    • I imagien that the UE fighter is the most versatile of the eligible ships... but I'm VERY tempted to buy a Krait as soon as I scrape the money together, and keep it. For the cargo missions like building Paaren station, if you strip out the guns and put in a cargo bay extension and a fuel scoop... hmm... don't think there'd be room for an afterburner as well. Rats.

I'm going to join the fun. Gentlemen, start your engine(s)...

I got this .sig file at insanely_great.com - don't even think about taunting me!

    • Update: I'm in a UE Fighter, have done some of the early UE missions, and have about 3.5 million credits which I earned from trading in my Shuttlecraft. I'm not playing strict, that would be just too tough for me. Combat Rating: Dangerous.

    • Though it dosn't say so I think escorts should be banned too (though its not like you'll get many with one crew (incidentally who do you put on captured ships if you are flying a one crew ship?)) 'cause we are trying to show how one person can affect the universe. Comments?

    • Well, I'm very excited by the response so far to my Challenge. Currently the people who have accepted it are: JediBrass, Samurai (btw, love your sig), Allenthar, Opalius, VoinianAmbassador, and Great White Godfather, who is going to show us how hardcore he is by playing Strict.
I figure Ace Battlepilot, Stud Beefpile, and Captain Skyblade are also considering throwin' down.

Now for some clarifications... It fits the spirit of the challenge to not have any escorts. I will not specifically ban them, because if you manage to capture some escorts with your crew of one, maybe you've earned the right to use them. However, if you use escorts, you must admit it to the rest of us so we know you are not doing it totally alone. I leave the choice to you.
The central objectives consist of any string which concludes by telling you that you have completed a central objective. Specifically, they are the Nebula exploration string, Strand War strings, and the UE vs. Voinian string. The last one must be taken to conclusion with the freedom of the Hinwar. You are welcome to complete other objectives as well. I encourage you to do the Zacha string, and if you also want to do the Voinian objectives, that's cool, too. Yes, you can do the Voinian objectives with the same pilot as you do the UE objectives. Just build up a high enough CR (I think it has to be Competent, but I'm not positive), then accept the mission to rescue the Voinian defector, but before you take him back, keep checking in the bar on Pax Station until you get offered the first Voinian mission. Then you can complete both and continue to be a double agent. If you time things well, you can sometimes balance it so neither government hates you. Let us know what missions you do.
And the final restriction... doing this challenge is about learning to use the advantages of smaller craft, not just their speed but their maneuverability. If you want to stay true to the spirit of the challenge (and to the spirit of the game, IMO) then you will not use any piloting techniques named for British comedians. Learn to circle, dodge, weave, and lead the fire at your opponents rather than just "running away." You can Monty Python if you like, but again, you have to report it.

If anyone figures out how to make a Krait worthwhile, I'd be very interested to hear. So, VoinianAmbassador, if you do it please let us know how. The Krait is the only fighter I've had no luck at all with outfitting for any purpose other than quick detonation.

And thanks for keeping the PC vs. Mac discussion to a minimum. A few posts made me afraid that this would turn into a forum for that old argument and get shut down. So I appreciate your being respectful of each other's opinions.

So join the challenge and complete it as you like. Keep us informed; I like the idea of letting everyone know your progress. I will also take up my own challenge and let you all know how I'm doing. (I've done most of it before, but never all with one pilot). I may design a logo for people who complete the challenge to use in their sigs if they'd like to. Submissions are welcome.

      Gladiators, I salute you!

DOS was not copied from Apple, Windows was though, one needs only to look at the interfaces of both OSes, any similarity you see were copied from Apple, as the object-oriented Mac OS came before Windows.

    • ha ive done that in strict play before with only a shuttle
try to keep up and also mac is better then the ricie rich windows

    • This is my last response to this argument.

While both of the OS look somewhat the same, and the macs did come first in that field I admit, the source codes and display styles are completely different. I've already said I respect your opinions, I ask you do the same.

