    • On plug-ins, EVO & EV3


      Joe Burnette and I started a plug about a year back called Empire's Fall (EF). We got about 1/3 of the way through, maybe less, and abandoned it, for reasons that I can no longer remember, probably time-related. We're currently discussing whether to re-open the files.

      Obviously there are problems with this. Neither of us have that much time. It certainly wouldn't be a rush project to beat EVN out. Which leaves us with a problem. After EVN comes out, EVO plug ins will have to be that bit better to get a following. They may not get a following at all. We don't want this to happen.

      Any release would be for EVO (because that's what we've done the work on), with a possibility of an EVN release to follow, depending on the difficulties that converting it would pose.

      So, what do you people think? Would you play an EVO plug (TC, BTW) after the EVN release? Or would you just consider it a no-starter, because EVN has already come along and made it much better?

    • I'd definately play it. After all, EV is better than EVO, and it hasn't faded
      or anything. People WOULD play it.

    • If it's a TC plugin, you should be able to convert it to Nova using R&R; Software's PortAuthority application. That way, rather than being one of the last great Override plugins, you could make it one of the first great Nova plugins, and take advantage of all the new features to boot.

    • This actually happened to me with my first plug-in. EVO came out and I was just about to release for EV.
      I concluded (wrongly) that nobody would be interested in playing an EV plugin, so I filled in all the gaps of bits of the standard EV universe I'd been using, and ported it to EVO.
      The beneficial side of it was that it became the first 'real' EVO plugin (in David Dunham's words - I think he meant excluding cheats and 'add one ship' plugins), and has remained reasonably popular ever since.

      I would keep developing if I were you, but be ready to do everything in 16 bit graphics - system colours look so awful these days, because we're all using 24 bit colour computers, whereas when EV was new, system colours were about all our machines could cope with.

    • Go for it. Not everyone will get Nova. As great as EVO was, not everyone registered it as many didn't like it.

      As "purdy" as Nova is, there will be those that stay with EVO.

      How many of us remember when EVO came out? I know I didn't throw it away immediatly. Hell, once in a while I still use EV plugins, especially if they are good.

      EVO does need more high quality plugs anyways.

    • Well, for example, I still download plugs that run under the EV engine, and play those. Go for it as EV:O by all means. Don't throw out work that you've already done.

      Try to aim for something that's complete, rather than something which is incredible but which you won't have time to finish. We've seen too many people show us a taster of a gorgeous, ambitious plug... and then go mysteriously silent.

      Indeed, it's incredibly easy to port with it too. Can anyone say drag and drop? You still have the same 8-bit graphics and sounds, of course.

      So it's drag, drop, and take a whiz around the sounds/grafix with a sound/grafix program. That's what you meant right? 😉 But it seems like you could finish the port in a matter of minutes-hours depending on amounts. Can't take more than a day though. An excercize in simplicity.
