First, you need to hail your escorts. In order to select them, you have to do the following: If your targeting key is "tab," you need to first press the option key, then hit tab. Keep doing this until one of your escorts is selected by a green box. Then, you can hail escort, and release him from service. Hope that helps...I used to have the same exact problem.
