    • [ANN] The Mushroom Lady -- beta plug-in available

A beta version of The Mushroom Lady is now available on (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/pog/addons.html")the addons page(/url).

The Mushroom Lady adds an NPC who sells forest mushrooms, fresh apples, and two new mushrooms: the faerie mushroom and the enchanted faerie mushroom. The faerie mushroom restores 25 magic points; the enchanted faerie mushroom restores a whopping 100 magic points.

We didn't want this plug-in to feel like a cheat plug-in, so the mushrooms are not free, and you have to travel to find the Mushroom Lady. We used existing items to determine the prices for the mushrooms.

Since this is our very first plug-in ever, we're soliciting input....

I'm working on some text refinements.

    • Woo, another plug-in designer. 🙂

I'll post my comments in a few days after I've had the opportunity to look it over carefully.

A well done addition to the growing plug-in list! I am particularly glad that this is not another 'cheat' for the game. Its benefits are sure to be recognized by Rangers and Conjurors alike. Mmmm..... That mushroom pie looks good enough to eat. 🙂 ~RD

    • My bad... you can buy the faerie mushrooms (and the upcoming mushroom pie) even if you aren't a conjurer. I'm looking into how to fix that.

    • Here's how: Set a global to = &&gb;_pg_playerclass
Then, make the items only usable if the global you defined above = 2
I don't know if you can limit the actual purchase...

      Excellent.

How far along are you? Are you at the point where you are needing testers, or are you just inquiring whether there will be interest in testing when you get to that point?

    • The new version is up!

I added quite a bit to the original... different character sprite, more/better text, a bug fix, and mushroom pie....

Thanks to RD for the suggestions and feedback!

I think you've got a serious bug in it though. I'll mail you the details.

    • Could you send me the latest version? I'm up for something new (though I already have Damsels, RD's plugin, and Utian Village on my plate, but UV is kinda...stopped). My email is cha0s@evula.org (or just click the link!). Thanks!

I'm sure there will be. There is a fairly active group of testers who enjoy pounding on plug-ins. When you are ready to begin just post a message on the board and I'm sure several will respond.

    • Looks pretty good Axe(and husband :)). It'll be a great help for my Conjurors and my Rangers. The only suggestion I can make is to change the <how do you know my name> type dialog option after the first time the player sees her, and replace it with something more like "Can you remind me what your prodicts do?". Don't see anything wrong otherwise, nice job!

Conditional dialogs and item lists are something I'm working on figuring out....

I'm thinking of adding some simple recipes for the ranger character. One example: applesauce, which requires seven apples and heals ten points. Or the omelet sandwich: two rye bread, two quail eggs, and one cheese -- heals twenty points. Part of the reason behind these is that I get so tired of having all these very-low-point healing items in the inventory, and this would be a way to use them more efficiently.

For the conjurer, I'm toying with the idea of "cantrips": a few magic points plus a food item creates a new food item that heals more points. One possible example: two magic points plus three grapes makes fortified grape juice (or maybe raisins?), which heals ten points. Or does this sound like it's getting too far away from the base ideas behind the conjurer?

The swordsman is feeling a bit left out. Any suggestions?

Who said the swordsman can't use magic? He can if it's already ground up for him in a pre-packeged Betty Crocker Quik Mix. (Or is it Momma Marixa's Mighty Meals?) All he has to do is add in his apples or cheese, stir well, and enjoy the results. Not all of us are handy in the kitchen, so that's what prepared foods are for. They taste almost as good in the field anyway. 😄 ~RD

      Excellent idea!

I enjoy new skill addons that aren't cheats, and that make use of the otherwise unmanageable inventory. heh. I like that idea a lot. 🙂

Nope, sounds fine. Keep the magic points low and you'll be good to go. Heck, you might even make some higher rated ones as well. The nice thing about that is that you can spend a bit of magic now for some payoff down the road. It's kind of like insurance.

Well, I have a master plan for the plug-ins I'm writing(1 complete, 2 in progres, another couple are just ideas at the moment). By the time the next two get released there should be a common theme hidden within for the swordsman. If everything comes to fruition as I would like to see it, the swordsman will be a very happy camper by the end.

But this is also a long ways out too. No bones about it.

I like this -- the ranger uses "alchemical" knowledge to make stuff, the conjurer uses magic points to transform stuff -- the swordsman uses an extra item from Marixa? Is that what you had in mind, or were you talking about MREs for the swordsman? Or perhaps a "magic bowl" similar to the seashell grinder?

It's Momma Marixa's magic at work here, the swordsman doesn't know any magic tricks, but nothing keeps him from buying a product which someone else has prepared. That product can have magical properties beyond his understanding, but still be of value to him. He'd have to pay a slight premium for the preparation of the magical mix because of the skill and effort involved in production. But I'm sure that cost-effective production methods would still turn his grapes into fine wine, or whatever Marixa is capable of dreaming up.

You had best grab that ball and run with it before I write it into my own plug-in. 🙂 ~RD
