    • Shields vs. Armor

I've noticed that most people put shield capacitors on their ships. Getting the max (4) adds 200 shields and takes up 20 tons of space. But Dospect armor adds 500 armor but still takes up 20 tons of space! More isn't always better, but maybe in this case it is. Which is better? Any comments?

    • I'm not certain, but I'd guess it depends on what kind of weapons your enemies are using.

    • You have the space, get both. You don't, try to remove the armor.
(Say, sou are flying around in a Transporter.)

I just love Thunderstorms. I'm s+e+a+r+c+h+i+n+g for them, ok.?

    • Actually the dospect really adds 50 in armor. For instance dospect on a creasent warship will give you a total of 75 in armor not 525. I am not sure about the shields though.

    • I imagine that goomeister got those values from ResEdit, but they are not quite literal. If you want an upgrade to add 50 armor, (like Dospect) you type in 500 for the ModVal field. The same goes for other shield and armor upgrades. But anyway, I'd take Dospect. It adds more protection for the same amount of space, and weapons that hurt shields a lot are more common than weapons that hurt armor a lot. And Dospect costs less, too. If you've got the space, slap on Bronev plating, too, along with your other shield and armor upgrades. 😄

    • I pity you all. Has anyone here ever lost nearly all of your armor and waited to regain it? It takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Shields regenerate quickly and you never need to worry about a certain slow ship being the best you can buy for protection(can you say Azdara?)

    • Armor is advantageous in that almost no weapons are anti-armor. Problems being

      1. Low availability. Ever tried upgrading to a Crescent ship and then trapetzing across the galaxy for ONE FREAKIN' OUTFIT?! Argh.

      2. Low recovery time.

      3. Panic factor ("Down to armor oh #@$@# I'm gonna die I'm gonna die"), unless in a Voinian tank.

      4. Unsellable. In EV, you could sell the armor, but in EVO (last time I played) you can't. This is a HUGE annoyance if you're playing a plug, realize you need some extra firepower, and can't mount those rocket launchers because SOMETHING is taking up a bunch of space.

In case you don't know, shipyard scale is 1/10th the actual ratings. Bronev adds 1000 armor. If it were only 100, my CW would be killed quite easily once down to armor, even in the Crescent. It's 1000. Trust me.

Are you sure about that? 1000 armor is one $%#!ing hell of a lot!! (especially in EV:O) However, in the data, you do have to multiply your intended (shipyard) shields OR armor by ten. In EV Original, for the shield capacitors, it says that it adds 15 terrawatts, which means it adds 1.5 shipyard shields. Anyone who's ever looked at the EV resources knows this.

It's supposed to be a lot! Voinian ships are designed to have lots of armor, and their upgrades are designed to add lots of armor. 100 armor doesn't do much in the Crescent, not as much Bronev does. It has to be 1000.

    • There is no way that bronev adds 1000 armor. Look, ƒüŠk what ResEdit says, ok? If you look at ship info, the Voinian Cruiser starts with 500 armor. We'll go by shipyard units, because that's what the game has? Logical? (just nod, ok?). Good. The bronev then adds 100 armor.

    • Flatuence, please refrain from using the f word.
And it is 1000 real units in battle not the mere 100 shipyard units
So you think that a voinian dreadnought has 1500 shipyard units of armor which would just take a dozen or so rockets take out!!!!!!!Yeah right!!!!!!And that's what the ship info says

    • I didn't use any f-word. I used the ƒ-word. Lots of difference.

Anyway, I know that the dreadnaught has 1500 armor. What are you talking about?

    • The mod value as stated above for Bronev plating is 1000. However, when it is added to your actual armor it is added as 100 armor units. The reason why armor lasts so long in the creasent is that phase cannons attack shields at a tree times greater rate than they do armor. The values you see in the resedit for the attacking strength of a rocket on armor are 10 times higher than what they do in a game. I have spent a long time working this stuff out. So please trust me on this one. A rocket only does about 20 in damage to
armor. That is why when fighting a Vionian frigate you will most likely fire 5-8 rockets in the battle. If what was said above was correct then 2 rockets would almost kill a V. frigate. This is not true. Try it yourself. I will ue an example now. Bronev on a V. Frigate will give it 15 in shields and 350 in armor. Also think about this. If Bronev added 1000 ship units then it would be the most unbalenced outfit the gave has ever seen. If you have Bronev plating why can't you put it on say a UE destroyer and then beat 2 V.Crusiers back to back. When I mean fight I mean standing toe to toe and wailing. Not any of that monty python stuff. You will be toast pretty quickly. You are definately are not 2 times stronger. Use a UE destroyer, standard armorments and Bronev and fight an Igazra toe to toe and you will not win that battle either even though armor is 3 times more effective in the creasent than shields. (This is not even counting secondary weapons which are usually more horrible against armor than phase turrets.)

    • Jubee, thanks for the clarification. I was pretty damn sure that bronev didn't add 1000 real armor units. That'd be kinda cool tho.... "oh, look.... my voinian cruiser is now a dreadnaught for only 80 space!" 😄

    • If your with the Strands:Armor
      If your with the UE:Shields

      ------------------

    • It all depends on who you are attacking. If you are going up against a Igazra, you would probably want armor. If you were going up against Emalgha ships, then shields. I geuss overral it is best to have both an adequate amount of shields AND armor.

I also agree with Nova6, in strand space: armor.
