    • EV vs. EVO (no, not a battle of opinions)

My question is, what are the fundemental differences between the EV engine and the EVO engine? Before a thousand people explain to me in excruciating detail how much better EVO is, I think I'd better clarify what I mean by "engine." The galaxy is content; it's something that, given ResEdit, a 3D modeller, and enough spare time, you could create for either game. If EV:O allows ship scaling on-the-fly (which it does; that's one thing I know), that'd be the engine.

I've always been a diehard EV fan, ever since I found 1.0.2 (I think) on the the CD of the first issue of MacAddict. I tried EVO once, for about ten seconds, before the idea of re-registering combined with what I saw as ugly ship graphics to form a hulking monster of apathy which then strong-armed me into returning to my old flame, EV. Yup, I know everyone on the EVO board will tell me that EVO is better. I'm not looking for opinions, though. I just want to hear specifically what the differences in the engine are.

There. Hopefully this won't turn into a turbulent yet strangely repetitive sea of flames.

    • There is no fundamental difference between the two engines; the gameplay, which is what I judge the engine by, is pretty much identical. EV:O supports a few more bells and whistles, but by and large, there isn't that much difference between the two.

That said, a quick poll on #ev3 (in which Rick was very helpful) apprised me as to a few of the specific features. Many changes in the EVO engine were bug fixes – I don't think you want those. But these are the ones I could find that were actually improvements, although none of these couldn't have been included in a new version:

That's all I could find. Not a very impressive bunch I think I'll have to agree with the consensus: EVO is just a major, Ambrosia-sponsored plug to EV.

That's the EV Override progress log. It should provide you with most of the information you want.

Actually, the jump speed refers to the speed a ship waits before entering hyperspace - ships like the Arada don't wait after they stop, they just go. The UE Cruiser sits there for a bit before it starts moving. The length of jump depends on, like EV, the mass of the ship.

By the way, that's some cool UBB code there 🙂

You don't have to do this! Life is too precious! Good, good, slowly, everything will be OK. Now, put the trout down...

The main differences from the point of view of a plugin designer:

      Ability to include QuickTime movies
Ability to set the start date
More mission bit options, more slots for planets, systems and mission bits
      Sound can be 22k
Ability to assign government-based missile jamming
      Some more kinds of outfits

Thanks! Didn't know there was a progress log for EVO... this is exactly what I needed.
