    • Karma?

What is karma (under a member's name), and how do you get it?

      ------------------
"It's not that I'm afraid to die. I just don't want to be there when it happens."
"Dying is an incredibly dull and dreary affair. My advice to you is to have nothing to do with it whatsoever."

    • Karma is generally how someone is liked by the admin. on the boards. You can get it by making compliments and other things I believe.

      ------------------
"Never think you've seen the last of anything."

    • Karma is a rather ingenious little tool wielded by moderators to keep spam and flames of the boards. If you post either, a moderator might lower your karma. If it gets lower than -10, you are banned from the boards. If your posts are helpful and courteous, your karma might be raised. In either event, you will be notified by e-mail. In case you didn't notice, the names are taken from the legal statuses in EVO. Giving compliments will not improve your karma, as this is the equivalent of sucking up. It is best to post things that are useful and/or relevant to the topic. You should also not post with the specific intent of getting your karma raised.

The last time I was on this board, the price of dumb questions was really high.
      Ask me what I'm doing.

    • Hm, I'm helpful most of the time... (I think)
But they all just ignore me CRY
      hehe
I don't really care... As long as I can post on the webboard I'm fine πŸ™‚

      ------------------
      Arrrrrrr, matey!!!!

    • Yeah, I haven't figured out how to get good Karma either. Oh well...

    • Karma is taken away from violating the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/guidelines.html")web board guidelines(/url), while karma is awarded only for something very special. πŸ™‚ Compliments, or otherwise "sucking up" to the mods, is more likely to result in negative karma than positive. The best policy to deal with karma is to just ignore its presence and be good; it means nothing, and it has nothing to do with whether or not you'll have an afterlife. The only time you need to worry about it is if you're about to be karmabanned. πŸ˜‰

    • Just to clarify something, compliments won't get you negative either, but nor will they alone give you good karma except in certain extreme circumstances. But generally, compliments alone will not improve your karma. And as Shayborg said; just try to ignore it, complaining or talking about it a lot will give you bad karma.

I wonder if it's easier to get lower karma than it is to get higher karma. Hmmm....

      BTW, good show Shayborg.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! You've just pointed out the thing that makes the whole Karma system work. Good karma is difficult to get, but easy to lose, and bad Karma is easy to get: just break the webboard guidelines, and voila! And thus the threat of karmabanning keeps the spammers in check! πŸ˜‰

    • I don't really care I get a higher karma... I mean.. Why am I here? I'm here to post on the webboard, not to get higher karma... So as long as my karma won't go into the negative, I'll keep on πŸ™‚ ing

      Arrrrrrr, matey!!!!

    • I think you should be able to see if you're close to getting good karma or bad
      karma.

At least then you'd see what you were doing wrong.

For example, I could be Clean (-0.5) which would mean I haven't lost any karma
but I need to be nicer and stop swearing, or someone could be Clean (0.5) which means
that they're going the right way but still don't deserve a karma raise.

Plus, this topic comes up so many times. May I suggest someone makes a topic with
the full definition in, and then keeps bringing it to the top with new posts (with
unregistered names, of course, otherwise it would be post cheating :)).

After all, in about two weeks on this the question has come up about four times, and
      I asked it myself once...

Perhaps if the maker of this webboard would write it in large letters at the top?

    • That system of yours with the 0.5 and stuff is WAY too much work for the mods... I don't know how many members there are on these boards, but this would mean that everyone HAS TO BE MONITORED... I think the system now is way better...
You say something stupid (bad) you get minus.
You say something really good, you get plus
Just let it be. The Mods have enough to do. πŸ™‚

Don't treat the mods as if they're gods or lepors.

Be casual around the mods. They are just as much members as everyone else. The only one you must fear is moki, for he wields ultimate power! πŸ™‚

No but seriously, mods don't want special treatment. Most of them anyway. You know who you are πŸ˜‰

    • Um. Aside from the fact that once you reach -10 you get banned, does karma actually do anything? I mean, on /. you can set karma threshholds and stuff, but it doesn't seem like you can do that here.

Banning means nothing really. People have gotten -10 and then unbanned a few days later. Hell, I've been banned more times then I can remember. So one doesn't even need to worry about that.

Karma means nothing. All it does is manipulate the behavior of a few people. I've gotten like 5 postive and 3 negative and I still act the same, as I said I would...

However, mods certainly give special treatment to other members, "special" being picked on I should say... ahem

    • I suppose I agree with everyone now I think about it.

But mods have enough work controlling normal karma... If they want to organise
a proper system they need to be able to control it all, and quite frankly, they
      can't.

I've seen people who MUST deserve a karma change either way, but haven't got anything.

They don't control it, like moving each members up and down each day. All they do is reward a point every time they see something nice, which is getting rarer. They also lower karma when they see you say something offensive that really isn't.

Oh wait, that's only if you are someone that doesn't approve of homosexuality, nm πŸ˜ƒ

    • I just had an idea.

How about a topic where us common folk vote for who deserves karma changes? (yes,
yes, look out for my fake names πŸ™‚ - I'm Jade too, but she's a totally different
      personality)

And if they wanted to mods could look at it now and then, and if someone gets a really
high vote for good karma or bad karma then they could think about whether they should change the karma of that person.

It wouldn't give mods more work, it would be more like giving them less work.
