoiding saying anything specific amusing.

He hasn't said WHAT it is, a stand alone application recompiled or what...

    • Believe it or not this topic came up about a year ago, there was much discussion as to whether this was possible some said it wasn't possible and others disagreed... ...Imyself thought it was a fantastic idea and planned for a while to do this myself, however I lacked the time and to be perfectly honest the expertise to carry out such a difficult task (It really is hard if you consider all the difficulties). This didn't stop me planning one anyway! If you really believe you can do this then good luck to you, I leave you the ideas that I never used:

-Create a new game mode(or game even) and make it like a sort of arena (EVO arena - cool huh) create only one system and give it a station where you can buy any outfit or ship. When you start a new game you will be thrown into this system with say 1 million creds and then you will buy the best setup you feel is possible (but leave some cash spare for ammo etc). Then when you leave you will be in the 'arena' system, this is where all the action happens! Inside the system fleets of AI craft will patrol which you can attack for money. All of the other players will also be inside this system trying to steal your credits, but if you are skillful enough you will steal theirs! As you gain money and reputation you will start to be more dominant as you will be able to buy better ships and stuff. Another cool feature would be proper comm so that you could challenge a fellow arena player to a fight one on one or you could even cooperate and setup gangs and help each other.

Now go and make it work, and if you manage then contact me @ Patrickmail@another.com
