Hrm, sounds a bit like parts of Portsmouth as well...

Shall I use this as an opportunity to drivel on? Yeah, why the heck not? 🙂
Ever since I arrived in this community over two years ago and familiarised myself with discboard, there have been 'changes' topics popping up every couple of months. They usually lament the passing of some well known and maybe well loved people, and then sit back and talk about the good old days -- hell, I should know, I've posted topics on these boards pondering where oldies like Mazca, Phoenix (as in Commonwealth Software and Nemesis), Kestrel (ie, Jeff Grinvalds), Ryan Ballantyne, Crow and many others have gone -- they're people I 'grew up with' on the boards, so to speak.
At the same time, topics have been springing up left, right and centre concerning the distressing amount of 'newbies' that are popping up here and there.
The truth is that this has happened throughout the time I have been here. No doubt, very old oldies such as forge, Captain Scurvy and Peregrine will give you examples out of the wazoo. It's because of this steady flow of people that this community has continued. - People get bored, they move on, they find other things to fill their time. Without newbies, we reach stagnation.. I think the (url="http://"http://stuartsda.his.com/evo")Alt. boards(/url) are a good example of this. I think we've had one true newbie there since the beginning of the year, and now it's just a place were oldies hang around and talk about nothing in particular. If these boards were the same, then they'd die pretty damn quickly.
I'm not saying that we should forget the oldies who are no longer here. Certainly, I'd like to see them back again, but we shouldn't complain that the community is falling apart because of the newbies - it's evolving.

Bleh, that was 5 minutes of complete drivel. Hopefully you'll get something out of it tho 🙂

    • If all oldies can be judged as being like forge, then they're probably all slightly insane anyway. I don't think that anyone could really say that there is a distressing amount of newbies on the boards, because when you get loads of us, the definitoin of newbie has to change, doesn't it?
I don't know what I'm talking about either. I really ought to go out and meet people...

1: Everybody is different. Do not judge a group by a single member of said group.
2: Yes, you really should get out more. I suggest taking a long walk through the countryside.
3: The definition of "newbie" changes depending on who you talk with anyways. The general definition of it being "Somebody who is 'new' in the eyes of others" doesn't change.

That may be a tad difficult for Jess right at the moment - large proportions of countryside are closed still. Still, treadmills and VR set-ups are quite effective as well 🙂

I know. I just didn't feel like typing "disease ridden countryside" at the time.

Still here Jon, and Nemesis Part 1 is almost ready to be relased as a beta, I just gotta find out where Kelaarin and Talos went (both supposed to be doing graphics) and finish a few missions. I'll give you a shout once it's ready (2 to 3 weeks) so you can take a look at if you find some spare time.

    • Newbies in my eyes are people who are new and those who just-don't-get-it. But thats my opinion. Anyway, the thing with the oldies, they are around, some have moved on forever, they won't be coming back probably about 75% of them, the rest have their little communities where they live, a web board, a hotline server, or an irc channel. They talk about whatever, theres no need to talk about ev anymore, they know it all, or all they care to know. Some are lurking, most of the ones still around will get EVN as soon as its released and will play it, and may not return to these boards to comment on it, but they will discuss it among the friends they gained from these boards a long time back.

Another interesting thought, as the webboard evolves, and new members come, and older ones leave, those old ones continue to evolve too, they grow up, they realize things they did in the past were pretty dumb, and they will never do them again, some learn these things quickly, some don't. But thats just them.

Yes times change, and so do the people, probably a good thing though. If there was no change, it would be pretty static, and you'd get shocked from static electricity. 🙂 But really, these boards don't change that much, the people do, but the boards don't, which is why people do move on. The communities that developed from EV change themselves, based on whats interesting people at the time, some new game (planetarion for me right now) or life stuff, or even the latest lamer on some webboard somewhere. One time it was popular to visit a girls teen chat and talk to all the girls there and basically control the flow of their conversations, and laugh at the lamers who go "LOL U R SO FUNI" "WILL U MARY ME?".

Enough Ramblings for tonight, I have homework. Good night to you all. But I promise when EVN is released we will see the return of some people who know quite a lot about EV and its engine, and will be looking for a new challenge, and we'll see plenty of new plugs announced that will never be completed. 🙂

    • The loss of the oldies is reflected in the lack of new Plug-ins. They were the guys who made so many of the EV and EVO plugs.
Nowadays we have more "gunnas" and "wanabees" than before.
You know the type "I am building a total replacement plug. Already have the name. All I want is people to do the graphics, missions, outfits, amd systems. It will be out in two days".

And I was just looking down the list of people who'd posted. I recognised two of the names, Bomb's and andrew's. This was out of maybe thirty posts, summat like that. It's almost like being a newbie again (but without asking questions like "How do I get the Voinininininian missions?" 🙂

It's wierd. I know most people here, if I mentioned HH or Jos would go 'Who?' In fact, if I mentioned Jim, Blazer, Beigejaguare33, Andy, myself, almost anyone active on the Alt. board--which is where a lot of the people from way back are--you'd go 'Who?' (Exception being Gildor and Bomb, maybe some others.)

It's odd. I was going to say that even though the community's changed a lot--anyone remember nash? No, wait, course ya don't--EVO's stayed the same, but that's not true either. I fired it up for the first time in ages t'other day, first time playing 1.0.2, and it was hard. I used to be a pretty nifty pilot, now I struggle to do, well, anything. Took me over half an hour to complete the Pariah mission in a UE Destroyer. I used to be able to clear that system out in seconds.

I guess the point of this post is that everything changes. Except that one thing does stay constant. We're always being promised the next upgrade to the game. Over a year ago, Joe Burnette and I were working on a plug in. News about EV3 kept on being leaked, and we had a long discussion about whether to wait or to go ahead and hope EV3 didn't steal our thunder. (It was gonna be a CR, Empire's Fall, I may still have it stuffed somewhere...but I don't think so.) We eventually decided to wait and then see if we could be first off the mark for EV3, get the first plug out. There's a whole load on paper. 😉

And now here we are a year later, Joe's disappeared, and EV3's still in the pipeline. (Sorry, bad pun). Bizarre.

Actually, I guess that's the real point of this post. Things change, and they'll always be bizarre. If that wasn't true, the world would be a much more boring place.

Anyway, that's all I have to say.

I'm not around much either, I've been following the conversation about the refusebit field that doesn't work but that's about it. I've just been working away at missions and fine tuning the ships and weapons and such, got about 30 some odd missions done and coded (out of about 40 for Part 1, 150ish in total).

I appreciate it, once I got about 5 more missions coded I want to get this thing released beta and then a final release of Part 1 (of 4) shortly thereafter.