    • I don't get the three objectives, explain them in detail exactlly what i ahve to do plz

      I accept, no strict

      ------------------

    • One objective is to complete the UE-Voinian war.

One is to complete a strand's missions.

One is to finish the Miranu Nebula Penetration Device missions.

You will know when you complete one of these when a screen pops up and says you have completed such and such an objective.

    • I think thats acctuly totally improbable. LEz see, the azz ship is good, but can it kill 5 dreadnoughts? Lol, monthy i guess. But to get a combat rating in a shuttle that would merit a fighter is hard

      ------------------

    • Oh no! Fought my way up. Earned money. Went through six or so shuttles. Got a crescent fighter. Then it happened. I accidentally hit a Miranu fighter and before I could react 5 of them jumped me. There was no time to eject. Aaaaaaarggggggg...

      RIP GWG.

      Here we go again.

    • Is this challenge specifically for 1.0.2?

In 1.0.2, shields were reduced significantly for several fighters.

    • I'm going to do something I'll most likely regret and accept the challenge. I will not play strict but will avoid the Monty Python maneuver, which I think is less fair than non-strict play. FYI I'll be going for the UE objective, which I'm more familiar with, and the Zidagar, because their outfits benefit small ships the most, in addition to the Nebula exploration.

      ------------------

    • I, too, accept the challenge.

Although I normally fly Voinian and Azdgari, I will be flying for the UE and the Zidegar this time, because the Voinians have no one-man ships and using an Azdara seems quite dishonorable.

    • I'd like to remind you that there's no Central Objective for the Voins, only UE. However, you can still do the UE CO after doing the Voin missions, so...

    • Hey! That so called challenge is easy!
I only use fighters in the first place. The only challenge would be
having enough patience to a) spend ages earning money, and 🆒 spending
ages waiting for those pesky warships to blow up.

      Heres a clue:
UE missions done with the UE fighter
Crescent missions done with the Crescent Fighter
For both times use normal shield upgrades and run at opponent with align,
recharge shields and go back, or just outmanouevre if they don't have
      turrets.
For the evil Igazra mission, well, good luck! Cres. Fighter - as many long
range weapons as will fit in there, taking out everything but fuel scoop.

    • Man, this challenge is proving extremely difficult indeed!

I stooged around UE space in a shuttle doing the peaceful trader thing. As soon as I had 50K I went south to find myself a Krait. At Huron I got attacked by some Kraits, and had cause to regret selling off my blaze cannon (to afford a full load of cargo in the early days).

Managed to jump before I ran out of armour, and landed safely. Bought a Krait of my own and was delighted to discover that they have 20 tons of free space. What a bonus! I thought I was going to have to remove all the guns to make space for a cargo bay expansion.

My krait is called YBB2 (You'd be blue, too). My shuttle was called the Brown Streak.

On my way back to Sol I ran into some renegade Kraits, and toasted them. So nice to be in a warship instead of a shuttle! Got my combat rating all the way up to 'mostly harmless'. I had hoped to board a renegade Helian and take its credits, since there is NO SOURCE OF INCOME in a Krait without a cargo bay... got scared off by its needle missiles though.

Near Ariane I ran into a firefight between a UE destroyer and some more renegades. As I jumped, I flew through the firefight. They weren't even trying to kill be, but my shields were reduced to 2%. In a ship without armour, that's scary - and I can't exactly spare 20 tons for Dospect... but since it isn't available yet, I shouldn't worry.

I haven't been killed yet, but I have been in grave danger several times. Finding that you can't buy a cargo bay expansion near Sol was a bitter blow... I traded my lovely little krait in for another shuttle (did you know kraits only have fuel for 2 jumps?) and headed up to Mira. Maybe the diplomatic relations mission will boost my finances and allow me a chance to buy that cargo bay. How in hell I'm going to get a 2-jump ship up there remains to be seen...

      Krait-boy over and out.
