As early as possible. The journey to the Learning Tree isn't very dangerous(goblins, kobolds, and a couple ookwasps) and if you can get there you will probably earn a level or two on the journey.
Goblin forest is an excellent place to earn EXP as well.
Also, head down and talk to Septemris and get the knight's quest to become a page. Go rescue the kid in the forest and attain the rank of Page. The bonus will help considerably. Do this ASAP.

Quests:After you do the first Sempteris quest, he offers a second. Also, after you arrive at the learning tree, you are offered a quest which carries you back to Fantrima. You should be able to handle these now.
Karma: Karma is a determination of how helpful a member is on the boards. i.e. if you curse and flame a lot your karma goes down, while if you help others, your karma goes up. However, don't spend your life trying to raise your karma. It doesn't really DO anything unless you get -10 (you get banned). Karma is not very important, so don't worry about it.

Knight's quests are beneficial if you finish them early, as you get stat bonuses that will aid you when you are still low level.
And as far as level/weapons/etc, that depends on the player. Some people can complete quests at low levels whereas others need to be a higher level. It just depends on your familiarity with how the game works. Just save your game and then attempt a quest. If you repeatedly can't complete it then you need to be a higher level.

Hi KJK, Try to fight only one at a time. You can do this by retreating to safe (already cleared) area as soon as you spot one. This one will follow you but others will not be alerted to your presence yet. Carry lots of health potions with you.
Quest creatures such as these killer ookwasps do not regenerate if you leave the scene, so if you kill 7, there are 3 left when you return. In other squares, if there are 10 creatures and you kill 7, there are 10 when you return.
I hope that helps, ~RD

My Doctor said I was having too much wine, women, and song - so I gave up singing because 2 out of 3 is not so bad.
The (url="http://"http://mywebpage.netscape.com/rduckfwj/pog/mapnotes.html")Kingdom of Garendall(/url) sectional map is easily printed from gif format pages.
Find those areas you missed the first time around. You'll want to explore those hidden areas now made accessible with Spells Expander.
The killer ookwasps are also different than the normal ookwasps, as they are greyish in color. They are located 1W, 1N, 1W of the Gwyden Camp.
Just for reference, this is what the Killer Ookwasps look like:

Spend some time, wander around, build up strength, get a few levels higher. If you think the Manticores are tough, there are bigger creatures living on the other side of the lake. Strategy? When you run into an area that defeats you, go somewhere else until you are stronger. It really is that simple. Don't be in a rush. ~RD
Edit: BTW, sell some of that cheese in Gwyden Camp (you get a better price for it there) and buy some stronger healing potions in Fantrima or Berglum. When you get to those bigger creatures, you cannot eat cheese fast enough to keep up with the dammage. If your HP is about 90, you should have 10 - 15 healing concoctions (40 HP), same amount of healing infusions (20 HP), a few healing potions (80 HP), and an assortment of healing poultice (12 HP) and other food to fill in the damage when the battle is over. I never carry more than 5 or 10 of the smaller healers even in the early game. Economically this makes sense too. Three cheeses (3 HP, cost 7 gold each) = 9 HP, cost 21 gold. One healing poultice = 12 HP, cost 20 gold. Also, six healing poultice = 72 HP, cost 120 gold. One healing potion = 80 HP, cost 80 gold. See the point in having healers with larger values?

Get better equipment, if you've got the money - the holy cloak is really only any good if you're fighting undead things, which the manticores definitely are not. Since you're a conjurer, have you been to the Tower south of Fantrima yet? You should be high enough level to make it there now, as long as you don't actually try and fight monsters on the way. They've got nice equipment there...
Don't forget that doing the quests for Septemris will result in increasing your fighting skills - did you remember to go back to him after you sent the men from Gwyden Camp?

Oh no, here comes another learning experience.

Quite a ways north?
If you'er talking about the cave that I'm thinking of, in the southern part of that cave is a temple with a couple deathknights. If you can defeat them, there is some very nice treasure there.

Don't you like surprises? Go there and find out. Wear your Holy cloak, it's a cave of the undead.

It's a hard question to answer, so much depends on your skills, the equipment you are using, and how fast you can run if the situation gets out of hand. Let's just say, the better stocked you are, the better your chances of success. ~RD
